Soaring

The flight from Tokyo had been long and depressing. I sat at the back of the plane by myself, weary and attempting to sleep. I sat there, that is, until Jeff came walking over, deciding it was in my best interest that he keep me company. I'd always liked Jeff, ever since the first day I'd gone into MTV studio's and was interviewed by him for my current position.

If there was one person I was always glad to see, it was him. Jeff had been a total and utter sweetheart to me since day one. I was treated with the utmost respect from the guys, and it was all because of Jeff.

“Hi Jeff.” I attempted a smile, lifting my head for a second before letting it fall back against the plate glass with a sickeningly loud thud. “Fuck!” I cried, letting my face fall into my lap, I held it with both hands and tried to get the horrible thumping to stop.

“Poor kid,” Jeff laughed earnestly, taking the seat next to me before holding out a small glass filled with a clear liquid; a tiny olive sitting at the bottom amongst a group of ice. “Here, run this across your forehead.” He instructed. “It'll help.”

“Thanks.” I took the drink from him, forcing a smile as I placed it against my temples. Cold beads of condensation dripped down the sides and onto my hand, soaking the tiny white napkin beneath and soothing my throbbing headache.

Within seconds the frigid glass began to numb my head. “Here,” I held it out in the direction of Jeff, waiting for him to take it away from me. “I don't need it anymore, thank you.”

“No, no,” Jeff waved a hand, reaching up and above his head and pressing a big white button with a picture of bald woman wearing a dress on it. “Keep it. You need it more than I do, trust me.”

A flight attendant came immediately from the back, bending over slightly and exposing a bit of cleavage to Jeff, she asked him what he needed.
“Scotch on the rocks.” He told her, turning back towards me and watching as I took a tiny sip of the drink and then placed it upon my head once more.

“What's wrong with you anyways?” Jeff asked, taking his glass of booze from the attendant, and downing it in one gulp.
“Everything!” I huffed loudly, finishing off the rest of the liquor that he had given me earlier.
“Don't be so dramatic!” He laughed, rolling his glistening blue eyes before patting me on the knee.

“My life is in ruins.” I replied, sounding brooding and dark although I wasn't as upset as I made myself out to be.
“What problems can a pretty girl such as yourself, possibly have?” I stared at him with squinted, angry eyes, letting him know that I was not amused at his assumptions that everything in my life was just fine and freaking dandy.

“It cant be work,” He continued. “You're getting good pay, and all of the boys and I love you.”
"Yeah, that's the problem," I grumbled, hoping that he wouldn't hear what I was saying but wishing he did. "They love me a bit too much."

"Don't worry about anyone else but yourself," Jeff turned to me, staring with big blue caring eyes. "You're the only person you should care about." He poked me on the chest, in the spot right over my heart. "You and your boss." He laughed, referring to himself, and I couldn't help but crack a smile.

"Listen, if you're so bummed - I've got an idea that might make you feel better."
"I highly doubt it," I slouched into my seat, placing my glass upon the top of my stomach and letting it sit there while staring at it diligently. "But you can give it your best shot."
"I'm going to have a masquerade, costume party type thing at my house for Halloween. I want you to come."

"I dunno," I stared at my glass still, biting down on my bottom lip and not wanting to give off the impression that I was the least bit excited. "I don't have a costume, or a date, or anything."
"It's only a few days from Halloween," Jeff persisted, obviously wanting me to come. "You can find a costume almost anywhere." I looked at him sideways and he stared back with pleading blue eyes. "And you can be my date." He smiled, sealing the deal.

I sat quiet for a second, not wanting to come off as too excited. Finally I sat upright and shrugged. "Sure, why not?"
