Ruffled
Author’s notes: I had originally intended this as a short story, annoying plot bunny. Then started drawing fanart to go with it and go figure the plot bunnies multiplied. So I'm going to continue it for now. I got the idea of Jacen & Kyp because they're always at each other's throats. Seemed some good tension there, ;)
Title: Ruffled
Author: Jedi Jace
Summary: Jacen wonders just what it is about Kyp that gets to him.
Rating: NC-17 (eventually)
Pairing(s): Kyp/Jacen, Jacen/Tenel Ka
Feedback: Sure :)
Characters: Mostly this is about Jacen and Kyp, but as Jacen is "finding himself" there are likely to be other pairings as well.
Disclaimer: I don't own Star Wars or any of its characters, so don't sue me.
Jacen Solo hated Kyp Durron. This was a fact.
Jacen smiled at his silent use of Tenel Ka's well known phrase. As he stood in the Jedi Temple's mess hall watching Kyp with his sister and younger brother, his arms crossed over his chest, he wondered why the older man brought out such a strong emotion.
To be fair, Jacen didn't hate anyone or anything. He was a lover of all life. He was constantly at battle within himself about the need to kill to survive versus the need for diplomacy. That's your mother talking.
He shook his head. He didn't like it but sometimes one had to kill to survive. He'd seen his parents make that choice, Uncle Luke, Chewbacca. And Kyp Durron.
Leaning against the doorframe, his eyes roved back over the smiling man as he told some amusing anecdote to his brother and twin. They seemed to be thoroughly into it from the looks of their shining faces. Again the feeling arose.
Jacen thought about it. He thought about it hard.
What if it wasn't hate? What was it then? Envy? Not in a million Corellian nights. Loathing? That didn't feel right either. Jealousy?
That one gave him pause.
Why would he feel jealous of Kyp? It's true he did sometimes as a young boy dislike the closeness that he saw between his father and Kyp. He acted as though Kyp were a son to him. He was always welcome at the Solo house. He'd lost count of how many times he'd just dropped in and joined them for dinner. Even babysat them as younger children at times.
He couldn't say that he felt he was competing for his father's affection. His father may not understand his head as well as he'd like, but he respected his beliefs and would always let Jacen find his own answers. No, it couldn't be jealousy.
Kyp finished his story and was rising from his seat. He patted Anakin on the head and winked at Jaina. Jacen felt a twinge at that, but ignored it. As Kyp headed his way to the exit, he looked into Jacen's eyes. His smile fell. Jacen was not his favorite person.
"Hello, Jacen."
"Kyp."
He looked around the ground at Jacen's feet. "Waiting for something to sprout?"
Jacen raised his eyebrows. "Looking for something to blow up?"
Kyp started at that, his eyes flashed. Jacen could see the anger well up in him.
"It's so easy with you isn't it?" Jacen shook his head, his lips sliding into a familiar lop-sided grin.
Kyp ignored the bait and stepped to get a cup of star-fruit juice. He had to lean past Jacen a bit to get the cup but didn't ask the younger man to move. Jacen noticed a pleasant aroma waft off Kyp's skin. It sizzled up his nose and through his veins. He jumped a little and moved away a bit, knocking over a few cups in the process. He caught them quickly with the force, then set them back on the shelf.
Kyp smiled at Jacen as he filled his cup. "My, my Jacen. Such an abusive use of the force. What would Master Skywalker say?"
Jacen gave him a look that would have seared the fur off a wookie's back. Kyp just smiled. "You know, you really need to learn to get that temper of yours under control. It could be your undoing," he smirked. He chucked Jacen under the chin and winked. "Have a good day now." He turned and strolled past Jacen out the door.
Jacen was boiling. Of all the arrogant...! He wanted nothing more at that moment than to beat the smile off Kyp's face. He watched his retreating back disappear around the corner and felt his skin on fire, Kyp's smell still lingering in his nostrils. He turned to see his sister and brother trying to hide their amusement. Jacen flushed red and fled the mess hall.
He pondered as he walked back to his room, how Kyp had managed to get under his skin.
