Chapter 8: Reunion

Although the year was now 1987, London still had remained the dirty old lady I knew from my mortal days.

Johanna somehow had managed to persuade me into leaving my hideaway, deep in the forests of Transylvania. I still don’t know what magic she had worked on me. Maybe it was her d and and her positive attitude towards London and Valerious Manor that influenced me. It now cursed through my dry, old veins.

“You belong to a more clean and lively place. Gabriel”, she had said. ”Your place is next to Vladislaus.”

I stubbornly shook my hen hen her last sentence. Never…I wasn’t ready to approach Dracula…not yet. Johanna wanted me to grow stronger quickly. Every evening, shortly after I had risen from my deep sleep, she offered me her wrist. I eagerly accepted the dark, rich liquid. Her blood sang to me…from happy moments with Vlad. The pompous life they had lived. First in Transylvania, then in London.

I knew what she intended to do. She wanted to give me impressions of what a life with Dracula could mean. Intensity, extravagance...blood. He could give me all that I wished for. A high status among mortals, a luxurious lifestyle and above all…the richest blood that London could offer to a hungry vampire.
I tried to keep up my stubborn way, but I had to admit to myself that Johanna was right, when she said:
“You cannot avoid him forever.”

I had to face my maker. I had slept in my dark grave for the last 100 years like a coward, hiding from Dracula. Hiding from my own dark desire, always afraid that it could break free, uncontrollable and wild.
I had to train my control…and regain my honour.

Johanna and I rented an apartment outside from London. The city was not far away, but I guessed that my sister in blood chose the distance on purpose to make it easier for me. I hadn’t had any contact with people – mortals – in over a hundred years and had to re-learn how to deal with constant beating hearts surrounding my being.

This was no egamegame, I had to find out soon enough.
One Saturday evening we were invited to an important party of the Vampire Society in London and Johanna insisted that I’d come along. Warily, I accepted. I didn’t think of this as a good idea, since it always was difficult to meet other vampires as a stranger. Unknown new blood only caused trouble and rumours in old covens. But it looked as if I would have to stay in London for a while now, so this situation was unavoidable.

With Johanna on my left side, we entered the Underground.

“Don’t be scared, I will be there with you and so will Lucien, one vampire elder. He protects the young ones when situations start to escalate.”

The train that would take us into the city arrived. It was full of young people, on their ways to a party a club or friends. Their excited and fast beating hearts hit my hungry system like an impact. I knew that it was a test. A challenge of Johanna. But I wasn’t so sure if I would be able to pass it.
As soon as I took the first step into the train, my mind stopped to thinkionaionally.
Johanna took a seat next to a young punk and signalled me to do the same. I preferred to keep on my feet and pace the small space that was left now.

“Hungry…food…life…“ That was all my mind could come up with the next thirty minutes.

The ride was long and tormenting. With each station, there was less space for me to pace and soon the train was overcrowded. I was sure that my eyes had changed and that my hunger was clearly visible.
A Young Girl stood next to me, barely 15. When she caught a small glimpse of my unnatural blue eyes,
I shied away from her look. I was really dumbfounded when she asked me where to find this special
Eye-colour. She had searched everywhere for these kind of lenses and was obviously desperate.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Johanna grinning madly. Encouragingly, she waved a hand towards me, silently telling me to start a conversation with this girl. My mind couldn’t come up with a quick reply and I was thankful when we had to leave the train at the next station.

Camden was full of crazy young people. The fast heartbeats, full with life and energy, sang many songs to me. Songs of too many short lives, too much rushed time. It was paradise for a vampire. No wonder that the vampires had chosen this place for their headquarters.

Johanna took me by the arm protectively when we entered a narrow house in one of the darker alleys. The foyer’s air hung thick with the sweet smell of blood and excitement. It didn’t go by unnoticed; my nature reacted instantly and I had a hard time to keep it at bay. Johanna noticed this and lightly squeezed my arm. We then entered the rooms where the party took place.

All lights were dimmed when we entered. Obviously, a performance was being held. Strange, hypnotizing music played and faces were staring into one direction. I followed their gazes and focused my attention on a small stage, where two bodies were entwined with each other in an intimate dance. Both figures were completely covered in black silk, hidtheitheir faces and identities. Giving away the curves and moves of their bodies. Giving away too much, in my opinion. Watchingir eir erotic dance had a great influence on every person present in that room. Among all the immortals, there were human hearts beating, too. A lot of hearts. Some stopped to beat while the couple performed their hypnotizing dance. Many vampires took these moments to surrender to their hunger and just drain the next mortal that was standing beside them.

The black silk was fluttering around the female body of the dancing couple, when the male whirled her around almost violently. I realized that the woman was a mortal. Her heart pumped hot blood through her body. When she spun around on the stage, her blood echoed in my sensitive vampire ears.

Johanna must have been insane when she insisted on going to that party. My former hunger had turned into serious bloodlust now and I saw no reason in keeping my mortal façade any longer. Crystal-blue eyes shone with mad lust from every corner of the room and the air was filled with soft sighs of mortals, being bitten and drained.

The music came to its height now and so did the dancing couple on the stage. The man had cornered the female dancer and now slowly bent her body towards the ground. He kneeled in front of the woman and slowly shoved up the black silk that had hidden her body. White, naked flesh came into view. The man’s right hand moved up her thighs, then caressed her belly and finally exposed her heaving breasts.
The woman was obviously panting for his touch; her chest was heaving quickly with each breath and her soft moans did nothing to calm my awakened lust for her.

When the hand of the woman’s dancing partner removed the silk that hid her face, whispers went through the watching crowd. This mortal must have been a well-known person among London’s vampires.
People kept pushing me forward, until I found myself at the very front. I was almost touching the naked mortal in front of me. I asked a few of them; why they did that at all? No one seemed to really listen to my complaints. Everyone still stared at the couple that now started a quick-paced lovemaking, right in front of us.

The last remnants of my old moral told me to turn away and leave the building as fast as I could. But my eyes were glued to the scene in front of me. When the male dancer wrapped a hand around the slender body under him and took her wholly, my blinding lust took over. I bit into my lower lip in a weak attempt to sate my overwhelming thirst for blood, but to no avail. I was breathing heavily, without really needing the air. My eyes searched the still hidden face of the male dancer, wanting to see his face in ecstasy.

It was then when the man ripped the black silk from his head to reveal my greatest nightmare…
I was staring into the ice-cold eyes of my maker.

The crowd was shifting with excitement. On the stage, my master was staring down at me, wearing a more than satisfied look on his face. He then bent down to bring the naked woman’s flesh even closer to me. My humiliated feelings, anger at Johanna and myself, did nothing to stop the beast within from striking.
All I could feel and hear now was my deep swallows from the offered neck, the crowd clapping enthusiastically and Dracula, murmuring sweetly into my ear…

“Welcome back, Gabriel.”
