Chapter Seven: Be Who I Am
***
A few days had passed since the incident in the cafeteria happened. Gabriella and Troy had been very cozy with each other. It helped to ward off anyone’s suspicions about his sexuality. As much as it relieved Troy to be in the clear with Gabriella, he was still very upset.
“Troy,” Gabriella said from across the lunch table in the cafeteria. They were sitting alone.
“Yeah?” Troy looked up. He hadn’t said much during their lunch together.
“Are you okay?” Gabriella asked, “You haven’t said anything. You seem depressed.”
“I’m not,” Troy said. “I just have a lot on my mind that’s all.”
“You’re thinking about him,” she said. “Aren’t you?”
“Who?” Troy said.
“Ryan,” she said. “You miss him.”
“Yeah,” Troy said. “I guess so. I’m sorry. I know we are back together and all, but I just can’t help thinking about him.”
“Troy,” Gabriella grabbed his hand. “If you want to be with him then you should. Who cares what other people think? If you are happy then why does the opinion of the crowd matter?”
“I tried to be with him,” Troy said. “I told him I wanted to be with him. And he told me he couldn’t let me do that. Because he knew how much I cared what other people thought. And the whole public thinks we’re together.”
“Troy,” tears formed in Gabriella’s eyes. “Go get him. Tell him how much you love him. He is hurting too! You can’t let him get away.”
“Thank you,” Troy got up and kissed her hand. “I truly love you.”
Troy ran out of the cafeteria.

“Ryan,” Sharpay approached her brother at his locker.
Ryan ignored her as he exchanged books from his bag to his locker and back.
“Ryan,” Sharpay turned him towards her. “I’m talking to you.”
“What?” Ryan asked.
“I am sorry,” Sharpay said. “I didn’t realize—“
“Realize what Sharpay?” Ryan yelled, “You didn’t realize that something you said could ruin someone’s life? Huh? How could you realize that? You walk all over people like it’s a sport. All you care about is yourself and whomever you hurt in the process doesn’t matter. All you do is walk all over me. You order me around and emotionally abuse me so you can feel better about yourself. And as soon as I stop letting you, you begin to find ways to ruin my life. And not only mine. Troy’s as well. Sharpay. I can honestly say I’ve never hated anyone before, but I know for sure, that I hate you.”
Ryan slammed his locker shut and walked away. Sharpay felt tears forming in her eyes. She ran to the bathroom and looked in the mirror.
“I’ve honestly lost my brother,” she said. “Ever since he became a Wildcat over the summer. And now he wears different clothes. He’s so like them. How can he possibly be so brainwashed?”
“No,” Gabriella came out of a stall.
“Huh?” Sharpay turned to see her.
“He’s not brainwashed Sharpay,” Gabriella said. “I told you over the summer that you needed to look away from the mirror long enough to see the damage that will always be behind you. Well here is your chance. Take a look. Bet you don’t like what you see!”
Gabriella walked out of the bathroom. Sharpay looked back at the mirror.

“Hey man,” Chad said approaching Troy while in the locker room. “I know I messed up.”
“Save it,” Troy said. “You and Sharpay have a good life together. I guarantee that you two have no friends anymore.”
“Troy,” Chad said. “I made a mistake. I was just upset.”
“Where you Chad?” Troy asked. “Guess how much I care?”
“I’m guessing not a lot,” Chad sighed.
“Try not at all,” Troy said. “I’ve got to go to practice.”
Troy walked out of the locker room and into the gym. Chad followed closely.
“Alright team,” Coach Bolton yelled. “Let’s do some drills.”
“Actually dad,” Troy said. “There is something we need to do first.”
“What’s that son?” Coach Bolton asked.
“I’m kicking Chad off the team,” Troy said folding his arms.
“What?” Coach Bolton asked, “What for?”
“I don’t think he’s fit for our team anymore,” Troy said.
“Well,” Coach Bolton said. “According to our rules we need a unanimous vote to kick someone off the team.”
“Good luck,” Chad laughed.
“All in favor,” Troy said. “Raise your hands and say I.”
The entire team raised their hands.
“What?” Chad’s laugh quickly faded. “Guys? You can’t do this to me. This is not fair.”
“Sorry man,” Troy smiled. “If it ruins your life you can always go cry to Sharpay. Or maybe you can tell the school. That seemed to work out for you last time huh?”
The team laughed.
“Sorry Chad,” Coach Bolton said. “According to the rules, you are no longer apart of this team. You can turn in your jersey tomorrow.”
“Okay,” Chad yelled. “Fine. You guys suck without me anyways.”
“You wanna tell me what’s going on Troy?” Coach Bolton asked.
“I will tell you later,” Troy said. “I promise.”

Troy ran down the empty halls of East High searching. He ran into the auditorium where Ryan was going over lines for the Fall Musical.
“Ryan,” Troy yelled running towards him.
“Hi Troy,” Ryan sighed. “What’s up?”
“Come with me,” Troy said grabbing him by the hand and pulling him out of the theater.
Troy ran with Ryan until they were up to the roof of the school.
“What are we doing up here?” Ryan asked.
“Ryan Evans,” Troy said. “I don’t care what other people think. I am in love with you. And, I can’t be with anyone else. You are always on my mind and seeing you brightens up my day. To hell with what the school thinks of us, or me for that matter. All I know is I love you.”
Ryan kissed Troy. He kissed him and kissed him and kissed him.
“I love you more than anyone Troy,” Ryan said.
“I love you more than anyone Ry,” Troy smiled.
Troy kissed Ryan.
“Now we have proof,” Sharpay said popping up from behind the plants with Chad. “I knew we’d find you up here again. I recorded it!”
“You ruined our lives,” Chad said. “Now we can ruin yours!”
Chad and Sharpay hurried down the stairs to the cafeteria.

Troy and Ryan walked into the Cafeteria where everyone was.
“Everyone,” Sharpay yelled. “If you didn’t believe me last week about Troy and my brother, you will now. I have recorded pro—”
“Not necessary,” Troy said walking up to her. “Attention East High. The truth is that Ryan and I have been dating. Honestly, I could really care less what you guys think about it. I am in love with Ryan Evans and being with him makes me happy. If you don’t like me then fine, but at least I’ll be happy.”
“There you have it boys and girls,” Sharpay yelled. “From his own mouth. Troy and my brother Ryan are together.”
“Shut up Sharpay,” someone from the crowd yelled.
“No one likes you,” someone else yelled.
Sharpay stormed out of the cafeteria. Ryan smiled. Troy grabbed him and pulled him close. Troy kissed him.
“How’s that for your hot gossip?” Troy smiled, “Talk about us all you want.”
He kissed Ryan again. The crowd began cheering.
“I love you,” Ryan said.
“I love you too,” Troy smiled. “Ry.”
