Still Waters

Book 3

Chapter 9

“Lady, you are so clueless, the game is smarter than you!”

Mrs. Reynolds turned on the biker with hatred and fire in her eyes. “At least I’m not going to teach my grandson about guns and drugs and how to rob banks!”

“Is that what you think!? I can have you up on slander charges!”

“For speaking the truth!?” Mr. Reynolds bellowed. “No judge will even listen to you!!!”

“You wouldn’t know truth if it came up and bit your face off!!’

“And I will not permit my grandson to be in the same house as a whore!!” Eagle Feathers shouted.

Tom seemed to out shout Walker on Aubrey’s defense. “There is no proof, nor evidence, of Mrs. Feathers’ involvement in any criminal activity!”

“Not yet!” the Reynolds’ lawyer stated. “But we’ll find it!”

“Anything you discover must be disclosed to me, and believe me, you will not have it before the judge!”

“QUIET!!!” Walker shouted, as Trivett whistled long and loud to get everyone’s attention. Finally with silence around him, he continued. “With what I’ve just uncovered, there’s no way, Eagle Feathers, that you will get custody. The same goes for the two of you,” he snapped to the smug looking expressions on the Reynolds’ faces, “no matter how many judges you put in your pocket. Now, Sam has taken off somewhere. We need to think of him, and figure you where he’s gone off to. Aubrey?” But when he turned to where Trivett had left her, she was gone.

“Oh crap,” Trivett cursed, then noticed the paper on the ground and quickly snatched it up, before it could be carried away by someone’s sticky shoe. “Walker?” the two looked it over, and Walker turned to Eagle Feathers.

“Where did Sam leave his bike recently?”

“In the desert, near the Devil Rocks.”

“I’ll get the car,” Mr. Reynolds stated, but Walker cut him short.

“Sorry, you’re due in court. Tom, you get back in there, and try to get an extension. Introduce what I’ve uncovered.”

“Which must be previously disclosed to me,” the Reynolds’ lawyer smiled, as though he could dismiss it entirely.

“You’re client’s construction company, directly involved in the future constructing on reservation property, where the Trustee in control of authorizing such a construction, being Sam Feathers. Being a minor, only a parent or legal guardian can sign the papers to approve the construction.” Tom smiled as he crossed his arms in front of the arrogant lawyer. “I’d say you have some dancing to do, wouldn’t you?”

“Get in there!” Walker stated, and with Trivett in tow, headed for his own truck.

“I’ll come with you!” Tiny shouted. “The kid trusts me, so does Aubrey.”

“Sorry sir,” Walker stated. “But if you have to be in traffic court today, you best be there. I’ll make sure that Aubrey knows you’re looking to catch up to her later.”

Tiny looked at his ticked, noticing the date, being today, as to when he’d have to appear. If it was one thing he was punctual on, it was whatever court appearances he was to make, it kept him out of jail – most of the time. Reluctantly he nodded. “Thanks. Tell her I’ll bring dinner by tonight.”

“Will do. Trivett, lets go.”

Several of the main streets out of town, were unusually clogged for mid afternoon. She had to take several side streets to make any progress. But still she was stuck in a line of traffic, waiting for the flag person, of a construction site, to let the line go. The longer she sat, the more she worried about her truck. It made unusual noises, ones she’d not heard before, as the engine revved high, then died back down, and sounded like it was trying to pass water through the cylinders, and threatened to die altogether.

“Come on, you old clunker, get me to my son, please,” she quietly pleaded.

As the line began to slowly move, the truck plodded right along, practically backfiring all the way. But as she was directed to drive over a small mound of dirt, the truck gave a heavy jerk, and then died.

“No!” She turned the engine off, and tried to restart it. Nothing happened. The engine tried to turn over, but it just wouldn’t go. One of the workers directed cars around the dirt and went to the truck to speak to her. “I’m sorry,” she pleaded, trying to start the engine again. “It won’t restart!”

“Hang on, we’ll back you down. It may be that you’re low on fuel. Hey! KEVIN!! Hold the line!” Within a few moments the line of cars stopped. “Ok, let it roll back and try it again.”

She did, but again, the engine wouldn’t start. He got out and lifted the hood, trying to see if the engine block had sprung another leak, when she heard a familiar voice form one of the cars that hadn’t finished passing the mound of dirt.

