I see the way you look at her!

A/N- Sooooo here we go again :) Sorry it has been awhile, but real life is a fickle mistress when it is in constant battle with the muse. This came to me as i was laying in bed last night, and i just had to get it down. Hope you enjoy!

************************************************************************

The night was windy, and the Captain of the Black Pearl was loving every second of it. The feel of the waves slapping against his beloved ship, the bottle of rum clutched in his hand, the smell of the air that was tangy and sweet in his nostrils; everything was perfect.

"I see the way you look at her," a low voice from behind Jack almost made him drop his bottle. He looked over his shoulder to the brooding form of William Turner. Jack arched his eyebrow.

"Eh?" he asked, taking another drink of rum.

"Don't play games with me Jack....I see the way you look at Elizabeth....like you track her every movement with your eyes...I don't like it," William growled out, his hands clenching and unclenching reflexively.

"Don't get your knickers in a twist lad," Jack said, still keeping a wary eye on the whelp as he kept one hand on the wheel, and the other firmly grasping his bottle. "I don't want to let her out of my sights, yes, but take into consideration that the bonny lass that you are referring to did lash my onesies to the mast of me ship and left me to be krakken food."

"So...you watch her so that she can't stab you in the back again?" William asked, his hands relaxing...somewhat.

"Would you not watch the person that left you to die?" Jack shot back angrily. Angry at what, he couldn't really say; Elizabeth, maybe, William, for being the bloody eunuch that he was...perhaps.....Barbossa, for stealing his ship in the first place? There was so much that Jack was angry at, but mostly, he was angry at himself. Angry that the whelp had even noticed him watching Lizzie, and angry that even now, he was lying to protect the silly chit.

"So...you don't....you don't want her for yourself?" William asked, neutrally. Jack snorted and took another drink of rum.

"Will, I don't want her. She's a bloody pain in my arse and I will be glad when the both of you are off, sailing into the sunset, hopefully, in the direction OPPOSITE of meself...savy?" Jack said, finishing his bottle and tossing it against the deck, hearing it smash.

"Soon we will be out of your hair then, Jack," William said, turning to go back down below deck. "Sorry...that I snapped at you..it's just...things have been so difficult lately...I guess I was just worried," Will said lamely as he left the deck.

Jack closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to ignore the pain in his chest. He did want Lizzie, but he couldn't give her the life she deserved. He couldn't make an honest woman out of her since marriage scared the dickens out of him, and he couldn't betray his first love; the mighty ocean. Without anything to give her, he was better just letting her go.

Another voice, this one soft and full of hurt spoke behind him, causing him to grip the wheel tightly in pain.

"Since....I'm...a pain in your arse...Captain...I will not bother you..an.any...anymore," Elizabeth stuttered out as tears poured from her eyes. She had heard everything that he had said to Will, and it had practically torn her heart from her chest.

"Lizzie...." Jack half turned to look at her. She burst into tears and fled down below deck before he could tell her the truth...before he could tell her that he did want her, but he couldn't give her what she deserved...what she needed.

'It's better this way mate,' Jack thought to himself, desperately wishing he hadn't finished his rum so soon. 'She deserves so much better then me.'
