Chapter 1 (Sawyer’s POV)

I don’t know why they had sent me alone. Sure, Mia was my childhood friend but I hadn’t seen her, much less spoke to her in over five years. How was I supposed to even find her? But then Quartermain had to speak up and say exactly where she was. Who’s to say she would even accept the mission. She could be like Grey and refuse outright. Despite my issues with asking her to join us, I knew she was in this area and I wanted her to join us. Mia had hidden talents that even these people didn’t know about. She would be a real advantage if we could find her. She had to be somewhere. But where? This evening, this whole search seemed to be getting worse by the moment. The sickening squelch of my boots on the filth of the road echoed off the building walls, increasing the tension that was building in the air.

There! A noise in the alleyway to my left. My footsteps quickened until I came upon a man and a woman, engaging in some drunkenly intimate action. She pulled away briefly to knock twice on the door which she was so violently pinned up against in her lover’s haste to devour her. Only after the couple had drunkenly stumbled inside did I notice the sign swinging above the door:
Mia’s Tavern.

I had finally found it! I waited a few seconds to make sure no one was following me before I too headed inside the tavern. As I walked in, I was instantly struck by loud, raucous laughter and the sweet, alluring scent of liquor.

“Can I ‘elp you?” asked the bartending wench.

“I’m looking for Amelia” I whispered to her.

“An who might you be?”

“A friend”

She eyed me suspiciously “Follow me then”.

The wench led me past crowded tables of men and women singing drunkenly the words to songs I’d never heard before. Up a flight of steps and past a hallway where I glimpsed groups of barely-dressed, gossiping women who I could only guess what they did for a living and we had reached our destination.

“She’s in ‘ere” the woman gestured with her head.

“Thanks”

I placed my hand on the doorknob and entered slowly. What greeted me was the lithe form of a woman reclining in a chair, her eyes closed and long boot-clad legs propped up on a nearby table. The last time I had seen her had been five years ago, and it seemed to me that time had done her good. She had grown her hair out so it was about six inches past her shoulders, the dark brown strands flashing from the flickering flames in the fireplace and her eyes, normally green, would change shades with her shifting emotions. My eyes traveled from her high cheekbones and pouty lips to her collarbone, the soft swell of her breasts, and further down to the gentle curve of her waist and down her legs.

“Quite the establishment you have here” I said.

“Well, I try my…Tom! What are you doing here?!” She exclaimed as she jumped up to give me a hug like I knew only Mia could give.

“I came to see you, and I came to ask a favor of you.”

“Sure, anything Tom. Please, sit down and have a drink.”

“Uh, no thanks, I really shouldn’t.”

“You don’t mind if I do then?”

“No, you go right ahead with that.”

I couldn’t stop myself as she walked away from me, my eyes entranced with the gentle sway of her hips and arse.

“Hey Sawyer, there will be none of that tonight, unless you would like me to set something up with one of my girls…” she offered with a wink.

“Thanks, but I must decline, I have business I need to get done.”

“Well then, out with it man, what is this favor you need to ask of me?” she asked as she pulled out a chair at the table I was sitting at.

“Listen, I’ve recently joined a group of people who are dedicated to stop this oncoming war. I know you’ve felt it, I’ve felt it, we all have. We need your skills to help defeat this.”

“Well, as tempting as your offer seems, I can’t just drop everything and go off gallivanting with you like the old days. I have a business to run here with the tavern and my girls need me here.”

Mia set her glass down and headed towards her door.

“You’re welcome to stay here as long as you like but I have other business dealings. If you’ll excuse me…”

I was mad. This was the girl I had spent my childhood growing up with, having misadventures and getting into trouble. She would come with me if I had to toss her over my shoulder, kicking and screaming. In just a few strides I was in front of her, blocking her exit. Although I was only a few inches taller then her, it accomplished the desired effect as there was a flicker of fear in Mia’s eyes.

“You can get someone to replace you!”

It was too late when I realized that her back was to the door and her chest was pressed firmly against mine. Her eyes had darkened to a dark emerald color and our breathing was ragged. There was a heavy tension between us hovering in the air.

“You’ve become quite pushy in your old age, haven’t you Sawyer?”

“Will you do it Mia? For old times sake?”

“Alright, alright,” she sighed in resignation. “I’ll come with you on your bloody adventure. Just let me get things squared away with Emily, okay?”

**********

The train whistle pierced the fog ridden air as Sawyer and I stepped off the train.

“God, was that a terrible ride or what?”

“Just like the old days eh Mia?”

I shoved playfully at his chest and we continued on our trek to find our transportation. What did he call it? An automobile? Just what the hell was an automobile anyways?

“There they are, over there,” he pointed to a large white object with four wheels and silver detailing.

“Wow, this is amazing Tom.”

“I know, now just get in and we can get on with it.”

“What’s the rush dear?”

“We just have to get there. We’re already late.”

"You have become so anal with age."

"If I were you, I wouldn't be insulting the guy who's 4 inches taller than you and could easily kick your arse."

"You wish."

“Just where are we going, anyways? Some top secret hideout?"

“You’ll see Mia, you’ll see.”

“Fine, be mysterious.”

With that he was silent, leaving me to my own quiet wonderings about this strange mission and even stranger group of people. Much to my surprise, this automobile was amazingly quiet and comfortable. I had nearly nodded off when I was nudged by Tom to say we had arrived at our mysterious destination. I stepped out into the dark, rainy night *I love London* only to be presented with a most discrete building, much like any other structure in London. The driver retrieved my bags and Tom led me into the building and down several flights of stairs, giving off increasingly more the feeling of a dungeon than a secret hideout. Finally we came upon a room resembling a library, with warm lights and books to the ceiling. In the center of the room was an extremely long table with already several people gathered and seemingly waiting for our arrival…

AN: So, what do you think? Any *NICE* (notice I emphasize nice) feedback is appreciated!!
