Piano Man

Chapter 9 - Piano Man

Elyse had too many thoughts running through her head. She knew she should just go to her room and go to bed. She’d never be able to sleep now. It was nearly midnight, the hotel lounge would still be open...she hoped. She was in luck.

"Tequila with lime, please" She ordered.

She had downed the first shot and ordered another before she noticed that the music being played was live. As she peered around the bar to the other side, there was Roux, eyes closed, all alone, playing piano in his own world. She did not recognize the tune. It was beautiful, peaceful and serene just like Roux's face was at that moment. Before she realized it, she was standing beside the piano, being drawn into his space. In Roux’s

mind, in this music he could see Elyse, her beautiful sparkling eyes. He hoped he would have the chance to get to know her better. Elyse sensed intense emotion in Roux as he played. Suddenly, Roux sensed a presence nearby. He opened his eyes and stopped playing. He was absolutely stunned that the woman he was just dreaming of was now standing right before him.

"Hello, Elyse, isn't it?" Roux's eyes lit up and he gave her an easy smile.

"Yes, that's right and you would be Roux." Elyse extended her hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

Roux shook her hand, lingering a bit to enjoy the softness of it. "And you." He could sense that his feeling had been right about her. This was a special woman. She was warm, intelligent, funny and those eyes. Jack had not exaggerated about their beauty. They were just the color of the water in the Caribbean and they sparkled like the sun sparkles on the ocean.

"I hope I'm not disturbing you. I’ll have to admit, I was quite enchanted by your playing. I walked all the way over here without realizing it." Elyse could not help but look deep into those soulful brown eyes. She felt like she had always known him.

"So, I’m a modern-day version of The Pied Piper?” Roux laughed. “You aren't disturbing me in the least. The manager here indulges me while I just unwind a little. I couldn't sleep."

"Neither could I." Elyse suddenly looked sad.

"What's wrong? Did something happen?" Roux's eyes grew dark. "Weren't you with Jack?"

Elyse was suddenly embarrassed. She didn’t want Roux to have the wrong impression of her, but somehow he seemed so understanding. Surely he wouldn’t think too harshly of her. Besides if she judged Jack right, she would guess that by the next day everyone would know about the two of them anyway.

"Yes, well I suppose you'll be hearing all about it any way. Jack and I were in the elevator...and I...against my better judgment…well, you see…I’ve had a crush on the man since I was sixteen years old…so…I pushed the stop button and basically threw myself on him." Elyse looked down at her glass. She couldn't believe she was telling an almost total stranger these things.

"I swear, in my entire life I have never done anything that forward. I don't know what came over me." She grimaced.

"I know what came over you...Jack Sparrow came over you." Roux looked down, disappointed.

"Well…we were....interrupted by Will. He said Jack had to come with him, something about an urgent legal matter."

Roux had that distasteful expression again. "Oh, that...yes, I see".

"I don't know why it has upset me so. I suppose I am really just disappointed in myself for getting lost in the moment. It was such a stupid thing to do." Elyse looked like she could have cried. It had been such a long, eventful day. The flight from Washington seemed like ages ago. Had it only been one day?

"Roux placed his hand on hers. "Don't worry Elyse. Jack just brings out things in people, sometimes good, sometimes not so good."

"Well, let's change the subject, shall we? Let me congratulate you on the show tonight. I enjoyed it so much! You were wonderful! Elyse's face became animated again.

"Good. I'm so glad you liked it. Roux felt like he was 12 years old. "So I trust that means we'll get a favorable review from you?" Roux chuckled

"Oh, Absolutely...an excellent review...those new, young bands have nothing on you guys, I am happy to report!" Elyse could feel a huge smile appear on her face. She felt silly, but she could not stop it. "The song you were playing when I walked in. What was it?"

Elyse felt as if she could talk to him for hours. She wanted to learn everything about this man.

"That was a song I've just started writing. What did you think of it?

Honestly?" Roux's eyes were glued to her face, trying to read her expression.

Elyse smiled shyly "I'd like to hear it again, can you play it once more for me?"

"With pleasure, Madame!" Roux took his hand from hers and placed it on the keys with the other. Closing his eyes, he began to play. His face once again exhibited a serene beauty. In his mind, there she was in his arms. He was holding her, breathing her in. She was laughing, looking at him with eyes of aquamarine.

Meanwhile, Elyse was taking in the sight of him and listening to the most calming, peaceful music she had ever heard. Although it was calming, there was an underlying excitement stirring there. She imagined it would be a difficult balance to achieve. She felt the earlier tension she had now leave her body, she felt like she could float away.

Roux opened his eyes as the song came to an end. At that moment he thought she was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen. "So, Ms. Rolling Stone Reporter, give me a review!"

Smiling gingerly, Elyse looked up at the ceiling, closing her eyes to consider what she had heard..."calm...mystical, serene, peaceful and beautiful. It made me think of a cool, starry night at the beach or on a mountain.. That wondrous music was exactly what I needed to hear tonight."

Roux beamed "Wow, that is quite a description but then I guess you would be good at descriptions, being a writer. Maybe I'll even name it after you when it's finished."

"Oh don't be silly, you want it to be a hit don't you?" Elyse laughed.

They talked and talked until they were both ready to sleep. Roux took her hand once more as they approached her room door.

Roux smiled gently looking deep into those eyes once more. "I'm glad you wandered in tonight, it was great meeting you, Elyse.

"I really enjoyed talking to you tonight, Roux. You're an excellent listener I feel much better now.”

Roux gave Elyse a friendly kiss on her cheek. “You are, as well, Elyse. Goodnight, Sleep well.”

He watched as Elyse went into her room and closed the door. "I'm totally sunk." he said to himself.

Elyse entered her room, closed the door and leaned back against it. She took a deep breath and wondered how in the world she was going to get through the next few weeks feeling so attracted to two very different men.