“Got yourself in a mess have you?”

She looked over to see old CD Parker in his old, yet shiny, sedan. “Mr. Parker! You gotta help me. My son, Sam, he’s run off to the desert outside the reservation. Please I’ve got to get to him. Can you give me a lift?”

“Well sure, but what about the truck?”

“Sure lady, what about the truck?”

Aubrey looked at the old blue and white beast, than to one of the men on the side. “Hey buddy!” the man looked up in time to catch a set of keys flying at his head. “Keep it!” and she got into the car with CD and drove off.

He couldn’t believe what she just did! She abandoned her means of transportation and got into a smaller one with an old male! Where was she going!! Who was that old one!? He couldn’t fit in that vehicle. How would he follow her!? Kal quickly looked around, recognizing the sound of the sirens of Law Keepers coming closer, and opted to leave. Whatever she may have hastily promised the old male, she most likely wouldn’t give much. Her son was the most important thing to her right now. So if he was to find her again, it was where ever her son was, or would be.

Kal quickly scaled the uprights of several digging machines, reaching the roofs of near by buildings in record time and with little effort. He then quickly mapped a rout to meet up with the boy, who was making his way across the deserted landscape already. It was with the boy he would complete his plans, with the boy he would get his mate. There was just one problem. He needed more.

As though on que, his communications system chirped for his attention.

Elder Ver’On to Kal-esh. Respond.”

“This is Kal-esh. I was about to contact you. I will be ready to leave at about local mid night cycle. But I need your help.”

Oh?”

“I need to complete the offering ceremony.”

WHAT!!”

“She can’t be too far ahead,” said Trivett, over the blare of the siren.

“She’s fighting to keep her son. She’s not thinking clearly. Sam’s scared of being permanently parted from his mother…”

“Neither of them are thinking straight.”

“You got it.” The flag man of a construction site waved the ranger’s vehicle through, holding up the traffic of the other directions. Quickly Walker stopped. “Did a blue and white pick up come through here? Rust all over it?”

“A woman driving?” Walker nodded. “She went that way!”

Walker sped off.

“What’s so special about these Devil Rocks?” asked Trivett.

“Old folks tail. I’ll tell you later. But they mean more to Sam; as to what that is, I’m not sure.”

“Walker WATCH OUT!!” As Walker cam around a turn, they had to stop quick, as a rusty blue and white truck blocked their path. “Damn! She’s gotta be here!”

The two got out as several workers moved to the rear of the stopped truck.

“Hey!?” Walker called. “Where’s the driver!”

“Stupid bitch stopped dead here, then jumped in a car with some old geezer.” The worker held up the keys as he tossed them to a college to get in the cab. “She said I could keep it. Shit I wouldn’t even haul bodies in this thing.”

“Which way?!” The worker pointed down the road, and the rangers returned to their truck and sped off.

The offering ceremony has not been observed in centuries!”

“I know elder,” Kal replied to the rather irritated Yautja over his link. “But the ceremony was initiated by someone here, and they had drawn my clan symbol on a stone. Since I was present for the ceremony, I have every right to see it finished. But it must be over seen by you, and your mate. Is El well enough to do that?”

El will be in seclusion until we return. That is all you need to know!”

“The ceremony is very strict. It involves her people…”

El cannot perform the dances required!”

“The dances are for show! I have no intention of putting up with them. All El need do is be present.” Kal could hear Ver’On growling under his breath on the other end of the link, “There will be no danger Ver’On. Of that I promise.”

You need not promise anything. I will ensure it. The site will be prepared, and I will bring the guards. You will continue with this ceremony, but I assure you, if anything upsets El, this whole thing will end. Whether the female you want agrees to come with you…or not!”

“Understood Elder. I am transmitting my landing coordinates now. Look for a stone site, two metras planet east of its location. That is where the ceremony will be completed. Kal-esh out.”

