Reporter in The Mog

Sitting nervously Charlie looked around twisting her notebook in her hands. The Mogadishu situation was getting worse and she knew something was in the air. Everyone was moving around pretending nothing was happening but they had made her sign the disclosure document, not for nothing she was sure.

She saw General Garrison approach and she noted his stance, strong, firm a man who believed he controlled the situation. 'Hello Miss Willis, Welcome to the Mog.' She had been there almost 4 hours now but this was her first formal welcome. The chopper pilot had been pleasant enough although she had found the young ranger who rode the same chopper a little cocky.

She was given a short guided tour of the base as her bag was taken to quarters she had been assigned to, she found it interesting enough but it wasn't what she had come for, 'Will I be able to speak to any of the men?' General Garrison looked down at her, 'I'll have a word with the boys and let you know.' She nodded her head although she was a little annoyed, all this was supposed to have been done for her arrival. 'We've prepared you with your own private head. Nothing fancy but its yours for the duration. You'll have to eat with the men though.' 'That’s fine with me,' she answered sounding more confident than she felt.

She entered a room that was more closet than room and saw a bunk and a table and chair, a door was in one wall with access to a toilet and shower. 'Like I said nothing fancy. So your English?' 'Yes,' she answered surprised he seemed to be taking an interest, 'Northeast.' she carried on. 'Nice country. Chows at 17.00 someone will come and give you a knock to take you.' 'Thanks,' she said. 'You and me will sit down for a talk tomorrow,' he said as he began to close the door. 'Miss Willis,' he said as he closed the door too.

She took the two steps to the bunk and flipped open her small rucksack. The room though small had a tiny window and she could another Black Hawk coming into land. She peered out of the tiny pane and stared at it, watching as the uniformed men climbed out. She couldn't resist a man in uniform. As she watched her eyes were drawn to two of the men and then a third who was dressed in civilian clothing and carrying some kind of animal. As she watched they moved past her little room and its small view onto the world.

The one without the uniform turned and saw her looking, but she couldn't seem to stop as she looked into his brown eyes. One of his companions slapped him hard on the shoulder in a display of manliness she was sure.

He soon disappeared from her sight and she went back to the inside of her rucksack. There wasn't really anything to unpack so the lack of storage suited her fine. She stepped into the adjoining toilet and shower space and turned on the stream of cold water as she closed the door behind her. The air was sticky and warm so the coldness of the water felt good on her skin, as she stood cleaning her hair all she could see were those brown eyes looking at her.
