Jareth's Princess
She danced.
He sang.
It was a dream come true, until she heard a clock chime.
Suddenly she knew he wasn’t the one she was searching for. He had been her dream but to what she needed. Still he held her, spinning her, keeping her close.
Faces moved in a blur, the clock chimed. She tried to get away. She did break free and ran.
The other dancers laughed at the startled girl and pulled at her. She pushed past them and ran. Ran until the world ended.
It was glass, impenetrable and glossy. She banged and banged on the glass with her hands, but it wouldn’t break.
What to use? She spotted a chair, thrown just right it would break the glass and she would be free.
The glass broke as the clock struck for the 11th time, and the world fell.
“Damn!” a male voice muttered, a small clock chimed in the distance.
Sarah sat up in be, woken by a crashing noise.
“What?” she looked about in the dark, “What happened?”
“Nothing, Nothing” the smooth voice answered back. “I just stumbled in the dark.” A candle was lit and the darkness peeled away. “I am sorry to have woken you pet.” The owner of the voice came towards her holding the light candle.
He was the man of her dream, Tall and majestic, clad in formal, if slightly rumpled, court clothes. His hair was long, fine and blonde, it framed his face delicately. His eyes were laughing as if he had succeeded in something difficult. “It seems I have broken the mirror.” He said moving the candle about, the soft light bounced off the shards of glass. For a second Sarah could have sworn she saw people dancing in the glass.
“Tell me” he moved around the mess and sat on the edge of the bed. “What were your dreams.”
Sarah felt that he should know already, but she lay back and confided in him.
“You and I, we were together at a ball. I knew the ball was for mw but I didn’t know why. It was bright and magical, it was perfect.”
“Umm” he said watching her face with a guarded expression.
“You were singing to me, a song that made me wants to forget everything and stay.”
He interrupted “But then I walked in and pulled you away from your dream.” He tipped his head and kissed her on the cheek. “I am sorry.” He got up and started to move into the direction of what Sarah suspected was a dressing room. “Let me get ready for bed and you can tell me what I sang.” He threw a look over his shoulder “maybe I’ll sing it again and you will stay by my side forever.” He laughed.
Sarah laughed as well. Everything he was doing was making her feel as if they had known each other for years. It was if they were married, but she couldn’t remember his name. What was it? Where was she?
“Sarah? What is it? Can’t you remember the words?”
“Sss Something like that. I am still slightly confused,” she admitted. He came back into the room, his hair now hanging loose and his court clothes gone. All he wore were a pair of simple breeches.
The long lean muscle of his torso glowed in the candlelight. Sarah caught herself eyeing him up and looked away embarrassed.
He saw and laughed a low chuckle “Well it seems Jareth's little princess is a tad bit more awake isn’t she?”
Jareth! That was his name, of course it was. She must have been in a very deep sleep to forget who she was and what she was to him.
Jareth came back to the bed carefully sidestepping the glass. “ Now how awake is the princess I wonder?”
He came and placed his lips on hers in a gentile but probing kiss. Sarah’s senses heightened and suddenly the candle was burning very brightly. She parted her lips to gasp and her prince deepened the kiss, he thrust his tongue in and out of her mouth in swift darting motions teasing and tempting her.
This felt so right to Sarah, of course she was here where she belonged how could she forget? His kiss made her feel aware and alive in a way she had never experienced before. It was electric and magical. His kiss deepened and Sarah mewed at the back of her throat trying to pull him closer.
She suddenly wanted to feel that chest under her hands; she wanted his and her hair to cover them both. Suddenly she wanted him naked and open to her.
Jareth pulled out of the kiss and quickly mumbled something.
Sarah was disappointed, why was he holding back, this was right.
“Oh sweetling, I am so sorry, our wedding night and all, and I had to leave your side. I then leave you to the wee hours of the morning and wake you rudely. I’m sorry” He sighed. “I am such a cad” he got up and pulled a bell cord. “Every princess should have a magical wedding night, but let’s get the glass cleaned up before someone gets hurt.”
Sarah nodded, trying to make everything clear in her head, but so little made sense. “I must still be half asleep. I am so confused about everything.”
“Oh dear. I knew it! You must have had too much wine.” Jareth sat down on the bed and wrapped his arms around her. A dwarf who looked very familiar to Sarah came in and swept up the broken mirror.”
“Talk to me Jareth, tell me what I can’t remember.”
He laughed, “What is there to tell,” When the dwarf left his hands ran themselves along the back of her spine, “I’ve watched you grow up. We were friends, me as a young King and you a princess of my closest neighbour. We were friends from when you were very small. We fell in love and I petitioned for your hand.” He took Sarah’s hand in his own and kissed it veryhtlyhtly, looking into her eyes as he did.
The look spoke of a thousand dreams yet to be lived, all with in his arms and this very room.
“We were married today,” she added, it all becoming clearer. “But you were called away after we said our vows. I danced a little and drank some wine.” She giggled nervous.
“You haven’t had much wine until now have you pet?”
“No,”
“Well tomorrow I shall make it up to you my newest princess.” He bundled her into his arms again. The heat his body gave off was almost electrical. Sarah could only think of what his kissed did to her. “We should sleep for it has been a long day for the both of us.”
“What if I were to say that I have slept enough?” Sarah ventured, hoping for another spell binding kiss. Jareth just held her tightly and chuckled.
Outside their room a clock started to chime the hour.
Jareth kissed Sarah and made her his princess truly while a baby cried.
He sang.
It was a dream come true, until she heard a clock chime.
