Nocturnal

Light. It does strange things to your perception.

He always looked better in the sun. His skin never used to be this pale, but he's nocturnal now, isn't he? He complains when the morning intrudes on his sleep, he turns over and pulls the covers higher. I stay up. Watch the sun rise and think about freckles and the smell of grass and his weight pinning me to Ireland. I think about the light that surrounded him, and I remember he looked better in the sun.

Not that he isn't still beautiful.

Full moon and I expect him to turn to me with eyes all silver, wild and fiery. But they are dark, and if I didn't know him like I know that blood runs through my veins, I would lose them in the night. Shadows of shadows fall across his face when he kneels above me. He smells of death, of justice, of Godliness. He cries when he finds me, and I bite my tongue and say nothing because the moonlight starts to suit him better.

It makes him look ethereal. It makes reality hit home and hit hard.

He arches, and I think, lupo, because he snarls when he comes, and his hair is messy and thick between my fingers.

I watch him fall asleep and dream through the daylight. He doesn't look so wild then. Just looks natural, like a man, like the brother I knew with freckles and amber in his eyes. His fingers wind through mine and I hold onto him.

I have to hold onto him because I know if I let go, I'll have seen my last sunrise.
