What Happens In Gotham

Last Time:
With a venomous glare Katarina responded, “Where were you five minutes ago when he had my son in his arms?”
Katarina knew it was wrong to take out her anger on an innocent bystander, but something about the Batman just seemed to piss her off. So she unleashed a hell reserved for Bruce Wayne, The Harpy Reporter and The Joker on him.
“He could have killed him. Why didn’t you go after him, I would have been fine!”
“That’s a fine way to thanks some one ma’am”
“Mom!”
Jack cried as he ran into his mothers arms, he hugged her with as much strength as he could. His head was buried into the crook of her neck; no tears fell from his eyes despite his body shaking.
‘My brave boy’
The Batman stood and turned making his way to the window, with a single punch he broke it and prepared to jump. Not, how ever, before Katarina got the last word.
“I didn’t need your help you Superman-wanna-be!”
‘Hope the fall breaks his leg’
Katarina thought as she saw the Batman make a grand exit.

Chapter Seven: End to an Evening
Katarina held her son in her arms, he was safe, he was alive…he was…
In so much trouble.
“Jack Collins Napier II, what in the name of the Almighty were you thinking?”
Katarina looked her son straight in the eye, his teary hazel orbs where heart breaking but he had to know that it was not okay to give his mother away to a knife wielding psychopathic clown who held an eerie resemblance to his missing father.
It just wasn’t right, Damn it!
“But Mom! You said that the Joker wasn’t a bad person, you said he was mis…uter-stood, or something like that.”
J.C was not defeated by his mother’s skeptical look. He knew what he did was the right thing, so he continued to explain.
“He said he didn’t have a daddy or a mommy so I though you wouldn’t mind being shared. Didn’t you come here to talk to him anyway? May be now he‘ll be easier to talk to. See mom I helped!”
Katarina’s palm connected with her forehead in a resounding “smack”, she shook her head, dark curls flying in every direction. She could believe she was hearing this much logic, despite it being childish, from her eight year old. When had he gotten so logical?
“J.C sweetie, I know you think you were helping that man and may be you did. But promise me you never do that again. What if he had taken me away from you or you from me?”
“But he wouldn’t Mom; he said he wanted to share. He was only scary to other people not us!”
Nice…holding him hostage, threating every one
Strike that her son was not logical; he was living in a far way dreamland where he was probably having a tea party with the Joker.
‘The Joker…could he really be her Jack?’
Sighing in both exasperation and in hopes of shaking away those thoughts Katarina decide to call it a night, she’d have a serious talk with J.C tomorrow but today she was utterly exhausted, drained completely in every way. All she wanted was a nice hot bath. But first she needed to speak to Gordon.
“Hey Mom, where are Auntie Ray and Uncle Harvey or Mr. Wayne?”
J.C started to scan the remaining people in the large hall of the pent house. Many had already left, gone home to there nice warm beds, in hopes of forgetting their brief brush with the Agent of Chaos.
“The last time I saw Harvey he was taking Rachel somewhere private to talk…What was that?”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“That son of a bitch! I can’t believe he locked us in here!”
Rachel was mad, not furious, as soon as she got out of the closet she had been unceremoniously shoved into after an unconscious Harvey was stashed in there by her EX-best friend, she was gonna make said ex-friend wet his tight black spandex.
She had been sitting in this tiny closet, listening to that mad man threaten people and his thugs collecting jewelry and other things.
He heart almost stopped when she heard Katarina’s voice. Apparently the Joker was holding J.C hostage. After a couple of breathless moments, she had heard the sound of a fist connecting to a jaw. A solid hit by the sounds of it. She had mentally done a happy dance just as Harvey was starting to flutter his eyelashes, signaling his return to consciousness.
“Harvey, you with me?” Rachel knelt down to help the White Knight sit up, while out side the voices of people rose as one in the air, some hysteric others putting on fake bravados. That meant that the Joker had left the building.
Rubbing his eyes, trying to clear the fog and a just to the poor lighting of what appeared to be a janitorial closet Harvey voiced his question.
“Rachel what happened, one minute I’m proposing and the next I’m in a dark closet with you. Not that I mind, but what happened?”
“The Batman put us in here when the Joker showed up. You’re being targeted. The mob must want you out of the picture very badly to send him.”
“I’m flattered” was the blonde-haired man’s sarcastic reply.
“Harvey do you think you can kick out the door?”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lieutenant Gordon was at a loss.
How could a man who seemed to be completely out of his mind engineer such brilliant schemes? After months of research and planning, nothing was accomplished on the Joker case. Now both the Judge and the Commissioner where dead, Harvey Dent was MIA for the time being and they didn’t know who the next target was. The specialist from Metropolis had been of minimal help with the Joker, he could not blame her though, with the information they had given her. She had managed to crack Lou, he had sung like a canary after a half hour session with the tall woman.
Katarina Napier was a fine addition to his task force for this case, she was a steadfast cop and a generally agreeable person, her record was almost spotless. Graduated in the top five of her Police Academy, had a Masters degree in Criminal Psychology. The only thing that seemed to mare her career was one year with drawl form the task force nine years ago. She was still a relative novice of eighteen, before she had her degrees and barely after she had graduated from the Police Academy.
Commissioner Johnson had signed of on the temporary dismissal, for familial reasons and maternity leave. The familial reason was never specified further in the records, the next year she was back on the task force, a fresh new mother and determined to advance. She was promoted to Lieutenant the young age of twenty-six two, years ago.
This had been a long night, he couldn’t help but think as he turned left on the highway, what he wanted to do now was go home see his children and kiss his wife. But he knew his night wasn’t over not until they found Dent. He hoped to God the Batman could keep up with the Joker, Gotham depended on it.
