Chapter 9

Matt turned and ran down the hall and looked in to see Alexis on the floor with blood around her. He walked up to her took a deep breath while staring at her. He picked her up and put her on a clean table and pulled out a blanket from the cabinet in the corner. Covering her from the neck down he lowered the lights and stepped out of the med bay and walked hesitantly back to the kitchen.

Riddick was sitting at the counter still looking at nothing. Matt walked over to the cupboard, pulled out a glass and filled it with cold water. He slowly walked over to Riddick and set the glass by the sandwich, he then sat in the chair next to him.

“She’s not dead Riddick.”

Riddick looked at him blankly. “I have seen more death than you will ever know kid. I’ve caused a lot of it myself. I know death when I see it and she’s dead.”

Matt could see how much he was trying to hold his no emotion barrier but it was showing through the cracks. “Ok, your right, she’s dead, but she won’t stay that way.” Riddick’s face turned angry and Matt decided he should explain as quickly as possible.

“Riddick, Alexis is special. She has this ability that lets her body regenerate, even when she has received fatal injuries.” Riddick continued to keep his eyes on Matt, letting his angered expression fade a bit. Matt noticed that and kept going. “I came to visit Alexis at Slam shortly after you were attacked…and died.” Riddick’s gaze hardened at that information. “Alexis told me you were being shot into space, I was supposed to pick you up and when she escaped slam she was going to bring you back. You were dead about 4 hours, longer than anyone or anything she has brought back. I think that is why her recovery is taking so long this time. She said she could be out as long as 24 hours.”

Riddick’s stare left Matt. “I died. I don’t remember anything but seeing Alexis in a dark tunnel. She attacked me, bit me. I couldn’t push her off though, I don’t know why.

Matt shook his head understanding Riddick’s confusion. “She bit you because she knew you were dying Riddick. She has to take some of your blood into her system so she can use it to bring you back. She also allowed some of her blood into your wound. You were pretty mutilated in the stomach. A knife fight or something Alexis said, with another inmate.”

Riddick closed his eyes and tried hard to remember but he just couldn’t. He breathed out heavily with frustration.

Matt slowly stood up. Riddick didn’t budge. “Try to eat Riddick. Then you can go to your quarters. The third entry door on the left just down the hall. I bet after some sleep you will feel better and things may come back to you. If you need anything just let me know. My quarters are the first entry door on the left just down there.” Matt pointed to the doorway that could be seen from the kitchen. “Lights are low all over the ship to make it more comfortable for you.” Matt turned to walk out of the kitchen when he heard Riddick mutter, “Thank you”. He stopped and looked at Riddick who was looking at him dumbfounded at what he said. Matt just smiled and nodded, turned again and walked to his quarters disappearing inside.
