Chapter 8 – Admittance
“Well are you going to open the door or not lad?” Jack protested as he barged past him. Will stumbled backwards as the pirate charged through. With a patient sigh Will slowly relocked the door and counted to five before turning to regard the pirate with as tolerant an air as he could generate in the sudden circumstances. His eyes lighted on the boy first and the immediate reason for the pirates’ visit became clear.
“Oh no Jack. I’m not taking in another one.” Will protested desperately, already knowing that the pirate would somehow wheedle and coerce him into taking the boy in.
“Well he can’t stay with me and that’s final. So if he doesn’t stay with you or me he’s going to be wandering the streets… alone and be shanghaied into yet another slave job and like I’ve already said, he can’t stay with me which leaves only you or the street. So on your conscience be it.” Jack announced firmly, tugging his hand free of Sagar’s sharply and pushing the boy towards Will. Sagar immediately turned around and jumped up and down in an attempt to re-establish his grasp on Jack’s hand. The pirate quickly held both hands up in the air just out of the lad’s reach with a cruel grin.
“Jack, he doesn’t want to stay with me. He obviously wants to stay with you.” Will announced in relief at the boy’s objection at being abandoned by the pirate.
“Ah, NO! He’s staying with you and that’s final!” Jack announced glaring at the young man, his hands still held comically above his head as if in surrender. Sagar stopped bouncing and instead wrapped his arm through one of Jack’s belts.
The pirate cursed and swiftly attempted to remove the boy but to no avail. He gave up with a sigh after a few seconds of squabbling with the insistent lad who merely squawked indignantly at every one of the pirate’s attempts of extrication. Jack swiftly deciding truth was going to have to be announced in order to remove the child from the equation and his person.
“Will,” Jack proclaimed in his most pleasant tone, which only served to make Will even more nervous and his suspicion to rise more rapidly by the second. “I NEED you to take this boy off me hands because… because…” Jack winced slightly as the words refused to come. “Because, Oria has been… momentarily… err… immobilized,” Will raised an eyebrow and swiftly interrupted the pirate before he could skip past the subject.
“Immobilized?” The young man repeated, “How has she been immobilized?” he folded his arms awaiting some grand and ridiculous explanation from the pirate.
“She just has.” Jack snapped startling both Sagar and Will with his harsh tone. He sighed again and battled to control his impatience which was not helped by the desperately clinging lad. “Oria was… killed all right, and where I am going is no place for young lads or any form of life for that matter. He can’t come so he has to stay here with you… even if it’s only short term.” Jack attempted to persuade but he was rapidly running short of ideas to coerce the blacksmith with.
“She was killed?” Will queried with a confused frown. “What are you going to do about it?” Jack glowered at the blacksmith, why couldn’t the lad for once keep his nose in its rightful place and not sniffing around his business.
“Does everything have to be interrogated and investigated with you? Can I not just be going somewhere where the lad can not follow?” The pirate questioned in frustration.
“Where are you going?” Will kept his voice level. After several seconds of scowling at each other the pirate gave in and his eyes dropped dejectedly to the floor.
“To Davy Jones’ locker. Oria’s down there now and I’ve got to get there before said tentacled owner or god only knows what’ll happen.” Silence echoed about the room for a few seconds disturbed only by Sagar’s dejected sniff.
“Right, well the boy can not stay here.” Will stated causing Jack’s head to shoot up fast enough for several of his beaded dreadlocks to bounce frantically, one missing his nose by millimetres.
“What? But…but… but…” Jack stuttered dumbly for a few seconds as Will buckled his belt about his hips, including sword and flintlocks. “What are you doing?” Jack spluttered in shock, desperation, hell, disbelief for all he cared at that precise moment in time. The point was that the young man was doing something he wasn’t supposed to be doing and that was not doing what the pirate wanted.
“I’m coming with you.” Will announced with a no nonsense air while bundling some of his other belongings into a small satchel.
“What?” Jack squeaked staring incoherently at Will who was stood in front of him and all the lad did was shrug, the satchel dangling over his shoulder.
“I’m coming with you,” Will repeated matter-of-factly. “You’ll have to find somewhere else for the boy to go. Elizabeth may take him in until we return or one of her maids.” Will attempted to compromise with the pirate who still looked as if a whole parade of cannons had fired in his face.
“Why?” Jack queried with a suspicious glare the shock temporarily put aside in favour of quizzing the quizmaster.
“Why not? You and… well… ‘you’ are my friend. Why would I not help you rescue the one you love? After all, you helped me rescue Elizabeth.” Will coerced gently while skipping over his distrust of Oria. Slowly Jack nodded his understanding and acceptance and began to turn back towards the door, hindered somewhat by the boy still hanging like an over-sized stuffed ornament from his belt.
:/
Eventually they arrived at the Governor’s Manor, the metal gates swinging open easily as the pair strode through, the boy still dangling from an increasingly annoyed Jack. “Will you for the love of God please let go of my belt!” Jack finally shouted, causing the lad to jump in surprise and release his death grip on the leather belt at Jack’s flapping hands insistence.
The pirate sighed with relief and walked more freely up to the Manor. Raising his fist quickly to pound on the door when he paused and stepped back, “You know what… perhaps it would be more appropriate if you did the pounding and I did the hiding. Pounding pirates are only acceptable in some areas and I have a feeling that this isn’t one of them.” Jack suggested with a grin as he ducked behind an ornate plotted plant to the right of the door. Sagar was attempting to join him and reattach himself to the belt only to be pushed insistently back towards Will.
Will sighed and reached to grasp the boy’s hand before knocking gently on the door. A few seconds later the ornate wood slipped open to reveal a weathered face. “I am sorry Sir but the residents of the household… Oh, it is you Master Turner. Is there something that you require Sir?” The man quickly changed his tone to a softer one on recognizing the young Mistress’s favourite.
“Actually, if it’s not too much trouble I really rather urgently require council with Miss Swann.” Will begged adopting as formal a tone as possible that would not get him teased for by the pirate later. He could already see the smirk on Jack’s lips at the formal tone he had adopted and knew he would get stickled for it later. The butler’s lips thinned considerably as they pressed disapprovingly against one another.
“I shall see if the Mistress is up to entertaining.” He replied curtly and waved for Will to step into the hallway, leaving the door for Will to close. Will pushed Sagar inside and ducked aside as Jack brushed past none too discreetly and slunk into the back shadows before the butler could return. The man stepped back into the hallway and motioned for the young blacksmith to follow him up to the room. Jack and the freshly reattached Sagar creeping up behind, hidden in the flickering shadows. The pirate desperately fighting the urge to scream, shout and altogether throw a tantrum, including stamping feet, as he was jerked backwards at every step by the boy’s slower dead weight.
