"Anythin' else for ya, then?"
The cashier, a teenage girl with pink hair and wire rimmed glasses asked, glancing across the counter at the young woman who wore sunglasses in the middle of the night.
Lora Williams smiled, keeping her eyes down at the array of purchases in front of her. A bag of plain potato chips and a diet soda. Her stomach growled in anticipation as she fingered the driver's license in her pocket, trying to remain calm.
"Yeah." She finally answered, watching the cashier rang up the sale and loaded it into a bag.
Lora held her breath until the girl handed her the ce fre from a ten-dollar bill.
"Thank you." She murmured, forcing herself to look up. The cashier smiled forcefully and turned back towards the small TV behind the counter, causing Lora to feel the familiar surge of relief as the bells on the door jingled behind her.
A light blue Toyota Supra sat parked at the end of the lot, hid in the darkness of the Sacramento moon.
The soft thud of Lora's black leather boots sounded like thunder against the damp asphalt as she quickened her pace, unlocking the car door and nearly leaping behind the wheel.
"Shit." She muttered, wincing as she moved her right hand to the leather-coated wheel, grasping it until her knuckles turned white.
Slowly she moved so the seat buckle removed itself from her bruised side. Her soft blue eyes scanned the parking lot for a long moment before finally falling on the rear view mirror. With another deep sigh, her fingers caressed her cheek, removing the sunglasses to revile a dark purple bruise under her left eye.
Lora started the car quickly and turned her attention to the street, brushing back a few strands of shiny black hair before pulling out onto the highway.

Lora pushed her key into the door with effort, trying to jiggle the pathetic lock open. After a few minutes of struggle, the apartment door swung open to reveal a somber looking man standing in the dark.
"Where the hell have you been, Lora?" He asked, in a deep emotionless voice.
"I went to the quick stop.. to get some... food." She answered, automatically.
"It doesn't take that long to go to the fucking quick stop, Lora! Where the hell did you get money for food anyway?!"
Joe, her boyfriend, raised his voice loudly.
"Cops are out everywhere tonight, Joe. I couldn't go over the speed limit.. and Marty gave me some money yesterday.." She went on, backing up as Joe came towards her.
The wild look in his eyes told her that he was messed up, worst than usual - and the three or four people passed out around the living room confirmed it.
"Where the fuck were you, Lora!?" He asked again, louder this time as he reach out and grabbed her tightly by the arms.
"I told you already! Get off me!" She yelled back, but he was stronger and in seconds she was pressed against the nearest wall.
"Don't fucking talk back to me, bitch! You stole money from me when I was asleep, didn't you?! We've got food here to eat but you just had to go out and whore around downtown!"
Joe's face was inches from Lora's, his short nails digging into her slender arms, leaving dark red moon marks against her flesh as he shook her.
"You're just a stupid whore! Get the fuck out of my face." He yelled, slamming her back into the wall before letting go of her arms. Joe reach into her purse and pulled out the few dollars left over from the ten.
"This is all you've got!?" He screamed, threatening to grab her again. Lora opened her tear filled eyes, nodding the best she could as he stepped back from her, shaking his head.
Suddenly, Joe backhanded Lora across the face, sending her to the ground on her knees. "Don't ever fucking steal from me again, bitch!" He ordered, throwing the money down on her before walking out of the room.
-----------------------------------
Lora sat a plate down quietly, trying her best not to wake Joe up from his afternoon nap.
He was laying on the couch in the living room, snoring loudly from beer and pills and whatever else he had been into the previous night.
'Three years.'
She thought, rubbing her naked arm gently as a jolt of pain passed through it.
A deep black bruise had appeared on her upper arm a few minutes after Joe left last night and she knew it would be long sleeves for the rest of the week or else people would ask questions.
Then the police would get involved and Joe would deny abusing her - then it would be ten times worst the next time his rage surfaced.
Sighing softly, Lora sat down at the kitchen table and looked down into her reflection on a plate. Her once amazing blue eyes looked dull and lifeless, almost begging to fade out all together.
With another short sigh, she ran a hand through her hair and brushed back the short messy black layers from her face.
Joe had been so different when they had met three years ago, he had been sweet and loving and wonderful to her - but as the months turned into years he fell into the world of drugs and parties and nothing would ever be the same.
"Taking a break?" Lora looked up quickly, forcing a smile at Joe as he stood in the doorway of the kitchen.
"Yeah, I.. just wanted to sit for a minute." She assured, pushing herself to her feet with effort.
He had bruised both her arms and countless ribs in the past week.
"Did you sleep well?" She wondered, going back to the few plates on the counter.
"Yeah, I feel better. You know, about last night.." Joe placed his hand gently on Lora's shoulder, causing her to flinch at his touch.
"You know I was just messed up.. I know your brother gave you that money.. I just forgot baby. I'm sorry for yelling at you, alright?" He said, honestly.
Lora nodded, not letting their eyes meet as he kissed her cheek.
"I love you, baby."
