Angry boots sounded across deck, causing his heartbeat to quicken, palms glazing over with a nervous sweat before the door swung open forcefully. The familiar figure was draped in darkness so that he had to squint to make out the stern look he already knew to be affixed upon the other's face. Faking a smile his hands fluttered about in the air, “Evening Jamie love.”
James' nostrils visibly flared, nudging the door closed with his boot before stepping into the candle light. “Jack, I've just been to Scarlett's.” His eyebrows tilted in angry confusion, “She sends her regards and asked me to give you this note.” A hand rifled through brocaded pockets, revealing a once sealed letter that he'd obviously took the liberty of reading.
Jack meekly reached out, taking the crumpled parchment in his hands and read. 'Jack, I've not seen you in months. I fear this new fling of yours to be dangerous. Come back to me and live in fear no more. -Scarlett' He closed his eyes upon reading it and crumpled the paper into a ball between his palms. Scarlett was in no way a stupid woman, but there were times she was so stupid Jack wanted to strangle her. Exhibit A: Giving a letter to James to give to him. Bad idea. “Ye' know I'd never do that, Jamie love.”
“And I made sure of it already.” A sinister smile plastered itself slowly across his face, giving way to his crime.
Jack knew immediately of what he'd done. “No, Jamie. Tell me my heads on wrong an' I'm not thinkin' right. Ye' couldn't have!”
“And why couldn't I? She was clearly after you and I will let nothing stand in our way, Jack.”
Sighing a tear away Jack looked to him with reddened eyes, “I s'pose ye'r right James.” One time he could faintly remember when James had been kind to him. Before he snapped. But that was all Jack's fault anyways.
James fretted about the kitchen, his apron slipping down to pool around his bare feet. Grumbling to himself he pulled it up, dishing up the food he'd prepared for the night. Their anniversary. It had been exactly one year since they'd been together and James went to every length to make it special. He could hear the familiar swaggering steps across the parlor floor and right up to the kitchen door.
“Evening love.” The golden smile sent a shiver down James' spine, almost causing him to drop the lovely turkey he'd made.
“Evening Jack. I've made your favorite.”
“Oi! Turkey an' potatoes?!”
“Yes, love.”
The pirate pounced on top of the Admiral, “I knew I loved ye' fe'r more than ye'r legs!”
James blushed, “I wish you wouldn't talk like that Jack.”
Sticking a tongue out, he sat himself at the table, awaiting James' company to begin eating.
Glances were shared across the table with the occasional brief dabble in a game of footsie before the plates were emptied and placed in the washing basin. Jack splayed himself out across the couch, belt undone and breeches untied, attempting to breathe after the heavy meal. James' stockinged feet pitter patted across the wooden floor, to sit at Jack's side.
“I've got a game, Jack.”
An eyebrow quirked before the pirate rested himself upon his elbows, “An' wot's that, love?”
“No games a game without a few drinks.” Reaching under the couch he pulled out a bottle of rum.
“Tha's got t'be the biggest bottle o' rum I've ever seen!”
“Thats why I bought it for you, Jackson.” Uncorking it, he handed it to Jack watching him revel in it's taste before sitting upright.
“Now, wot game are ye' referrin to, Jamie?”
Pulling out the board and pieces he smirked, “The same game we played on this very night a year ago.”
“Aye! If'n I got checkmate ye' had t'come home with me.”
“I've never been able to beat you, Jack. But tonight, I do think I'll try.”
Jack laughed and leaned over, grasping the back of James' head, “I love you, Jamie Norrington.” Leaning in he placed a kiss upon unchapped lips.
“Jack...”
“Jack.”
Blinking a few times he pulled himself from the past, hoping it was still reality. “Aye, Jamie?”
“Time for bed.”
Darkness surrounded him as the lights were blown out. “Aye. I suppose ye'r right.” A solemn tear brushed down his cheek as he curled up next to James.
