Aftermath
It was a long time before either of them spoke. Will lay curled in on himself facing the door, alone with his thoughts, though he was shivering and didn't seem to be able to stop. For a while, Jack stared helplessly at the trembling form of the young blacksmith, wondering what demons he was facing, and aching for him at the knowledge that he was facing them alone. Another moment passed and Jack decided he could take it no longer. Hesitantly he reached out, gently placing a hand on a shaking shoulder, his fingers ghosting softly over the cruel imprint of Barbossa's teeth. "I'm sorry, lad," he whispered softly.
Quick as lightning, Will flipped his body and turned to face Jack with fury blazing in his eyes. "Don't, Jack," he hissed vehemently. "Don't you dare apologize for him."
The blatant anger in his lover's tone left him momentarily taken aback, but Jack was used to thinking on his feet and he recovered quickly. "Lad," he sighed, shaking his head as he tried to explain, "I--"
"No, Jack. It's not your fault."
And Will believed that, bless him. If only it were true. Jack would give have given anything for that to be true, but it wasn't. "It is my fault, Will," Jack insisted quietly. "If I'd not gone back..."
"If you hadn't gone back then he'd have found another way off the island. He'd still have come after us, years from now if he had to. He's evil, and evil doesn't die, Jack. There was no way you could have known. " Will grabbed Jack's shoulder and shook him gently. "It's not your fault." Slowly, his hand slid up to cup Jack's cheek and it was heaven: forgiveness offered unconditionally, a faith and trust he didn't deserve. "You have to believe that," Will pleaded, his voice somehow as soft as his touch, as if the quiet words held the whole of his heart, "as I believe it."
Jack covered Will's hand with his own, turning his face into Will's touch and pressing his eyes closed before they could betray the fierce emotion washing through him like a baptism.
"Jack, if you hold onto this... if you let him come between us... then he wins."
The lad was asking the impossible, Jack knew, but somehow that voice overwhelmed his logic and made the older man want desperately to give Will anything he asked for, even something that weighed so heavily on his heart as this. For Will, for his beloved boy, Jack took a deep breath, and did his best to let it go. For Will's sake, he exhaled slowly and tried to will the guilt away. But the blacksmith was right. Focusing his energy on his self-condemnation was getting them nowhere. It was time for a new focus. A new pledge.
"I'll kill him," Jack promised, then met Will's concerned gaze with his own. "Permanent this time, I swear it, Will." If it took the rest of his life, he would not break this oath.
"I know," Will whispered softly, complete confidence in his lover strengthening his resolve until he could give the pirate captain a brave smile. God in Heaven, Jack loved this boy. He squeezed Will's hand, and together they waited for Barbossa's return, and whatever new hell he would bring with him.
