Chapter One: Strangers When We Meet

The padawan drew a sharp breath as she walked by, and tightened the shields around his thoughts; it would be embarrassing beyond belief to have a Jedi Master learn his secret fantasies involving her. He didn’t realize that he’d audibly done so until she turned to look him, asking if he were alright. He felt a flush of heat as his face turned several shades of crimson, and tried in vain to stammer out some sort of excuse before making the mistake of looking up.
Kayla Silar’rian bit her lip when she saw him approaching. Just the sight of him was enough to disturb her Jedi calm, and he was walking a path that would bring him directly towards her; she didn’t trust her control not to shatter completely. With effort, she willed herself not to look directly at him and continued walking. As he drew nearer, he drew a sudden intake of breath, as if there were a problem. Before she could stop herself, she turned her head towards him and asked what was wrong. Hoping he wouldn’t notice how flustered she was by his nearness, she listened as he said something that didn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense (but that could have just been her reaction to standing so close to him), and then her eyes flickered to his face just as he looked up.
Their eyes met. She felt an almost electric shudder run through her and settle somewhere south of her stomach. He seemed to be experiencing something similar. Shyness won out, however, and she managed to say something to the effect of “As you were,” before hurrying away. Damn it, damn it, damn it. One of these days, she was going to have to find the nerve to actually hold a conversation with him.
Obi-Wan Kenobi felt his heart miss a beat when she met his gaze. He wanted to say something, anything, but words fled him and instead he stood there silent and nearly trembling. The moment was lost almost immediately, however, as she broke off eye contact and moved along. He released the breath he realized he was still holding and sighed. Usually so quick with words, he had never been able to come up with something to say to her, much less something witty or clever. She must think him a fool. Besides, although she was not much older than him, she had already passed her trials and had been granted the title Jedi Master. She was one of the youngest Masters in the last century. He didn’t think she’d be interested in the least in a relationship with him. Still, he couldn’t keep from hoping otherwise.

Qui-Gon Jinn sighed and folded him arms, unsure how to begin. “Kayla, we need to talk.” He closed the door to her office and took a seat facing her.
She turned away from the datapad on her desk and looked sharply at him, an expression of worry and guilt flashing quickly across her features before being replaced by Jedi calm. “About what?”
He smiled wryly. “It’s more like ‘about whom?’ actually.” His force-enhanced senses registered that the emotions she was masking so well on the surface had just amped up several notches, and wondered at the cause. “It’s about my padawan.”
The calm façade cracked. “Oh, Force. Am I that obvious?”
“What are you talking about?”
She buried her reddening face in her hands. “I swear, Qui-Gon, I have done my utmost to sublimate and redirect my, um, interest…”
“Kayla, I think we are having two different conversations here.” He smiled. This might turn out to be an easier task than he had originally anticipated. “I was coming to see you to find out if Obi-Wan has been making a nuisance of himself. He's completely infatuated with you. Or hadn’t you noticed?” He grinned wider at the panoply of emotions passing over her face, from embarrassment to confusion, to shock and delight.
“You’re joking. Are you joking?” She glanced up at him.
He shook his head in the negative.
“You didn’t come here to give me grief for having an unreasonable crush on your padawan?” Her face was flushed again.
“Not in the slightest. Shall I tell him then that his affections are returned?”
“No!” She jumped out of her seat and began pacing the length of her office.
“Well, then, why don’t you tell him yourself?” He grinned widely and leaned back in the chair, eyes twinkling.
Her face turned from crimson to pale, and then she visibly forced calm upon herself. “Master Jinn, I do believe you are enjoying this far too much. Now, unless you have other things to discuss, I have to get back to work.” She reached for the datapad sitting atop her desk for effect, but it slipped from her hand, skidding across the floor. The calm somehow held as she force-floated it back to her grasp. Turning her back on the still-amused Jedi Master, she stalked to her desk and sat with her back to him. He was still smiling when he left the room.
An hour or so later…
The door was open; there was a soft knock on her office doorframe. “Master Jinn said you wanted to see me?” Kayla looked up to see Padawan Kenobi standing there. Extending a tendril of thought, she sensed his emotions under tense control. His face was perfectly composed. Good job, padawan, she thought with only a twinge of envy, her own composure something less than perfect.
“No, I didn’t, but come in anyway.” She moved a pile of reports from a chair to the floor so he could sit. “Master Jinn has a twisted sense of humor.” Take a deep breath, breathe in calmness and serenity…
Obi-Wan snickered. “That’s an understatement if ever I heard one.” He sat and managed, with great effort, to keep from looking at her directly. His efforts proved in vain, however, as she got up and walked around the office until she was facing him.
“Did he tell you that he came to see me this morning?” Kayla struggled but successfully maintained her calm exterior, while her stomach was performing acrobatics to make a Twi'lek green with envy. She made every effort to hide her interest, but she watched his every move and drank in the sight of him.
“Um, he mentioned something to that effect. He didn’t say why, though.” His discomfort was far more apparent now; he’d need a bit more training before he could maintain Jedi calmness under duress. Kayla suspected that he knew damned well why his Master had been here, but hadn’t learned the outcome of their meeting.
She sighed and chewed her lip, a nervous habit she thought she’d long since outgrown. “Ah well, it’s not important. But since you’re here, maybe you could help with filing some of these reports.” She gestured to the stack of datacards she'd been working on, smiled and forced herself to continue, “I’ll tell you what, you give me a hand here so I can get out of this office at a reasonable hour for a change, and we can go grab dinner and drinks at BlueStar when we’re done. On your Master’s tab, of course.” Turn about is fair play, after all.
“Really? I mean, yes, of course I'll help.” Their eyes met and Kayla felt her smile widen unconsciously into what she surmised probably looked like a silly grin. After a moment, she broke eye contact and handed him the cards. “You can start by sorting these reports in chronological order.”
