Chapter One: Smoke and Mirrors

The atmosphere was palpable, the summoned generals all shifting uncomfortably as the Sith Lord swept past them. Roused early in the morning for this meeting, it had caught all of them off-guard.

Tyran had returned to the Death Star a great deal earlier than they had expected, and had been charged with discovering the whereabouts of stolen plans.

Tyran’s reputation for ruthlessness was well known; a dogmatic support of the Empire’s regime, Tyran would have no scruples in dealing with unfaithful allies or dissenters. Confident and powerful, the Dark Lord was not a person to be crossed. And this was why all the men present feared and admired the Dark Lord.

“Plans to the Death Star have been leaked to the Rebellion.”

Tyran’s voice, calm and collected, spoke these words carefully. The traitor was on the room, everyone present knew. Only they had the access codes for such sensitive information. Tyran had been with each of them at some point in the last two days, watching the, sensing their feelings, reaching out to their emotions.

“I will not have my name, or that of anyone I know, dragged through the mud because of one man’s delusions of grandeur. When I discover the identity of the betrayer, I will see him suffer. “

No one doubted her words. Still no one spoke, although glances where exchanged between many, accusing stares and conspiratorial gestures swapped. There had been a spate of dissention amongst the younger members of the Empire, those who did not know the ways of the Old Republic.

That ridiculous period of time where the people believed in equality and democracy, and only brought misery and suffering upon themselves. Yes, the regime was harsh, yes, it was brutal, but it was fair to all. Tyran believed these things very strongly, having being taught all her life by the best scholars in the Empire, no expense spared on her education and her training as a Sith. Though not yet a Master, she was still formidable, deadly, and determined.

Tyran’s personal interest in the traitors came from the betrayal her tutor gave her, threatening her life several times. He’d been executed at her 14th birthday celebration, before the Emperor and as proof of her willingness to follow Palpatine. She trusted her own abilities to lead her to the dissenter, the villainous individual who would sacrifice all the Empire had struggled to achieve.

They were uncomfortable, those in the room; even Tarkin, who was innocent to this crime, was feeling the pressure of her presence as she swept by him. No longer the proud loving wife, this was the heir to the Empire, as black and evil as the vastness of space.

It was closer; she could sense her target, her prey. He was close now. His deceit was clearly labeled upon him; she couldn’t believe she had not felt it before. General Katern, a leading member of the Imperial campaign, his loyalty stagnating into a deceit so treacherous that it could not go unpunished.

In her mind she saw his reasons; his father had been killed by the Empire. The feelings he had for his father, the betrayal, the disgust he had for the Imperial force wich killed his father led him to this.

“General Katern, can you verify your whereabouts at the time of the plan’s mysterious disappearance?”

The man looked petrified, pale and stuttering, he tried to deny, but it was futile. Everyone looked on, pleased to be free of suspicion. She saw Tarkin’s smile, Motti’s snort of disgust…each of the table had his own reaction, and each of them bore down upon Katern.

“It was you, wasn’t it? You stole the plans, passed them onto the Rebel scum you have chosen to side with and plant throughout our organization.” She snapped her fingers and signaled to the man on the floor.

Guards bearing blasters carefully yanked the man upwards, forcing him then down onto his knees, looking at Tyran’s feet. Her gloved hand turned his face upwards to gaze into her eyes, the look of triumph present as she delved into his mind, dredging forward what she wanted, the names of his Rebel connections.

Names, faces, people loved, lost, hated, desired. Places, memories, sadness, feelings emotion….she peeled it all back, determined for her information. This dangerous overkill of the mind influence was damaging her victim; his cries made the generals present wince, look away in disgust, but Tyran cared not…

She released Katern, he fell to the floor, limp, gibbering and drooling at the mouth.

“Take him away; I’ll deal with him later.”

There was a silence, the others taking in what had just happened, trying to get over the fact a mere woman could do that to a man. Eventually, the assembled generals stood up and left, leaving one behind with Tyran, the only one who would dare to stay alone with her. Grand Moff Tarkin.

“You haven’t lost your touch, Lord Tyran. Some thought that marriage would soften your resolve, but clearly not.”

Tyran looked at him, a blank look on her face as she analysed his motives. Mentally, she shook herself; you do not question the motives of your husband, you fool.

She turned to a console, and quickly began to key in some data, the screens flickering as they searched the Imperial network.

“These are the numbers of the rebels he had hidden in our ranks. Make sure they are found and punished in a suitable way.” She ordered. “Surely, Grand Moff, you did not expect me to become a good little wife who waits home crying for her husband to return to her? Perhaps next time you should ask for the hand of some innocent Outlander Princess.”

“There’s no need for formalities now we’re alone, milady?” He smiled wryly. She couldn’t help but allow the smile to slip onto her features. They played these games often, carefully ignoring the fact they were wedded when in public. Often opponents in debate, Tyran allowed nothing to interfere with her devotion to the Dark Side, and Tarkin did not allow his passion for the young Sith Lord cloud his judgement.

He carefully stroked her hand; this business with the lost plans had cut short their wedding holiday, and Tyran had not slept for days, determined to find the thief and betrayer. He had been warned of her devotions and eccentricities, but nothing prepared him for Tyran’s ruthlessness pursuit of the truth.

“Come now, my dear, you need to rest.” He said with concern in his voice; an emotion he rarely exercised, his wife, the jewel in his crown of achievements was the one person he could afford to waste emotion upon.

“Forgive me, I must first report to Lord Vader. Then I will join you.” She swept away, ominous as a storm cloud.

The transmissions room was totally black but for the slight up-light from under the holographic pad. Confidently striding to the end of the platform, se carefully bent into a bow, the ghostly image of the Sith Lord Vader looming over her.

“Lord Tyran, you have news, I presume?” the heavy breathing of Vader punctuated his speech, but in some odd way, She found it comforting.

“Yes, my master. I have apprehended the traitor, and I have the list of connections the Rebellion has in the Empire. I shall have each agent arrested and questioned, with your permission.”

“Granted. Be prepared to receive my presence”

“Of course. You will find the plans on the Alderaan Senators consular ship; it seems Leia Organa is one of the main leaders of the Rebellion.”

“Make sure preparations are made to receive the princess. You have done well, my daughter; the Emperor will be most pleased with this news.”

Notes:

I did say I would screw up Star Wars…I’m in a faze, not a mega serious fan but one determined to become one, so I have really good knowledge about Shadows Of The Empire and the movies, but I’m a bit sketchy in other areas. If you find something terribly wrong, email me, but do remember, it is AU.

Kyle Katern is in star Wars as an Imperial agent who becomes a Rebel when he discovers his father was murdered by the regime. He becomes a sort of fringe Jedi, not really training in it all the time but wielding its power. (I think). Here he decided to stay as a member of the Empire and spy from within.