He didn’t even wait for confirmation of the coordinates being received. All he knew was that he was getting close. Close to the temple foundation’s ruins, close to his goal…, close to his chosen mate. As he moved, he could feel the surge of hormones in his body, his sense of smell becoming all the more acute, his body all the more sensitive to the environment around him, his loins becoming more agitated as he thrust his legs faster and faster, propelling him across the barren landscape. If his scanners were right, the boy was nearly there himself, if he was lucky, he could catch up to him and give him special instructions on what he was to do, and leave instructions for his mother. Soon, everything he wanted, everything the boy wanted, all would come true.

“Why in the world would your son take off?” asked Cd, as he turned the car off the main road onto the reservation main road.

“My parents and his father’s grand father are trying to take him away from me. And untill now, I’d no idea why. Turn off here.”

Cd turned his car off to the open desert floor, swerving around the various shrubs that were populating his path. It was getting late. The sky was already starting to darken. These fall days got darker sooner and sooner it seemed.

“Maybe,” Cd began, “there’s a reason that he’s running. From you that is.”

Without warning, Aubrey reached her food over and stomped on the brake, and when the vehicle stopped, she slammed the gear shift up into park, pulling the keys from the ignition. “If you think that I’m neglecting, abusing, or mistreating my son in any way, you are sadly mistaken. I thank you for the ride, now get lost!”

“Now look here!! Aubrey! Aubrey!”

Aubrey left his keys on the edge of the engine bonnet, as she ran off over the sand, towards the stone hills that her son had told her about. He had to be there, there was no where else for him to be. Not only that, the note he’d left told her that he’d be there. But as she reached for the note to be sure where she was going, she realized, it was gone. “Damn,” she hissed, envisioning it on the seat of her truck. She prayed she’d remember the hasty drawing, as she moved on over the sand.

He ran over the dirt, dry and light as it flew out from under his feet, and looked up to the entrance of the tunnel that he’d been trying to get to. He’d taken buses, as far as he could to the edge of the city, then stowed away on various vehicles that had gone out of the city. The last was a truck hauling lumber, stopping for only a moment at a gas station to fuel up. Sam recognized the station, and if he was right, he could make it to the tunnel across the land in just a couple of hours. And he was right. It was just getting dark with the tunnel came into view.

“Are you prepared?” a familiar man’s voice called from the void beside him, a gentle growl behind the words.

“I am.”

Kal purred openly, and handed the boy a stick, lighting the fire on the end with his weapon. “Enter the tunnel,” he said. “I will explain why I have come.” Sam took the torch and followed the unseen feet, leaving the impressions in the dirt before him. “I came to this world in search of a mate. I have not been able to find someone among my own kind, and there is one of your kind already mated to two of mine. She is a wonderful Ooman, and I was arrogant enough to think that I could take her from them. I was wrong. There is much I must learn of your kind, but I can tell you, your mother is the kind of female I want at my side. But, you are the lead male of your family. Only you can authorize me to take her as my mate. With you offering yourself to me, and with your words, that you would do anything if I would protect her, I am now looking for you to keep your word.”

“You want my mom?”

“Yes. And I want you to come with us. She will not leave you behind, and my people do not believe in separating mothers from their offspring for no reason.”

“Then I’ll do what I can to convince her.”

“Good. Here.” Kal took the torch and shoved it into the wall, handing the boy a tan hide. “Remove your clothing, and put this on. Not to worry, you will not be too cold. There will be a fire near by. Your mother will need to do the same. Though I’m not sure how to get her to undress.”

“I think I have an idea.” Sam stated and began to pull off his clothes, piling them on the ground, with another hide on top of it. Hastily he wrote a note on some of the paper left from when he’d had Ranger Trivett’s note book, then he followed the footprints further into the tunnel.

The daylight was almost completely gone now. In the darkening light, she’d stumbled down the ravine where she and Sam had retrieved his bike, it was the only way she knew she was going in the right direction. If she remembered his map correctly, the tunnel wasn’t too far over the next ridge. And she was right. The tunnel entrance stuck out like a huge culvert, not yet hidden by dirt or decorative stones. As she approached the entrance, she wondered if it was the right one.

“Mike,” she whispered, “please tell me I’m going the right way.”

As though to answer, the wind picked up and nearly pushed her into the tunnel. Normally, she thought, air flowed out of a tunnel, but this one was encouraging her to go in. Nodding to herself, she pushed on, into the tunnel. “Ok, if you say so.”

