Chapter I
He, General Aid’ian, was the youngest appointed to such post of honor. His army and the Elders respected him so much that there were no objections to the decision. Even the Captian Ron’zen did not object and he was next in line for promotion. He had actually suggested that Aid’ian receive the post.
Aid’ian settled very well into his new position and things were going smoothly until today. Today would begin the most chaotic times of his life; Aid’ian would have to choose a mate.
At the sound of the door to his private sparring room opening, Aid’ian opened his eyes to see his Captain Ron’zen standing there. It had to be an emergency if Ron’zen was interrupting him while he was in mediation.
“There has been an incident involving Nola.”
Nola was the old Elder Loki’s daughter. She was a beautiful female and had the choice of any male she wanted and she knew it, and that was the problem. Elder Loki had many conversations with her about her behavior but she ignored them. Now no longer the leader of the clan, Nola felt she no longer had to listen to him. Meh’gah was now Elder; and asked Loki to stay on and act as his most trusted advisor. Elder Loki handled the lesser problems so Meh’gah’s burdens were few, unlike when he led the Ghrey clan.
Aid’ian grabbed his vest. There was no telling what Nola did this time.
“Who else was involved?”
The Captain grunted. “She chose to upset Santana this time.”
Aid’ian dressed quicker. The Captain smiled unknowingly to his General. He tended to move faster when Santana was involved in anything.
Santana was Healer She’bach’s daughter, and she was an Ooman.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Eighteen years earlier
She’bach was out on a scouting mission with some Hunters on the blue water planet. They had found a war on a dark continent to observe but not to engage the Oomans there. The loud explosions and smoke that filled the destroyed village only added to the horror that lay on the ground. Females and their children lay dead or dying. She’bach had never seen such causal recklessness in a species before.
He heard the sounds of pain over the exploding ammunition. She’bach turned his head to fix on the location and walked in that direction. He came to a damaged hut with a woman inside in childbirth. She screamed as the pains continued to ravage her bleeding body. She had internal bleeding and a broken arm, but she was determined to give her child life.
She’bach decided to help her and disengaged the cloaking device. If she had fear when she saw the masked alien he could not tell because the pain from the child took priority. She’bach quickly removed his helmet and took out his knife to cut away the material preventing the child safe passage. He spoke in her language and she responded and pushed with all she had left.
Explosions rattled the small hut and She’bach covered her body with his as some straw fell down onto them. He threw it aside and watched the female’s eyes roll back into her head. She was fading, but he commanded that she push again. The female used whatever strength was in her weakening body and pushed one last time and her child came from her body. She’bach cleaned the child’s mouth and nasal passages by sucking out the mucus and spitting it on the ground.Once it was removed the child gave a loud cry. She’bach used the beam from the shoulder cannon to heat his knife to cut the umbilical cord attached to the child.
“Sant …ana” Those were the only words the dying female spoke before she smiled at him and closed her eyes for the last time.
She’bach looked at the half bloody and clean crying female in his arms. She was the color of the brown soil that soaked up her mother’s blood. The little hands gripped onto one of his mandibles as the Hunters with him entered the hut seeing him inside through a scan of the structure.
He turned to face them with the infant in his arm. They disengaged their cloaking and walked inside.
The lead Hunter Meh’gah looked at the Healer with a question. “What will you do with it She’bach?”
There was no doubt in the Healer’s mind.
She’bach and his mate Janvee had lost their only daughter in childbirth four days prior. They had ten other offspring but they were all male and Janvee wanted a daughter. She was still heavy with milk and accepted the child without any prompting from She’bach. She was their daughter now; an Ooman taught to be a Yautja.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Present
Aid’ian saw the others that had come with the Captain once he stepped outside his quarters. They were constantly around She’bach’s daughter.
Cri was the oldest in the entire army and possibly the ship. He was her favorite because of all the information he knew about everything ever made. Pi’tre was slightly older than the General was but he had none of the seriousness of Aid’ian and found humor in everything.
“We need a security force.”
Ron’zen chuckled at his superior. “No they just wish to know what happened. She probably will not talk to you or me but to them she talks forever.”
Cri and Pi’tre nodded at the general. Aid’ian nodded back.
Santana could hear them behind her on the large viewing deck.
Aid’ian let his gaze slip over her body slowly. She always wore her thick black hair in a ponytail and let it hang down her back. Although she wore the same material as the other females, hers somehow always looked different. It hugged her curves and came to about mid thigh. He was happy Janvee changed the cut of the front of the smock and now it covered all of her breasts and tied at her shoulders. She’bach did not like the looks she was getting and had mentioned it to him during one of his regular exams of the clan. He of course assured the Healer any attempt to touch Santana would bring pain to that Yautja.
She turned with a look of guilt on her face. Cri smiled at her.
Aid’ian noticed scratches on her arm. “Who did those?”
Santana looked down at her right arm and then back up at Aid’ian with a smile. “I had her in a headlock and she couldn’t get free so her two friends had to drag me away.”
Pi’tre smiled at her quickly before anyone could see him.
“She has at least fifty pounds on you.”
Santana rolled her eyes. “So” Cri chuckled.
Aid’ian approached her. Santana looked down immediately in a show of respect for the General.
“You are to see the Elder Loki.”
Santana nodded. He could smell her scent from this distance. “Cri and Pi’tre will escort you there. Nola is already there waiting for you.”
Santana cursed under her breath.
“Your brothers have corrupted you with the Ooman transmissions they showed you.” Ron’zen said to her with a chuckle when he saw her smiling.
Cri and Pi’tre came forward and Santana walked over to them. Aid’ian wished she had looked up at him so he could look into those hazel and green eyes of hers. Ron’zen watched the General as she walked away with her two favorites in the entire army. She had helped She’bach mend many of their cuts and bruises.
“She has been Nola’s enemy ever since she has come of age.”
Aid’ian looked at his Captian. “There are many here for Nola to choose from why fear Santana.”
Ron’zen smiled. “She feels that the one she wants has desires on She’bach’s daughter.”
Aid’ian snorted and began walking towards Elder Loki’s room. “Whoever Nola has designs for I hope he has a strong mental base.”
The Captain chuckled. “I do believe you do.”
Aid’ian stopped walking and faced him. “What are you saying?”
“She wants you my General Aid’ian.”
