Chapter 9: Two minutes too late

They walked into town in complete silence. Jack didn’t seem fazed by anything at all. But Abby looked in every corner, jumped at every sound, expecting to see a redcoat come out and shoot him. She tried to relax but she never could. She had no idea how Jack did it. He was even walking with an extra skip it seemed. It was only when they got to the edge of town when Jack finally started to slow down and take a few more precautions. It was close to dusk by now, yet many people still roamed the streets.

“Jack we can’t just walk through the streets. Someone will recognize you.” Abby whispered. They crouched down behind a stack of barrels that some merchant put down carelessly, only concerned about getting them out of the way before the morning rush.

“Firstly dearie, its Captain Jack, and secondly the dear commodore wont be expectin’ me to come back straight to town. And thirdly, there are a lot of people walking on the streets, no one will even notice me.” Jack explained. Abby let out a snort and rolled her eyes. So bloody sure of himself. She thought. Jack ignored her antics and snuck around the barrels. Abby followed quickly, to frightened to be by herself.

“Jack your running to fast.” Abby shouted when Jack started sprinting to a nearby alley. If it wasn’t for her fear, she would have stopped and fell on the ground from laughter by the way Jack was running. His arms were flailing everywhere. Every once in a while it would look like he was about to fall over but the arm on the opposite side would fly up and balance him back out.

“Your not runnin’ fast enough.” He shouted over his shoulder. She followed him until she got to the alleyway where Jack was now walking with his normal swagger. Abby stopped running and took in a deep breath. She hadn’t run anywhere in such a long time, just running across the street made her have to pant for air.

“Damn woman, you need to get out more.” Jack said with a large smile planted firmly on his face.

“Screw you.” Abby replied when she was able to breathe.

“I would love to Abby dearest, but we just don’t have the time right now.” Jack replied then turned around and continued walking through the alley. Abby was sure her face was glowing red now from embarrassment and was extremely grateful that Jack had turned around quickly and didn’t see it. She didn’t stay around much longer to think about the subject. Her fear constantly reminded her to stay close to Jack. But not to close incase he tried to do something.

“Almost there luv.” Jack said after a while. Abby looked up from the ground and indeed a huge house loomed above her. The ‘Mansion’ didn’t even seem to compare to this. She looked around the front lawn of the house, everything was perfectly landscaped.

“Comin’ Abby?” Jack yelled to her when she got to far behind. She shook her head to get rid of the daze that had taken over.

“Yeah sorry.” She mumbled in reply. They made their way to the back of the huge house, making sure to duck below the many windows so they don’t get seen.

“How do you know the Turners?” Abby asked, her curiosity getting the best of her.

“Long story for another time.” Was all that Jack said on the subject and Abby wasn’t about to push it any further with the tone he gave her. Abby almost ran into him when he stopped suddenly. They were crouched next to a side door that led into the magnificent house. There was no doubt that it was used only by servants. Jack took one more look around to make sure no one was watching him, then silently slipped into the house. Abby followed behind him quickly. The door led to a long hallway, it was dim except for the occasional candle that was burning on an end table. Jack made it through the halls extremely quiet, but Abby ruined his plans when she stepped on a seemingly extra squeaky floorboard. Jack straightened up from his slouched over position and turned around quickly to face her. His face was missing the normal smirk. In its place was a deep scowl, as if she made the noise that would grant him death.

“I have a slight problem luv,” Jack started, what looked to Abby like the start of a long speech. “I don’t want to be seen just yet, but if ya don’t…hmm… be quiet, I will get caught and if the wrong person sees me, like the governor, I will undoubtedly get sent straight to the commodore. Which isn’t high on my list of things ta do at the moment, so if you’ll please.” He finished by putting a finger to his lips and shushed her. He didn’t wait for a reply of any kind from her, he just turned back around and continued sneaking down the hallway.

They didn’t have to go much further to find a different room. The hallway led them straight into what looked like the living room. (Is that what they called it?) The drapes where open, allowing what was left of the sunlight to shine in. Abby looked at Jack when she heard a loud ‘thump’ beside her. She let the smile come to her face when she noticed he was looking through one of the many cupboards for something to drink.

“Jack you shouldn’t do that.” Abby tried to scold him, but the humor was evident in her voice.

“No worries, we are good friends me and the Turner’s.” Jack replied. He let out a growl when he didn’t find anything to drink and came back over to Abby.

“What do we do now Jack?” Abby asked as she watched him. He could tell she was tense, he could see her body stiffen even more with every step he took closer to her.

“We wait… unless you can think of somethin’ ta do.” Jack said and wriggled his eyebrows a couple times, trying to give her a hint.

“Do you ever take things seriously Jack, or is it all about sex to you?” Abby asked harshly. She had obviously got the message. Jack let out another growl of frustration before answering.

“I take things seriously when they need to be.” He replied.

“Isn’t this serious? We just broke into someone’s house!” Abby practically shouted making him take a couple steps back as if saving himself from something more terrible than a mere woman who had only ever hit a person maybe twice in her life. Well, one of them people was Jack.

“I already told ya I know them.” Jack slurred in reply. Abby let out a sigh and shook her head.

“I’m not a pirate like you, this is too much.” She said and quickly made her way to the hallway they came in.

“Just wait luv, no ones even home… aah blasted woman.” Jack shouted for her but stopped when he realized she wasn’t about to come back. He caught up to her quickly and grabbed her wrist, making her spin around and face him.

“Jack let go.” Abby said. She wouldn’t look him in the eye. Her eyes traveled everywhere but there.

“Why are ya so scared?” Jack asked.

“I’m not, it … it…just feels wrong.” Abby replied. “At least pretend you understand and let me go.” Jack’s face stayed stony cold, but he did let her wrist go. She quickly walked the rest of the way out of the house and outside. The wind had picked up, blowing her hair out of her face. Everything seemed peaceful for once in her life. She let her mind slip from the world around her and go into nothingness. Everything seemed to stop around her, she didn’t hear Jack calling for her, she didn’t hear his rushed footsteps running up behind her. She wanted to stay this way forever. But it everything was gone soon. Her mind was brought back to the world when she felt a burning sensation in her shoulder. She came back to life two minutes to late.
