Assassin for Hire

AN: Okay... umm... for anyone on here that's ever played Dungeons and Dragons, this story is based, very loosely, off a campaign that one of my friends came up with.

Chapter One

Violet Dragon drank the last of her rum. She stared into the empty glass and sighed.

“Barkeep, more rum.”

The old man looked up from his task of cleaning the counters and shook his head.

“Would be yur fifth one Miss Violet. Are ya sure ya want another?”

Violet glared into her glass.

“If I didn’t want another drink than I wouldn’t have asked for another drink.”

The Barkeep stared at his feet as he spoke.

“No Miss Violet. I was just concerned for ya. I will get ya another drink right away.”

Violet sighed and stood.

“Never mind. Perhaps you are right. I will retire for the night. Do you have any vacant rooms?”

The Barkeep nodded.

“I have one vacant room. That will be one gold piece Miss Violet. Room two.”

Violet set the coin on the bar and picked up the small key. She watched as he picked it up and bit it.

“Crazy old man.”

She made her way up the stairs to her room and unlocked the door. It was a small room with two windows and a large bed. There were nightstands on each end of the bed and an oil lamp on each. The lamps were unlit but the moon outside provided plenty of light to see. Violet locked the door, lay on the bed and immediately fell asleep.

Violet woke with a bad headache. She slowly got out of bed and headed toward the door. As soon as she got to the door a woman’s voice called her from behind.

“Leaving so soon Violet? I only just got here.”

Violet spun around and grabbed the hilt of her sword.

“Who are you and what the hell are you doing in my room?!”

The woman wore a hooded cloak and the only thing that was visible was her mouth. She didn’t speak, only smiled.

“Answer me this instant!”

The woman started laughing and disappeared in a flurry of silver smoke.

“What the Bloody Hell is going on?!”

Violet stared at the spot were the woman once stood.

“Probably a person hired to kill me….or a stalker….maybe both…..maybe someone seeking revenge?”

Violet started to think about her past. The faces of all her past victims flashed before her eyes.

“It is over with! Stop reminding yourself!”

She tried to clear her head as she walked down the stairs. As soon as she got to the bottom the Barkeep called to her.

“Miss Violet, you have a message.”

Violet sat down at the counter.

“Who is it from?”

The barkeep walked to where she was sitting. He folded his arms over his chest and stared at her.

“A man named Jack something. He sorta slurred his last name. He said that you owe him money. He will be waiting at a ship called the Black Pearl in the west dock. He said to be there by noon.

Violet glared daggers at the man.

“I make it a habit to stay out of debt. Thank you for delivering the message however. I am going to kill Jack.”

She left in a rush of anger. Just as she was passing the alley near the bar her sword was taken from its scabbard. Violet turned to face her attacker. It was the hooded woman.

“Hello Violet. By the surprised look on your face I can tell that you weren’t expecting me. Good.”

“Who are you?! What the Bloody Hell do you want with me?!”

Violet’s sword was pointed at her neck. She began to work out a way of escape. She still had her dagger. It was enough to get her sword back.

“My name is Lia and I have been assigned to your death. That is all I need to tell you.”

Violet smiled.

“you really think that I am going to let you kill me? Well you are very sadly mistaken.”

Violet grabbed the dagger on her thigh and cut Lia across the arm. A thin strand of silver hair fell over her now red eyes. Violet started to run toward the docks. Near ten feet away from the Pearl, Lia appeared in front of her and sliced her across the stomach. Before the guard at the Pearl could do anything she was gone. Violet’s hand went to touch her stomach. She looked down and saw her hand covered in blood.

“Damn.”

Violet looked up to see Jack coming towards her. With that image her world went black.
