The Awakening
Chapter 8: The Awakening
Doc informs Riddick that once she comes back amongst the living shll nll no longer be the Jack that he knows. A more aggressive and malevolent creature should be expected. She will also have the need to feed and all those around her remain in danger. Her strength will be multiplied by ten as will all her other senses and abilities.
Riddick remains silent, unbelieving of all that he has heard in the past few minutes. He mentally prepares himself for the worst.
Saia stays in the room with the children, she tells them that momma had a bad dream and that she’s OK now.
Hours go by before Jack shows any signs of life. She begins to moan as if in pain, a layer of sweat covers her skin. Riddick hurries by her side and holds her hand in his. He whispers in her ear that everything is going to be alright. Deacon rubs her hands, trying to calm her, not knowing any other way to sooth her.
Jason stands at the head of the bed where Jack lays and he closes his eyes deep in concentration. Riddick knows what he is doing and lets him be. Jason glimpses inside Jack’s head and what he finds is disturbing. Riddick would have done the same thing, but he promised Jack that he would never get into her head again.
Doc readies himself for the confrontation, for when she awoke, she’d have little or no memory of those she loved. She will be hostile, disoriented and will try to defend herself at all costs.
Jack’s eyes roll to the back of her head. Riddick looks at Doc for some explanation in which Doc has none. Jason seems to be feeling everything Jack is; his fists and eyes are closed tight. Jack throws her head back and shrieks an inhuman sound that sends shivers down Deacon back its unlike anything his ever heard. She lies still and Jason also relaxes, his eyes opening slowly. Riddick looks at Jason waiting for some kind of gesture or comment as to what he just experienced.
“Jason?” Riddick asks, seconds before he’s attacked by Jack. She garbs him by the neck and they seem to fly about fifteen feet away from the bed before they hit a book shelf. Riddick calls out to her, but she’s in a rage that he never saw before. Jack’s fangs are protruding and her claws extended. She’s snarling and clawing at him furiously. Doc runs out of the room and grabs a machete; one of his antiques. He runs back inside ready to cut her head off.
“JACK, STOP IT”S ME, RIDDICK.” He says trying to grab a hold of her hands. Jack pushes back enough to gain momentum to strike; she catches a glimpse of herself in a broken mirror. Deacon stands in between Doc and Jack telling him to back off.
Riddick watches her look at herself in the mirror. She gets off of him and stands up, picking up the mirror in her hand. Her image is blurry but she can see her black glossy eyes, the long sharp fangs, she sighs and steps back dropping the mirror. Even with the transformation completed Riddick can see the pain in her eyes and is more determined than ever to get his wife, the mother of his children and the love of his life back.
Jack sits on the edge of the bed and sobs. This catches Doc by surprise for none of these creatures ever displayed emotion, they’re simply incapable of such feelings; surely.
“What have I done? I’m so sorry baby,” she tells Riddick, ashamed of her own actions. She recognizes him; Riddick thinks.
“It’s OK. You’re going to be fine, I promise” Riddick sits next to her and shoots Doc who’s still holding the machete a dirty look.
“What? It was just in case. I knew she’d be fine” he turns and leaves the room.
“I thought you were that monster in my dream and I attacked you, but look at me . . . I’m the monster. I don’t want my babies to me lme like this” she gives Riddick a worried look. He stares into her eyes that mirror his own. Wishing he could take her pain away, he’d give anything to take her place.
Both Jason and Jack look exhausted and confused. Besides being a little frightened Jack shows no signs of being hostile or malevolent and she definitely remembers her family; the people she loves. Deacon leaves the room, giving Jack and Riddick time to themselves. Deacon knows this is all part of someones twisted plan.
