Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Riddick slept on and off for the next week and Nadia stayed by his side. The
short time he was awake, they talked and formed quite a bond in that short time.
Nadia was thankful that Johns had hit a dry spell and didn’t have her chasing
people here and there. Riddick was healing well and moved from the safe room to
the house. They spent time together watching TV and listening to music.
One night, Riddick even felt well enough to help her with dinner. It was a major mess because working with him only took Nadia’s mind off of what she should have been doing. She was amazed at how well he handled a knife. That night was different; they
were connecting in a way Nadia never thought they would. He seemed to be as
happy with her as she was with him. He set the table while she watched him over
the counter. Their eyes met several times and every time her heart skipped a beat.
Riddick’s eyes sparkled with delight when she played her song for him. She explained
to him that she didn't know why she named it, “Steele In The Past,” nor how she
learned to play the piano. Riddick knew, he'd known Nadia since they were
children. He was proud because she had come so far from where they’ve been. All
Riddick wanted was for her to be able to sleep peacefully at night. Riddick
started to have a change of heart. The sweet little girl he had protected for half
her life had become a woman, regardless of the people who tried to break her.
As she played, Nadia looked over and Riddick had fallen into a deep sleep. She
smiled because he looked so peaceful. In the back of her mind, she entertained the
thought that they may have something in common. Getting up from the piano, she
plopped down onto the love seat and watched him sleep.
An hour later, Riddick jumped up. First, he didn't realize where he was but when he saw her sleeping on the sofa, it came back to him quickly. Riddick stirred with amazement. He had seen women sleep before but never one this serene. They never looked so angelic. He indulged in her essence.
The next morning, Nadia woke up and went about her daily routine. Now a little
more comfortable, she started taking long luxurious baths. Everyday, she would
have to wake him to eat and he wouldn't wake again until dinner. Today, after
breakfast, he seemed uneasy and she wondered if he'd had another nightmare as he did
that morning in the safe room. He talked until his words slurred and he couldn't
keep his eyes open any longer. Nadia wondered what was causing him to be so
afraid to sleep. She flipped on the TV and rocked back in the recliner. She
thought it best to stay with him this time. Nadia didn't know what he would do.
She was watching a rerun of Sanford and Son, when Riddick started to whisper.
Pity she couldn't understand what he was saying.
“Mr. Smith, are you okay?” She asked, intentionally prying for information. He didn't
answer.
“What’s happening to you?” She asked.
He didn't answer.
“Is someone hurting you?” She asked again.
He didn't answer.
“NADI!!.. NADI!!” He screamed.
Nadia jumped back. A slew of memories washed over her. Shaking, she seemed to
be looking at a ghost. She saw them dragging him away as he begged and pleaded for
his freedom. She saw Scott and felt the pain of the bullet piercing her back. She
felt the bullet travel through her body and rip her skin as it exited her chest.
“RIDDIE!!!” She screamed with recollection.
