CHAPTER VIII
Carl drummed his fingers on the lab table. How long was Jinnette going to keep Van Helsing? The man had kept as far away from the order as possible LONGER than he had been bidden. Finally showing up, he had not come straight to the lab as usual, he had sought confession. Carl was more than a little irritated. He had received no word, nothing. He had spent the last few months designing the weapons they would need on their new mission. Reports on the Scarab had been filtering back from the agent they had in the field there. He was not as good as Van Helsing, but he was effective at gathering information and that is what they needed now.
The friar had also been reading up on Egypt. He’d never been there. The first thing he -did- know was that he was going to have to give up his monk’s robes. They would not take to kindly to a man who worshipped the Christian God there openly. He wasn’t sure what he thought of that, it had been so long since he had worn simple clothing. He had even had to go out and purchase some with church funds.
He was fascinated by hieroglyphs, studying them way into the night as he prepared for their journey. He had created several useful weapons. A few drops of Gliscerin would come in handy with the creature they were dealing with. He was apparently very tough to damage. Carl had figured out a way to mix a couple of chemicals that would cause an acid like reaction to the creature’s hard skin. He was quite pleased with the results.
What he was not pleased with was that Van Helsing had been in the Vatican for the better part of a day and he had NOT seen him yet.
“Carl watch out!” Brother Andrew warned as the friar nearly dropped a tube of acid. “I think we’d all be a lot safer if you took a break.”
That certainly was no ‘request’ from the elder monk, and so Carl was forced to exit the lab. Sighing, he made his way upstairs and to his chambers. His bag was already packed with the clothing and books he would need. They would be leaving on a ship the next day.
He sat down at his desk and buried his fingers in his hair. What would he even -say- to Gabriel? Would the elder man acknowledge the kiss? Would he… Carl rubbed his eyes, god, he did not realize he was so tired. For a moment he simply stared into space, leaning back in his chair.
***
He almost jumped out of his skin when there was a soft knock at his door. Far too eagerly he wrenched it open and barely held back the urge to spring forward. Gabriel stood there, calm in his leather coat and hat, leaning one hand on the edge of the window sill. He couldn’t help smiling broadly, this was a sight that he had wished for far too long. “Hello Carl,” Van Helsing said mildly, betraying nothing. “You weren’t in the lab so I thought I’d come check and see if you were okay.”
Carl’s expression changed from joy to confusion. Hello Carl? As though nothing had happened? But… he was between frowning and smiling, unable to decide just exactly what Gabriel meant. He stepped away from the door, giving Van Helsing the option of entering. “Its nice to see you haven’t come home with any injuries.”
“I was on a sabbatical from hunting, you can’t get injuries when you don’t fight anything.” Gabriel entered the room and closed the door behind them. “Are you really coming with me tomorrow?”
“Yes,” Carl nodded. “I speak Egyptian, you don’t.” The younger man put a bit of distance between himself and Gabriel, not entirely sure why, but he was unnerved by how calm the other man was.
Gabriel gave a sigh, “Well, I’m not used to having a partner. You’ll have to keep out of the way.” his eyes tracked Carl on the way across the room, betraying nothing.
“Naturally.” the friar’s hopes plummeted with each passing moment. Gabriel was obviously not going to mention the kiss, or anything that had happened between them first. He longed to simply throw himself in the hunter’s arms and attack him with kisses, but…something held him back. He shivered slightly, not from cold but because he had to suppress everything he felt in order to not break down.
“Carl…” Gabriel said carefully. “What‘s wrong? You‘re trembling? Do you fear me?” The man’s tone surprised Carl so much his mouth fell open. He hadn’t expected it at all. Usually Van Helsing was the confidant one.
“N-no.” Carl shook his head. “Van Helsing…”
“Call me Gabriel, you have no idea how much I hate it when you call me anything else.” The hunter caught Carl’s arm and suddenly pulled him close.
The surprised friar yelped, but did not resist. “Gabriel, then. Um, What are you doing?”
“What I’ve dreamt of doing for more than a hundred days straight.”
To the friar’s utter amazement his lips were captured in a thorough, ravaging kiss. Van Helsing pushed him back against the wall, his tongue plundering savagely. Carl could barely breathe from the effort of keeping up with the elder man. Suddenly his hands were everywhere, in Carl’s hair, down his back, tugging at the robe. “How do you get this bloody thing off?” Gabriel muttered darkly when they finally broke free.
“Don’t pull, you’ll rip it.” Carl slapped at one of the elder man’s hands as he simply pulled it up over his head and tossed it aside. “There, easy…”
And then he was standing there, half naked in only his thin shorts. Van Helsing kissed him again, his lips devouring, tugging at flesh as he trailed fire down Carl’s neck.
***
The banging on his door woke him from the daydream.
“Carl! Open up. We’re going to be late. Are you ready?”
What did he mean late? Carl growled under his breath. The boat was not leaving until tomorrow. He picked up his bag and opened the door. “Hello to you too, Van Helsing.”
“Don’t be flippant, we haven’t got much time. Have you got everything from the lab?” Gabriel barely looked at him, staring at his extra large bag.
“Yeah,” Carl mumbled, his hopes plummeted to the ground. Naturally, Van Helsing was going to be determined to ignore what had happened.
The two men walked out of Carl’s room, Gabriel moving so quickly that Carl had to run to keep up with him. On the way they encountered Jinnette who gave them their blessing. The unhappy friar continued towards the stables where they would begin their journey.
