Chapter 7
“You’re late,” said Caleb as Reid walked down the stairs.
“I got held up.”
“Where’s Tyler?”
“He wasn’t feeling well again, so I took him home.”
'That’s…convenient,' thought Caleb with a frown. “I see. So, tell us about this dream of yours.”
“Well, it’s kinda weird,” said Reid, sitting down. “Do you think there is a way for a ghost, say, Chase’s ghost, to bring itself back from the dead?”
Pogue looked startled. “I have no idea, but I doubt it. Is that what your dream is about?”
“Yeah, and I want to know if he could actually do it.”
“Lets have a look,” said Caleb. He summoned the Book of Damnation from the shelf and flicked through the pages. “Yes, there is a way. He can’t technically bring himself back, but he can take over somebody else’s life by inhabiting their body and forcing their soul out. But most souls are to strong to be forced out, so he’d need to find someone who’s given up on life completely and would put up very little or no fight.” Caleb looked up at the others, just in time to see a very Chase-like smirk cross Reid’s face.
“Thank you, you’ve been most helpful.” He sent out a blast of power at Caleb and Pogue, with sent both flying into the wall. Caleb recovered first and got up to see Chase running up the stair towards the exit. A wave of his hand had the door slamming shut and locking in front of the other boy’s face. Chase clicked his tongue and turned around.
“Now, really Caleb. The only thing that’s going to do is make it necessary to kill you and to undo the locking spell. And I’d like to point out we’re on a time limit here. My chosen host will be dead in about, oh, ten hours. And seeing as only Reid and I know where to find him, it’s not in your best interest to kill us.”
It suddenly dawned on Caleb who they were talking about. “If you’ve hurt him, I swear I’ll-.”
“You’ll what?” interrupted Chase, “Kill me? Tear me into tiny pieces? Rip my dick off and make me eat it? Yes, I’ve heard all that and more from Reid over the past three days.” He began to walk down the stairs. “So, Caleb. What are you going to do? Try to kill me and you kill Reid, and then Tyler dies. Not that that bothers me, it was what I came here to do in the first place.”
“Pogue,” Caleb whispered to the boy next to him, “Get the Book and find a way to get rid of him. I’ll distract him.” Pogue nodded.
“We’ll find Tyler, and I’m not going to let Reid die if I can help it,” he said loudly, a ball of energy forming in his palm. Chase laughed.
“You can’t stop me Caleb. Even if you do kill Reid, I’ll still be here. There is nothing you can do.”
“We’ll see.” He hurled the ball towards the other boy, who dodged and sent another flying back. Caleb dodged but was suddenly hit by a second one and flew back against the wall. Chase advanced on him.
Caleb struggled to get up but was held down by an unseen force. Chase laughed and levitated the nearby bookcases, flinging them at him. Caleb barely managed to repel them.
“So Caleb, how are you going to protect the other’s when you can’t even protect yourself?”
