Chapter 1: The Attack

As Anakin and Padme left to travel to Naboo, Obi-Wan confided in Captain Typho, "I do hope he doesn't try anything foolish." Usually, Anakin had the annoying habit of trying something dangerous and getting either himself killed or Obi-Wan killed. But Captain Typho merely gave a chuckle as if he knew something that Obi-Wan didn't.

"I would be more worried about her doing something, then him," Typho replied mysteriously. Obi-Wan wondered what the security captain meant by that remark. Shrugging his shoulders, he sat back down on the transport. The transport would be making two stops: Padme's place and the Jedi Temple. While they were on their way to the Jedi Temple, Typho turned to Dorme and Obi-Wan. "In order for the plan to be successful, we need to keep up the illusion that Senator Amidala is still here on Coruscant."

"Unfortunately, I have to begin my investigation of the attack on the Senator, so if you're suggesting a Jedi be Dorme's guardian, I won't be able to," Obi-Wan said. Anakin had been assigned by the Jedi Council to protect Senator Amidala, while he had been charged with the mission to investigate the attack and find out who was behind the attack. The only clue left behind was the dart that killed the assassin that had attempted to kill the Senator. Perhaps the analysis droids could understand the markings.

The first stop was at the Senator's apartment. Obi-Wan managed to convince the driver of the transport to wait until he checked out the Senator's apartment for any new surprises since the attack. After about half an hour of checkiObi-Obi-Wan was satisfied that there weren't any new surprises, so he went aboard the transport and headed to the Jedi Temple.

The first stop he made was at the Jedi Council. Only a handful of the council members were there, considering most of the Jedi Order was busy keeping law and order due to the chaos started by the secessionist movement led by former Jedi Count Dooku. However, Yoda, Mace Windu and a couple of other masters were there. "Mission a successful start off to, Master Kenobi?" Yoda asked Obi-Wan as he entered the chamber.

"Yes, my master. Anakin and the Senator are on their way to Naboo and I'm on my way to the analysis droids to get this dart analyzed. However, I feel that it might be necessary to keep up the illusion that the Senator is still here on Coruscant for a little bit longer and to accomplish that, Dorme, her stand in, needs a Jedi protector," Obi-Wan replied.

"Obi-Wan, our resources are stretched to the limit right now. I don't think there is anyone available for the job," Mace Windu frowned.

"I realize that. However, I anticipate the job will only be for a few days...a week at the most. If we can't get a regular Jedi Knight to do the job, how about a Padawan?" Obi-Wan suggested.

The council seemed to like the suggestion. "Deliberate on that suggestion, we will. May the Force be with you," Yoda promised. Obi-Wan bowed and left the chamber.

Back at Padme's apartment, Dorme was finished getting dressed in apparel similar to what Padme would wear as a senator. The hope was that the longer the illusion could be maintained, the better chance that Padme and Anakin could get to Naboo without being detected. Of course, since the assassins knew that she had Jedi as protectors, the illusion also depended on a Jedi being Dorme's guardian.

A communicator in Captain Typho's hand became active. "Yes, what is it?" he asked into the speaker. The response was that the Jedi was here, so Dorme stood up and waited. Typho went by the door and greeted the new arrival.

The Jedi Padawan was a human male, tall, with short, military style black hair. His name was Cyrus Lampkin and the Council had decided that this would be his trial. If he successfully passed this mission, he would be granted the title of Jedi Knight. "Greetings, my lady. My name is Cyrus Lampkin," he said, taking Dorme's hand and giving it a kiss. She blushed at this greeting.

"The greeting is appreciated, Cyrus, but I'm sure you know that I'm not the Senator," Dorme said wryly.

"I know. I have been fully briefed on the particulars. Now, if you'll excuse me I'll go check out the rest of the apartment," Cyrus said. He left the room and Captain Typho accompanied him. Cyrus turned to the security captain and asked, "What are the security arrangements?"

"Same as when the other Jedi were here. I have men stationed on every floor, so it's doubtful that any attempt will come from there," Captain Typho explained. Cyrus nodded as he checked every nook and cranny for any signs of trouble. But after a thorough search, none was found.

"Very...," Cyrus started to respond, but his danger senses alerted him to an imminent attack. "Something's wrong!" he ran back into the main room, igniting his lightsaber. What he found was a gas attack and Dorme was slipping into unconsciousness. Taking her, Cyrus ran for the door, while Captain Typho headed back into the bedroom to escape the effects of the gas. He then barked orders into his communicators.

A medical droid was on hand to help revive Dorme. It took a few minutes, but eventually she regained consciousness. She was laying down on the padded bench and was looking around, "Where's Cyrus?"

"I'm here," he said. "It was a gas attack. But whomever launched it is long gone. So, apparently they think that you're Senator Amidala."

"Thanks for saving my life. I know you just did your job, but here's a reward," she said, standing up to him. She turned her face up and kissed him on the lips. Taken aback, Cyrus then returned the strong and forceful kiss and brought her closer to him. They continued to kiss for a minute or so, before Cyrus broke away.

"This is wrong...I can't do this," he said and walked away. This left Dorme in tears at his sudden rejection and sat down and began to cry.
