Chapter 7

Nightmares and Futures

Chapter 7

Mara was ready as she expertly landed her ship. She was surprised at the lack of defense they encountered when entering Lyson’s atmosphere. She could feel Luke’s presence through their bond, which gave her comfort.

*Be strong Mara. I’m with you,* Luke’s voice washed over her.

*I will Luke,* she replied.

“You ready for this Mara?” Corran asked.

“I’m fine CorSec. I feel Luke’s presence with me. I’m ready,” Mara nodded.

“Okay, while you sneak into the complex, we’ll create a diversion,” Talon said.

“That’s right. Once I finish my mission, I’ll reach you on the commlink and we can get the hell out of here,” Mara agreed.

She needed a diversion…well, she got one. Talon, Han and Corran pulled out the hardware. She laughed quietly as she began making her way into the complex.

*What’s so funny?” Luke asked.

*I think CorSec, Han, and Talon are trying to blow the south side of the complex to hell and back,* Mara answered.

*Sounds like them,* Luke laughed gently.

Her Force sense was heightened through the connection to Luke. She could sense Natrious just ahead of her, about 100 meter. Reinforcing her shields, she kept moving. Just outside the room, she stopped when she heard the unmistakable voice of Palpatine.

“They have guts. However guts will not help young Skywalker,” Palpatine laughed.

“What about Mara Jade, Master? She could still pose a threat to us,” Natrious questioned.

“Skywalker doesn’t know how to merge his essence with hers. There is no one alive who can tell him how. She will be dealt with once we finish off Skywalker,” Palpatine flouted.

*Show’s what he knows. You ready Farmboy?* Mara chuckled.

*Ready. Remember, don’t underestimate them,* Luke answered.

Drawing both her lightsaber and a calming breath, Mara entered the room. What she saw was almost surreal. The spirit of Palpatine was floating next to Natrious. She now saw why he wore a hood most of the time. His face was horribly disfigured.

“You should have killed me when you had the chance Palpatine,” Mara said.

“Yes, I should have,” Palpatine sneered as he and Natrious faced her.

“You were foolish to come here Jade,” Natrious stated as he engaged his lightsaber.

“Perhaps,” Mara shot back.

Corran and Han helped Talon pile up the remaining stromtroopers. That’s when Corran felt it. A strong tremor in the Force. He felt the Force signatures of Luke and Mara. The odd thing was, they were merged as one.
“Horn, you alright?” Han asked.

“Yeah. Let’s get this over with and get back to the ship. I think Mara and Luke have a surprise ending for this escapade,” Corran answered.

“Luke?” Talon questioned in confusion.

“I’ll explain later. Let’s get this finished,” Corran insisted.

************************************************************************

Mara flipped over Natrious with ease. Before he turned around, Mara slammed her lightsaber into his chest. She stepped away as the Master Jedi fell to the floor.

“It’s over Palpatine,” Mara said, facing her former Master.

“I think not,” Palpatine laughed.

Mara watched in dismay as Palpatine’s spirit merged into Natrious’ body. The body rose to it’s feet, but it wasn’t Natrious, it was Palpatine. She let out a silent curse as she held up her saber.

*Mara! Give me complete control. Can you do that?* Luke instructed.

*Take care of him Farmboy,* Mara answered.

Mara’s body went completely limp. A second later her body came back to life, the blue lightsaber ready for battle. Palpatine eyed her suspiciously. When he looked into her eyes, he snarled. Staring back at him were the cerulean eyes of Luke Skywalker.

“This is impossible,” Palpatine hissed.

“One final lesson from my father,” Luke said.

“You don’t have your father here to save you this time boy,” Palpatine shot back.

“I don’t need him this time. I have everything I need right here,” Luke replied.

They launched at one another. Their sabers clashed sending sparks flying. From inside her mind, Mara watched in awe. She watched as her body moved with a speed and skill she had never been able to do herself.

*Luke! Look out!* she warned.

Luke twisted to the left and dogged the vibroblade. *Thanks,* he replied.

“You can’t beat me!” Palpatine raged as he thrust his saber at Luke.

“You seemed to have forgotten one thing Palpatine,” Luke said as he thrust his saber into Palpatine’s chest. “You stopped your death once, but even I know you can’t stop it twice,” he added.

Palpatine let out a strangled gasp, his yellow and red eyes staring at Luke in absolute dismay. Luke turned off the lightsaber as Palpatine fell still.

*Is he gone?* Mara asked as she was once more in control of her body.

*Yes. I can’t sense him. Now, I have to go,* Luke answered.

*Go?* she questioned worriedly, thinking something had gone wrong.

*Back to my body. I can already feel myself trying to wake up from the coma. Now, set those detonators and get your beautiful ass back to the FIRE,* he instructed with a laugh.

*Alright. I’ll see you in a few days,* she laughed.

With one last caress from his presence, she felt Luke’s essence leave her body, but could still feel him through their bond. She wasted no time in fleeing the room. She had ten minutes to set the detonator, get to her ship, and get them all the hell of Lyson.

Mara set the detonators as she ran for her ship. She dashed up the ramp with five minutes to go, the ramp closing behind her. Loosing no momentum, she burst onto the bridge where Han, Corran, and Talon were already seated and strapped in. Mara jumped into her seat and began firing the engines.

“We’ve got to go now,” Mara ordered.

“What’s wrong?” Talon asked as he set the course for Coruscant.

“I have three dozen detonators that are set to explode in less than five minutes. That’s what’s wrong,” Mara answered.

“Is Palpatine…” Corran started to question.

“Yes. Luke finished him for good,” Mara nodded as the ship took off.

“Luke? But how?” Han inquired in confusion.

“Solo, shut up and let me get us out of here,” Mara hissed.
