Chapter 1: Prologue
The rain felt like tiny needles piercing her sensitive skin. But she couldn’t think about anything right now except running. She had to get away from the group of men that were quickly gaining on her. She would have run home but it was to far away and she wouldn’t be able to keep this pace that long. Her dress was getting heavier by the second, the rain making it stick to her body. Her hem was at least six inches deep in mud already. But she didn’t care about anything else right now. She had to get her daughter to safety. She continued to run down the road and soon a luxurious mansion loomed ahead. She wanted to keep running to the town but her energy was draining quickly out of her. She ran up the wet path that led to a side door on the mansion. She didn’t care who answered, noble or not, she just had to keep her daughter away from harm. She eventually got to the door and slammed her fist against it. She soon realized the storm was probably drowning out her continuous knocking but she did not care. She looked over her shoulder and seen the men come into view. She turned back around and started to pound on the door even harder. Her daughter was squirming in her arms. She could feel how cold her daughter was through the blanket and held her even closer to her body. Finally the door slowly opened and an old maid peered through the small opening.
“Please, she has no where else to go. Please, I beg of you, keep her safe.” The young woman pleaded. The maid looked down at the bundle in her arms and immediately threw the door open and stepped to the side so she could walk into the house. The young woman just shook her head before looking over her shoulder nervously. The men were so close to her. She had to leave soon, yet she knew she could never get away. “I don’t have time. Please just keep her safe.” Tears were falling freely from her eyes as she handed her daughter over to the maid.
“I promise she will be safe in this house.” The maid reassured the young woman. The woman gave a hurried thanks and sprinted of along the side of the house. The maid looked out to the street and for the first time she noticed the men running after her. The woman ran around the front corner of the house with the men not even six seconds behind her. The baby stirred in her arms and started crying. The maid looked down to her and seen the piercing blue eyes that were covered in tears. As if she knew what her mothers fate was. The maid looked back out into the rain and let out a deep sigh. Her life is not one she would want any baby to follow. Her own tears started to fall from her eyes as a piercing scream rang out into the night. As soon as the baby heard it she stopped crying, stopped all movements and just stared at the old made with completely blank eyes.
“I promise to love you as my own. I only pray your mother’s troubles were not so great that the men would come here for you.” She whispered as she looked back out into the night. “But, I guess it will always be a mystery.” She shook her head and let a few more tears fall before slowly shutting the door, making sure it was locked tight before she walked into her own room and laid the mysterious baby on her large bed. She new the baby couldn’t sleep anywhere except in a crib so she quickly made her way to her madams storage room and grabbed the crib that was there. She put it back up in her room and put the baby in it. She had always wanted children but she never met a man who would take her. She gently stroked the baby’s soft cheek as her eyes fluttered close. She turned away from the crib and walked to her bed and lay down. Darkness came quickly, but before it did, the image of the strange woman came to her mind, as she took one last look at her child in a different woman’s arms, knowing she was never going to be able to see her again.
