"Get my armada off the ground!" The Lord Marshall growled, choosing to unwisely ignore the voice in his mind telling him it was too late...

*

Dame Vaako's eyes widened as the large soldier bumped her shoulder, twirling to catch sight of his back. Shoving through the crowd she strained to see above the heads crisscrossing in front of her. A brief moment, and then he turned, a flash of beautiful glowing eyes searing into hers. A blink and there was empty space where he stood a second ago.

'It can't be,' she thought. She grabbed her skirts in two fists and ran through the crowds to her chambers. She had to find her husband and tell him of what she saw.

*

Lord Vaako strode down the wide hall towards his chambers. He found himself restless after the ceremony, and had gone to check on his men, using the walk to clear his conflicted thoughts. Being made into the Lord Marshall's first was a great honor among the Necromonger race. Despite his wife's wishes, Vaako never truly felt a need or drive to be Lord Marshall...Unless the current leader lacked the strength to uphold the responsibility.

The Necromonger army was too large, too structured for the Lord Marshall to show fear. Vaako was content to follow, but the Lord Marshall's weaknesses were becoming more and more apparent. It could not continue this way for long, for others were already murmuring. Perhaps even plotting the Lord Marshall's demise as his wife did, every whisper in his ear an attempt to force him to action.

So when he watched Riddick fight, he accepted the deep respect that had budded from their first meeting when Riddick killed Irgun in combat. It wasn't difficult for him to recognize a fellow warrior, a man strong and powerful with a grace lesser men envy. A man so formidable the Lord Marshall himself feared him. He found himself reluctant to carry out his mission. But duty forced him to raise his gun and fire.

A strange backlash, perhaps a weapon malfunction, had thrown him and his men away. Raising up from the hard rock, he was unexpectedly disappointed to see the Furyan motionless upon the ground. When the planets' sun crested the hill, his ship returned, bleating a recall alarm. Making his way up the side, shielding his eyes from the light, he kept checking to see if Riddick would rise.

What bothered Vaako now was how much had he hoped Riddick would. Even telling himself it was treason to harbor such thoughts didn't quiet them. But, the Lord Marshall wanted him dead and after he had one last look at the motionless Furyan, that was the report he had received.

But walking in the low-lighted corridors, he couldn't help to think that things would have drastically altered, perhaps for the better, had Riddick lived and challenged the Lord Marshall.

He was so deep in thought, the thick forearm that shot out and snaked around his neck took him by surprise. Vaako fought as he was forcefully yanked back into a small alcove, but stilled when a sharp point met his throat.

"Where's the girl?"

Vaako's eyes widened as he recognized the voice.

"You were dead! I saw- !" Vaako exclaimed, flinching when the point pressed harder, a trickle wetness sliding down the side of his neck. He silently cursed himself for speaking foolishly in his shock.

"You saw wrong. Now where's the girl?!" Riddick said, his other arm holding the Commander's body tight to his. Any move on his part would be felt immediately and quickly countered.

"I can only assume she is with the new Purifier," Vaako said carefully, trying to crane his neck away from the sharp object, thwarted when Riddick threateningly shifted his grip.

"Take me to her. Now."

Vaako's mind raced as he stiffened, sure the Furyan would get them both killed.

"We'd never make it. It would be best for me to bring her to you- "

"What, you think I'm stupid? You'd sound the alarm as soon as you were out of sight. Take me to her," Riddick growled, the arm around his neck choking the rising protests before they could be voiced.

Vaako tried again, this time calming himself, forcing his body to relax in the deadly grasp.

"Even if we reach her, the people would be alerted and all of us captured. The Lord Marshall will have you brought before him and slaughtered without losing his authority. If you challenge him directly, kill him, she will be yours. I can help you," Vaako added as an afterthought. If it was to be, now was the time to gain a new Lord Marshall that wouldn't hold the Necromonger race back with weakness.

"Yeah, I remember you watching me. I remember you shooting at me too. Why should I believe you?" Riddick asked after a moment, his head tilting to the side to listen out for danger. Hearing and sensing nothing of alarm he tuned into what the commander was saying.

"It was not my wish to shoot you. If the Lord Marshall finds us, he will have me killed for incompetence as well. He has become weak and his rule has come to an end whether by your hand or not. I saw how you fought. I think it is enough to challenge him," Vaako said, slightly turning his head to catch the weighing eyes, willing him to sense the truth of his words.

Vaako's breath faltered as Riddick slowly slid his thumb around his jaw to press into his pulse point, in a disturbingly sensual touch. He took a shallow breath, not knowing whether he would live or die in the next instant.

Knowing it would intimidate the tense man in his grip, Riddick inhaled distinctly, the acrid smell of fear lingering over a pleasant smoky, woodsy scent. His pulse pounded against his thumb, but Vaako betrayed little of his elevated state in any other way...Riddick knew he was telling the truth.

Riddick suddenly released him, and moved back into the shadows.

"I'll handle it. If I were you, I wouldn't get in the way."

Vaako moved away as he rubbed his neck, wiping the small amount blood away.

"Alright, but- " he started as he turned to face the Furyan, stopping when he realized Riddick was gone. Eyes narrowing, the corner of his mouth slowly turned up. It looked like things would turn out better than he had originally thought.

He quickly made his way to his chambers, stepping back as his wife flew at him, strongly grasping his arms in her slender hands.

"He's here!"

He sighed internally, and placated his wife, playing along as she continued in her rant. He would continue the part expected of him, and be prepared should the Furyan fail...But he had a feeling Riddick would win.

*

"No!!!!" Dame Vaako cried, falling to her knees, the loss of her dream sucked into the silent aftermath.

Lord Vaako lowered his axe, his head bowing to hide his relief, and to center himself. He thought he would have to kill the Lord Marshall and take control, but the prophecy had proved true. Riddick killed the Lord Marshall.

Now it was time to acknowledge that fact...

Turning, he slowly made his way to the throne where the new Lord Marshall sat, slumped to the side, hand over his face. Feeling the Necromongers fall in behind him, he waited until Riddick raised his head, his hand moving from his eyes, body tensing for fight.

Going down on one knee, he bowed his head before tilting it just enough to make eye contact with Riddick.

"You keep what you kill," Vaako said, his words pitched only for the Lord Marshall's ears, as the people followed him to their knees in a wave of allegiance.