A short ways into the tunnel she stopped at a small torch jammed into the wall, and the items below it, topped with a stone, with an ‘S’ scratched on the surface.

Ver’On walked the halls of the ship, listening to the excited growls and howls of the young bloods recently gathered from their hunt city. Each of them were telling the tales of their kills, many young bloods still had to clean some of their latest kills. The smell of fresh blood still lingered in some groups. Several young bloods passed him, grunting in respect, but hardly stopping in their tales to their huntmates. Ver’On patted their shoulders, the compliment of ‘Good hunt’ in the gesture. The young bloods nodded again, before turning the corner.

Ver’On at last stopped at the door to his quarters, carefully he entered the code to unlock, and stepped inside. It was only a few hours sense he was last here, M’Pa was on the floor in front of El, both still sleeping. For M’Pa it was best. His dreads were slowly coming back to black. He looked over El, wondering if what he had to do was such a good idea. M’Pa wasn’t going to like it, he already didn’t. El was too close to her birthing, stress like this could throw her into labor early.

She turned in her sleep, then opened her eyes, looking up to Ver’On. “Hey,” she sighed, “are we there yet?”

Ver’On purred deeply, “Not yet My’El,” he replied, caressing her cheek. “How are you feeling?”

“Rested,” she smiled. “M’Pa finally got some sleep.” Ver’On nodded. “Have we picked up the hunting party?”

“Yes.”

“Then we’ll be going to the canyon next?”

“There’s been…a development.”

“What kind?”

“The kind I’m not going to like I bet,” M’Pa stated, rising slightly from the floor.

“My Kadji, did I wake you?”

“No My’El, like you, I am a light sleeper. Until we return to the main ship, and our little ones are born, I will not be able to sleep soundly.” Gently he nuzzled close to her belly, gently purring, as the babies inside moved, and chirped happily. Ver’On gave her a gentle hug, spreading his fingers wide over her abdomen, smiling himself as a baby seemed to turn into the palm of his hand.

“Now you’ve done it,” she laughed, “they’re awake.”

“Only for a while, My’El,” Ver’On sighed, tapping his tusks on her brow. “Only for a while.”

“What is this development, my brother?” M’Pa finally asked.

Ver’On sighed, and explained what had been told to him by Kal’esh. “In order to complete the ceremony,” he continued. “The mate to the Elder, must hear from the offered female as to why she is worthy of becoming the consort to the Yautja. If she passes, she may come along, if not, well…”

“Ver’On, she can’t!” M’Pa nearly growled. “The slightest stress will bring on the babies. NO! I won’t allow it!”

Before Ver’On could agree, El grabbed M’Pa, as she had done to Ver’On before, squeezing with those slender delightful Ooman fingers. M’Pa at once went to his knees, bracing his hands on either side of the resting bowl, his breath labored, eyes wide, lustful purrs and growls mixed in his lungs, trying to figure out just what feeling he should have.

“M’Pa, my wonderful second mate,” she cooed sweetly, but suddenly tightened her grip again, to be sure she had his attention. “Your diligence is driving me up a wall!”

“ELLLL!!!” he growled, desperately trying not to thrust his hips forward. “Please, My’El, don’t tease me!!”

“El,” Ver’On began, suppressing an amused chuckle at El’s bewildered expression. “He has not mated you in some time. A touch like that – to him, right now – is heaven. I think you should let him go, before he passes out.”

She did. “M’Pa, I’m so sorry. Please…forgive me…”

He leaned over her, purring deep into the crook of her neck. “There is nothing,” he sighed, “to forgive, my mate. It is I who must ask that. Please…tell me what caused your anger…please.”

“You both keep telling me what to do, all before I can decide. It’s really…oh…that’s nice…”

M’Pa stopped caressing her ear with his tusks, when she stopped speaking. He knew what she was going to say anyway. “Very well, My’El, I will look to you first, before voicing what I decide. Is that better?” El smiled and nodded.

“When we get back to the ship,” she said, “we’ll have some alone time together – just the three of us. The only interruption I will tolerate, will be our babies’ births. Ok?” Again M’Pa purred into her neck. “Now, Ver’On. What is this thing that Kal has gotten himself into?”

“It’s called The Offering. You have to appear to approve or disprove.”

