Enigma
Enigma
By: Tazzy
Rating: PG
Summary: Will muses about Jack.
Disclaimer: I don’t own ‘em because if I did, you wouldn’t know them.
Author’s note: This is in answer to a challenge and takes place two years after the movie ends. It’s just a drabble and is entirely my take on a certain pirate captain.
Sitting near the mast of the Black Pearl, Master Gunner Will Turner looked up from the nets he was repairing to study his captain who was standing at the wheel, steering the magnificent black ship through the crystal blue waters.
Captain Jack Sparrow was an enigma that Will was no closer to solving than he was two years ago when he went on account with the Pearl and her crew.
There was something unearthly about Jack, especially when he was at the Pearl’s wheel, as if nothing in this world could touch him or even distract him from his course. His manner often seemed puerile, teasing the tavern wenches and playing with any merchant captain they came across, but he was deadly serious about mutiny and only once since Will signed on had Jack dealt with the craven dogs who tried to take the Pearl away from him.
However, after only a few months under Jack’s command, one thing became startling clear to Will. Jack wore several different masks when in the presence of others, yet for all his trying and friendship, Will still could not tell which one was the real Jack Sparrow and had to wonder if he would ever know the man. One minute, Jack was a drunken fool and the next, he was as grandiloquence as any peer of the King’s realm.
In most ports of call, he was the nefarious Captain Jack Sparrow of the dreaded Black Pearl, and yet, Will had seen him drop a few pence in a beggar’s cup when he thought no one was watching him. Often, when the Black Pearl sided up to a merchant vessel, they didn’t have to fire a single shot since the black ship’s reputation in the Caribbean was well known, and even the few that they did have to fight, Jack never ordered his crew to blow the powder on the merchant ship. At worse, he had the sails cut, a harmless act that cost only time to repair.
Yes, Jack Sparrow was an enigma and one Will knew he would enjoy trying to solve for the rest of his life.
