Among The Stars
Chapter 8
Mara sighed as she entered Luke’s apartment. She had just finished an intense run. She walked into the kitchen for a glass of water. As she entered the living room, she saw a message waiting at the comm station. She figured it was from Luke.
“Hello Mara. I know you’re probably on your run right now. I was just calling to let you know I’ll be coming home tonight. I should be back at around 1230 to 1245. Don’t wait up. I’ll see you soon,” Luke’s voice said.
Mara couldn’t help but smile as she headed for the refresher. It had been four months since Luke came to that session with Layana. She had practically moved in with him since then.
After that session, her nightmares became fewer and fewer until they finally stopped. Though she mainly slept in the guest room, occasionally she would sneak into his room. He never said anything, just pulled her into his arms and went back to sleep.
‘Jade, you know there’s something between you and Skywalker. When are you going to talk to him about it?’ her mind asked.
“When he gets home. I’ll talk to him after breakfast tomorrow,” she stated.

Luke smiled as he exited the turbolift on his floor. He had been called to the academy to help settle a dispute between his staff and a few of the native tribe on Yavin IV. For two weeks he, Corran, and Kyp had negotiated before both sides came to an agreement. He recalled the day he left and smiled.
*Luke’s Apartment 2 weeks ago*
“Mara, are you sure you’ll be alright here alone?” Luke asked.
“Yes. Damn Skywalker, I’m not five,” Mara answered.
“I know, I just worry about you,” he sighed as he faced her.
“I appreciate that Farmboy, but I’ll be fine,” she smiled as she placed her hand on his arm.
“It shouldn’t take too long,” he said.
“Look, if I didn’t feel one hundred percent, both mentally and physically, I’d either go with you or stay with Leia and Solo. Even Layana said I was fine,” she replied.
“Alright. Just remember, if you need anything, call either me or Leia,” he stated.
“I will. Now finish packing and stop worrying about me,” she grumbled.
*Present Day*
He had checked in with her everyday. Even though she acted annoyed, he could tell she was happy to hear from him. As he rounded the corner, his smile faded. Outside his apartment were NRI agents. A medical team was moving a body bag from the apartment. Luke’s heart froze as he started running for his apartment.
“MARA!” Luke called out as he burst into the living room.
“Luke, she’s fine. She’s over there talking to General Madine,” Leia said as she stopped her brother.
“What happened?” he demanded.
“We don’t know kid. Leia and I just arrived after Madine and the NRI,” Han answered.
Luke looked over at Mara. He felt his blood start to boil when he saw her face. Her lower lip was split and a black eyes was already forming over her right eye.
After waiting patiently for half an hour, it was only Luke, Mara, Leia, and Han. Han fixed the, a drink while Mara began explaining what exactly happened. “I was just getting ready for bed when I heard a noise in the living room. I knew it was too early for it to be Luke. When I reached out with the Force, I couldn’t read them. I grabbed my blaster and snuck out of my room. I didn’t see him at first. As I turned to check out Luke’s bedroom, he punched me. I was knocked to the floor and my blaster slid away from me. That’s when I saw who it was,” Mara sighed.
“Who was it?” Han asked.
“Gareth Tre’Son,” Mara answered.
“But I thought he died at his compound?” Luke gasped.
“Oh he told me how he survived. He said just before the explosion, he stepped outside. The blast knocked him out and threw him about five feet away. He spent the next six months fixing a ship and plotting his revenge. We started fighting. I finally knocked that damned ysalamiri frame off his back. I called for my blaster. One shot and it was over. I called NRI, then Leia and Han,” she explained.
“I knew I shouldn’t have left you alone,” Luke grumbled.
Mara, Leia, and Han watched as Luke got to his feet and stormed onto his balcony. Mara sent Leia and Han home then joined Luke outside. She could sense how mad he was about everything.
“I’m sorry Mara,” he whispered.
“Luke, this isn’t your fault. How were you suppose to know the bastard survived? Besides, some good came out of this,” she said.
“What good? He could have killed you,” Luke stated as he faced her.
“The good thing is, I’m free. By facing him one last time I faced what happened. I no longer fear anything. What he did to me is now only a distant memory. A memory that has made me stronger,” she smiled as she put her hands on his arms.
Mara gasped as Luke pulled her into his arms and kissed her. After only a few seconds of shock, her arms slid around his neck and she gladly returned the kiss.