“Oh yes, I remember. Well a decent dress should be in one of my bags. Am I allowed to sit?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Then the two of you can pick a good spot, and if you’ll feel better about it, M’Pa can carry me down to it.”

“Are you sure you’re up to it?”

“I’m a bit stiff from laying around for so long, I’m a bit restless, and my back is starting to hurt from being all quenched up. I feel I can manage. Just don’t hover too much. Ok?”

The two males exchanged concerned glances, but nodded their approval. There was a soft chirp from the ships intercom near the door, obviously turned down in volume so that El and M’Pa were not disturbed, should he be needed during a visit, or rest period. Ver’On quietly spoke to the male on the other end of the call, then returned to El. “We’ve arrived. I’ve ordered the Unbloods to disperse through the cliffs facing the site. It will be tight down there, but well guarded. I’ll leave the two of you to get ready, M’Pa, you’ll need to secure a tank for her.”

M’Pa nodded and got up, heading for the closets as Ver’On, headed out the door. He had an uneasy feeling about this whole thing. But the sooner they got it over with, the better, and less stress to be caused to El too.

Sam’s clothes. That’s all there was. The clothes, and a tan dress like sack. As she sifted through the clothes, a piece of paper fell out to her feet. Quickly she picked it up and read it. “Mom, I knew you’d follow me. You need to trust me. Please. Just take off all your clothes and put on the tan dress. Please mom. Trust me. Just do it. I’ll explain everything. I promise. Love Sam.”

She dropped the clothes on the ground, and tried to get up, only to have the wind nearly push her to the ground. Whatever storm was coming, it was going to be big. She looked at the note once more, then began to undress. “You better have a damn good explanation young man,” she huffed, and pulled the tan dress over her head. “God, I’m gona freeze.”

Walker pulled his truck to a stop next to a familiar car, stuck in the dirt. “CD! What are you doing out here?”

The retired ranger got out of his car, and leaned into the truck. “You’re not gona believe me if I told you,” he replied.

“Would it have anything to do with a woman name Aubrey Feathers?” Trivett asked.

“How’d you know?”

“You better get in,” Walker stated. “How long ago did she get here?”

“I drove her here after her truck broke down. She took off not too long ago. Headed over to those hills, said that her son ran off to that spot for some reason.”

“Its really getting dark,” Walker observed as he turned on the high-beam head lights. “I hope they’re ok.”

The sky was good and dark. The fire he’d lit was burning high, warming the area around him. Among the cliffs and crevasse around him, he could hear the excited chatters of the young unblooded males, as they shared their stories of the hunts they just completed. Many of them still had the scent of fresh blood on them, not given enough time to clean their kills completely before being collected by the ship. The offering circle was occupied by a loan Ooman male child, and despite the chill of the air at this late hour, the area was quite warm, thanks to the fire, and an after thought of the heat from the engines of the ship, as it hovered overhead cloaked for protection. Kal nodded to the young males as they moved among the rocks, assured that they knew not to harm any one who came into the area, unless he told them to do so.

At the forefront of the clearing, beneath where he’d painted his family and clan symbols on the rocks, was a huge bolder, dipped slightly in the middle, where M’Pa and Ver’On were settling El. At first glance he thought her body would split open at the slightest touch, but she managed a few stiff paces, before she put her hand on the bolder to sit. She would give birth soon, he hoped for her sake anyway. He’d never seen a female so large with offspring before. Her dress, though large, was strained beneath her arms when she lifted them, and did not allow for much room at her girth. He wondered if Aubrey would be the same way with his young.

An unblood patted his shoulder, showing off his prized skull, saying how difficult it had been to kill the Ooman, but that his skill proved better. Kal nodded and patted the boy’s shoulder in return, then moved over closer to the boy. Everyone was still cloaked, except for El and some other Oomans at the front with her. Sam though seemed unfazed by all that growling and clicking going on. He felt perfectly safe and at ease in the circle close to the fire. Kal patted the boy’s shoulder. “She will come,” he whispered.

“I’ve no doubt about that Spirit Walker,” he said. “I just hope she can forgive me for worrying her.”

“She will.”

“You sound so sure.”

“She is your mother. You are her only son. Of course she will forgive you.”

“SAM!!!!”

“MOM!!!!”
