Chapter 8

“So Caleb, how are you going to protect the other’s when you can’t even protect yourself?”

“He has help,” said Pogue from behind them. Chase jumped, seeming to have forgotten about him.

“Ah, of course. Pity, I thought I could avoid killing you until later.” He turned around, keeping Caleb pinned to the wall behind him. Pogue watched him advance, cold fury burning in his eyes. He held the Book open in his hands. Then he began to chant.

Chase frozen, and for a moment looked uncertain. Then he looked pissed. “What is that,” he snarled, before crying out in pain and dropping to his knees. Pogue continued to chant.

“Keep chanting, don’t stop,” said Caleb, standing up now that the power keeping pinned was gone. Chase seemed to be struggling with himself, and all of a sudden he drew up all the power he could and threw it at Pogue. The other boy’s chant was cut off as he flew into the opposite wall. Chase made an irritated growl.

“Time to go, I think. I’ll be seeing you later.” He ran up and out of the house towards the car.

Chase locked the door behind him and began to walk off, when suddenly he found it very difficult to move his legs.

“What the hell?”

'You’ve Used a lot over the past two days, Chase, and it’s sapping your soul, not mine. Your weaker now.'

“So?” he asked out loud, confused.

Suddenly, it felt as though somebody had run him down with Tyler’s hummer and his control over Reid wavered.

“What!”

'Get the fuck out!' yelled Reid and gave another push. Chase was flung out of him, just as the door to the basement burst open. Caleb glanced at the scene and said:

“Now, Pogue.”

Pogue threw something on the ground in front of the spirit, who eyed it warily.

“What’s this?”

“A spirit trap.” Chase’s eyes shot to the warlock standing above him, face contorted with fury. He gave a cry of rage as he was sucked into the trap. Caleb walked over and picked it up. It was an amulet.

“I take it he won’t be getting out in a while.”

“No, not for a very long time.” A groan from nearby drew their attention to the second youngest in the Covenant. Reid coughed and looked up at them, the exhaustion that Chase had kept at bay flooding over him. Suddenly his eyes widened.

“Tyler,” he whispered, the only warning the other two got before he jumped to his feet and bolted towards the car with surprising speed for someone in his condition. The other two hesitated for a second before following him, but by the time they got to their cars he had already driven off.

Reid raced down into the cellar turned prison as fast as he possibly could. Tyler lay motionless on the floor, chest barely moving.

“Fuck. Come on Baby Boy, wake up,” he said, kneeling down and undoing the rope around Tyler’s wrists, lifting the younger boy into his arms. “Please wake up.”

“Reid…” The name was whispered so quietly he barely heard it.

“Yeah, Ty, it’s me. Chase is gone, he can’t hurt you any more.” He sobbed loudly. “Oh God, please be okay…” Tyler slipped again into unconsciousness. “I’m going to get you to a hospital, just hold on.” He quickly summoned a blanket and wrapped him in it, lifting his and carrying him to the hummer. Reid could feel the blood and…other fluids coating Tyler’s skin. He quickly cleaned him up and lay him down in the back seat.

“Just hold on, Baby Boy. It’ll be alright, everything will be alright.”
