Prologue

The underground of the Paris Opera was completely dark. It was a place the sunlight never touched and never would. Still, it was no matter for Erik, who was accustomed to live in the darkness.

He walked for a while, so inebriated by hate that, for the first time, he did not know where he was going. All he wanted was to get way from his last image: Christine walking away of his life.

Sobs still shook his body when he opened the one door only he knew about, reaching the cold air of the night as he walked out of the building and into the streets of Paris.

Keeping his cape tightly wrapped around his body he was protected from the snow which fell from the sky. His heart was now as cold as the air around him. Tears ran down his unmasked face as he walked blindly on the street.

He heard the horses approaching and the noise of wheels on the gravel, but did not pay attention to it.

He threw a glance over his shoulder and, through tears and a dark street, saw a big shadow above him. He felt something beating against his chest causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground.

He thought of Christine as he closed his eyes. Anger filled his heart once more. Then the darkness… silence… peace.
