Chapter 8
I couldn’t sleep with the anticipation. I tossed in my bed, waiting for midnight. The moon was still high in the skies, smiling at me…Moonbeams entered my room and roam about it until they found me lying on my bed…I smiled…My heart’s imagination flew me to distant places…
A servant entered my room at that very moment with some travel clothes. I was to wear a beautiful, long dress…It was a burgundy dress with a matching cloak that had a hood. The servant helped me dress and brushed my hair. I put my hair in a chignon.
I followed the servant through a different hallway. The castle was impossibly dark. Very few torches were lit…We crossed a long, stone corridor. It was colder and more humid than the rest of the castle. It seemed to me that were crossing from one tower to the next.
In effect.
Yet, I was not prepared for the sight. We had to go through the nursery to get to our destination. I nearly fainted. Huge cocoons hanging from the ceiling. A manheim of cables entwined…Some cocoons still carried offspring…Most were broken in half…The floor was stained with blood and mucus. I wished I had never seen that.
The servant, obviously used to such sight, continued her way through another hallway. She stopped when we got to a staircase that went down in spirals. She pointed down and disappeared.
The steps were slippery. I carefully went down the stairs. There were noises of water pipes coming through the walls. I continued my way down until I found myself outside the castle. If I glanced behind I could see the majestic towers of the fortress. Surrounding me was a thick forest of giant pine trees. Then, at a distance, I heard a noise. As the noise became clearer, I could tell it was a carriage.
In no time, the carriage stopped in font of me. It was a magnificent and highly luxurious carriage. There was space for four people. The top part was full of luggage. Was it mine? I didn’t know. Two…Four…Six incredibly beautiful horses pulled the carriage…They were black horses…darker than black…Their skin shining with sweat and moonlight. A servant opened the door for me. Inside, I met with my hosts…
The Count looked outrageously handsome with his black cape. His hair was carefully tied up in a pony tail, differently than the one I was used to. Yet, he still looked amazing. Aleera was dressed in a long dress with pastel tones and a lovely cape that only covered half of her body. The collar of the cape had mink around it.
-“The master and I have come to bid you a wonderful trip, Galilea…We shall meet you soon….”
Aleera smiled at me. She then, moved to seat by my side. She removed the hood from my face and kissed me gently on my lips before stepping down the carriage.
The Count spoke but didn’t look at me.
-“You shall arrive at dawn…Transylvanian horses are the fastest in the world…”
-“So, I’ve heard….”
He proceeded to leave the carriage when I got a hold of his hand. His hand burned through the thick leather of his glove.
-“Aren’t you going to bid me a good trip as well…huh?
He turned around slowly and I put my hand on his cheek. His bangs were soft at my touch. His eyes looked darker at night. Indigo eyes….He took my hand of his face and took it to his lips, where he kept them for a few seconds. I leaned my face closer to his and closed my eyes. I felt his breath on my lips. I framed his face in my hands and kissed him. He parted his lips and welcomed the subtle touch of my tongue. He pulled away softly and proceeded to leave the carriage.
Through my window I saw them both, Aleera and her master. An odd couple, I thought to myself. I waved back at them one last time. Aleera waved back. Soon both disappeared.
I could hear the rumbling of the horses, running faster than lightning. Through my window I saw nothing but a dark forest, a vast extension of trees and bridges and moss and broken branches…The sight repeated itself no matter how far or deep we rode…Soon, the swinging of the carriage helped my body surrender to sleep.
I remember nothing else.
When I opened my eyes, the sun was still low in the horizon. I looked around me and I found myself in paradise. I looked through both windows of the carriage and again, I noticed that the landscape where we stood had nothing to do with the dark jungles of Transylvania. The carriage had stopped amidst a lush, exotic garden.
The servant opened the door for me and I hesitated. He held his hand for me and I stepped down of the carriage and found Aleera dressed in a beautiful, richly embroidered golden robe.
-“Welcome to Turkey, my love….”
-“Turkey?
-“Istanbul…yes…”
Aleera laughed openly as she saw me completely disoriented, trying to make some sense of my surroundings. Everywhere I look there were acres and acres of green, with gorgeous marble statues…There were walls of stone, carved with ancient Arabic scriptures…Exotic flowers…There were two enormous fountains and there were a few young women bathing underneath, completely naked.
A symphony of nightingales could be heard at a distance. Aleera didn’t talk. She took my hand in hers and walked along with me. There were a few other women running about in beautiful robes similar to the one Aleera was wearing. An older woman approached me and took my cape off.
Then I saw the most gorgeous palace I have ever seen. It was not a big palace at all. It was rather small, actually…It was made out of marble. The main entrance had carvings made of pink quartz…It was elegant….The second level had a balcony which had garlands of flowers hanging to the side.
-“He shall be waiting there for you tonight…”
-“What is this palace…why are we here?”
Aleera put her arm around my shoulder.
-“Don’t be nervous…This is just one of the master’s summer palaces…I shall prepare you for what will happen…You are ready now, my love…It is an auspicious moment, Galilea….I shall prepare you…”
We followed the older woman to a different side of the garden, where we found ourselves in a Turkish bath…There were very many young maidens bathing naked, playing with each other. Many servants accompanied them. The older woman clapped her hands and immediately following, all the women left, leaving an empty pool fragrant with exotic perfumes.
Two servants helped me undress. Aleera watched me as she paced around…She was smiling…Soon it dawned to me that I was to be groomed to spend the night with the Count. My fleshed burned with anticipation and I looked forward to every single step along the way.