His pocket vibrated, the ring of his phone pierced the silence of the car’s interior. He flipped the top and held the electronic to his ear, Hopefully it was some good news
“Gordon…”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Alright Rachel stand back”
Harvey grounded himself, preparing to kick open the door. He lifted his leg and swiftly brought it down in a side kick, twisting his hip for extra impact. He hit a spot centimeters from the door knob and with a loud crack the door swung open, smashing into the wall.
Several people jumped back, others hit the floor as if they had caught on fire. All were scared of what may have caused that noise, they prayed it wasn’t the Joker again. Their prayers where answered when Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes walked into the Party Hall. They were disheveled but not harmed in anyway.
“Rachel, Harvey, couldn’t you two find a better time to have a romp in the closet!” Katarina’s voice was a relief to the power couple as she and Jack made their way to them.
“Auntie Ray what where you doing in a closet…and what’s a romp?
The laughter of the adults did not please J.C. What he didn’t know was that people tend to become hysteric when faced with such a frightening situation.
“Harvey can I borrow you cell phone? I need to contact Gordon before he has a heart attack.” Katarina asked.
“Here, Gordon is in the Phone Book”
“Thanks”
Katarina distanced herself from the group, leaving J.C momentarily while she tended to business.
Gordon picked up on the first ring, “Gordon”
“Good evening Liutenant, this is Katarina Napier.”
“Good evening Katarina. I hope you have some good news.”
“Good and bad Jim”
“Give me the Bad first, hopefully the good will cheer me up.
“The bad news is that the Joker crashed the Wayne/Dent fundraiser and has targeted Harvey Dent.”
“Oh God, tell me he didn’t get him?”
“That’s the good news, he is fine and safe for now. I’ll be with him for the rest of the evening”
“Good, good. Katarina, the Judge and the Commisioner are dead. We don’t know who’s next.”
“Oh no. Jim what is gonna happen now?”
“Mass hysteria, pandemonium. Exactly what the Joker wants. Gotham is playing right into his hands.”
“I meet him tonight Jim. I cant be sure but there is something off about him, even for someone insane.”
“Are you alright Katarina, did he harm you?”
“No Jim I’m fine really, His-Spandex-Wonder clocked the crazy clown.”
Katarina heard him chuckle at the other end of the line, she could see him now shaking his head for her apperant hate for Batman.
“Katarina, I’ll need you tomorrow at the station early.”
“Don’t worry Jim, I’ll be there”
“Good night Katarina”
“Night Jim.”
Katarina snapped Harvey’s phone shut and rested her hand on her chin. How could gone man cause so much chaos, what’s his motive?
Taking a deep breath Katarina put a smile on her face, no need to worry her baby. He was going to have an earful as it was when they got back to Rachel’s as it was. She hoped Jim would be alright, that man had the weight of the world on his shoulders.
“Any news from Gordon?” Rachel asked as Katarina approached them.
“I’ll fill you in when we get home. Harvey I don’t mean to inconvenience you but you’ll have to stay under my watch for tonight. Gordon’s orders. Your still a target.”
“No problem, I have some spare clothes over at Rachel’s” was the blonds calm reply.
“Mom can we take some shrimp home?”
Laughter erupted from Katarina’s mouth at her son’s request. Rachel and Harvey joined her as they exited the pent house.
“What?!”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning wasn’t a fun one for our heroine. She had stayed up late retelling the nights events and filling in Rachel and Harvey on the deaths of the Judge and Commissioner despite the fact that she had to wake up early the next day. Sunday of all days.
“Rachel are you sure you don’t mind looking after J.C today?”
“Its not a problem Katarina, tomorrow wont be either. We all have to go to the Commisioner’s tribute but I can go home early and pick up J.C from school for you, he can stay at the office with me. You and Harvey have a busy couple of days ahead” Rachel answered Katarina with a gentle smile of comfort.
“Yes it will, thank you so much for everything you’ve done for us Rachel.”
“Don’t get mushy on me now Napier. Go to work.” Rachel replied laughing at the face Katarina pulled when being reffered to as mushy.
“When J.C wakes up tell him I had to go and that I love him will you Rache?”
“Of course”
“Bye Rachel”
“Bye Kat”
Walking out of the apartment and walking to her car Katarina decided she needed a cup of coffee. The chilly October wind was fierce today.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Katarina felt she was missing something, all morning since she had exited the apartment she had been getting weird stares and when ever she walked near people they would shift their gaze and stop talking until she was out of hearing range.
Same thing happened at the coffee shop. Katarina thought that the teenage boy who had taken her order was gapping at her open mouthed. The Café quieted down as soon as she had stepped foot in it. A tense silence which was broken only when the door closed and then all began to gossip again.
Walking in to the Gotham Police Department gave similar results. A dead tense silence filled the room upon her arrival. She was really starting to get annoyed now. Her strider became aggressive as she walked to Gordon’s office. She opened the door and all but slammed it shut.
“What is going on Gordon. Am I a leper now?”
Jim Gordon looked up from the morning paper on his desk, surprised to be interrupted like this by Katarina. This wasn’t going to be a fun conversation. He motioned for her to sit down.
“You haven’t seen today’s addition of the Daily Prophet have you?”
“No, I stopped when it started to print out garbage. Why?” Katarina shrugged of her coat. this part of the police station was always nice and toasty.
Gordon slid the paper across the desk to where she was sitting, leaned back and prepared himself for her reaction.
Katarina picked up the paper, her eyes wide with disbelieve at what she was seeing. She scanned the article to find the author. Just as she suspected there in bold letters at the bottom of the was the name Anita Seeker.
“That bitch!”
