NEW HORIZONS
Jack Sparrow had pillaged many a shiny in his day. Hell, he’d pretty much gotten anything he ever really wanted: short of her of course. She was a challenge. She even killed him and lived to tell about it. Now his time was really running out. In two days he would be dropping her off in Port Royal with Will, he would have rather stayed dead had he had an option. He had to figure out something, and quick or he’d be the one cutting out his heart and burying it in the sand.
Look at the two of them. Bloody, stupid, Will. Makes me sick, stupid eunuch touching her. Who taught that boy to kiss? Bugger…. I cant even enjoy the sunset with them standing there doing THAT…. stop THAT already. Wish that monkey was still around to shoot at. Where’s me rum?
Jack couldn’t take the two of them anymore, so he handed the wheel off to Gibbs and walked into his cabin with the look of sheer disgust on his face. He sat down at his desk and threw back a long hard swig of rum before starting doodle on a map he was working on. The more he drank the more his lines turned into womanly curves, and sure enough as he’d finish the bottle their would be Lizzie. He fell asleep face-to-face with the one that got away, or the one that was going to get away. He woke up some hours later, realized what he’d drawn and walked out on deck with it. He headed for the bow of the ship to light it ablaze and throw it overboard, just like he had every day since she told him she was leaving.
Jack Sparrow doesn’t fall in lo… No, don’t even think it. Not good. Two days, two days. What is it about this lass? Eh, what’s it matter? She’s happy with that bloody whelp. I have me Pearl.
As always Jack was immersed in thought when he stood staring out at the sea. He hardly noticed who was on night watch let alone lurking in the shadows behind him. He unrolled the parchment, smiled at it and took the candle he was holding and ignited the parchment. As he watched it burn, he couldn’t help but frown. “Goodbye, Lizzie.” As he watched the last bit of parchment burn and fall into the sea, he didn’t hear her walk up behind him.
She couldn’t sleep. In fact it was one of the many nights she hadn’t been able to. It seemed the closer she got to Port Royal the more she wished she wasn’t going back. She’d seen him get to the bow just before she, and heard him muttering something to himself. She stayed back in the shadows, not really wanting to talk to him now. Then she saw it. Was that a picture of her she was burning? She wasn’t sure until she heard him, ‘goodbye Lizzie’ the words burned her ears. Could he want her to stick around? She boldly walked behind him.
oh bugger now I can smell her. Wait a minu…don’t move maybe she’ll leave. Who am I kidding? Excuse, Jack come up with an excuse. Maybe she didn’t see it. Couldn’t have heard me…I hope…a lot.
He didn’t have a chance to turn around. “Jack, what brings you out here so late, hmm?”
oh yea, she heard. Be obnoxious, your good at that.
“Its me ship.” Grinning widely, “shouldn’t you be answering that question to me as it were?”
“Well then. I was taking a walk, since I was having trouble sleeping.”
“Eunuch’s will do that to ye.” that may have been too obnoxious he watched as her face turned red and her hand came up and slapped him. “Damn woman, I didn’t deserve that!” he spat.
“Jack, Will is not a…” she couldn’t even bring herself to mention it again, because to be honest, she didn’t even want to think about Will anymore. All she had been thinking about was how she had just fought with him when she told him that she wasn’t leaving the Pearl. Of course she now needed to talk to Jack, as it was his ship. So she didn’t walk off.
“Ah see you can’t even say it! HA I was right.” He smiled confidently. She couldn’t help but laugh at him. But she wanted to know about that picture.
“Jack” her eyes turned deadly serious. He clutched his cheek fearing the worst. “What were you burning?”
Bugger “uh, that was a drawing. A rather poor one at that. Nothing very special. Really poor it was. Found it while I was cleaning me cabin.” cleaning me cabin?? What am I babbling about now?
“You know I’d almost believe you?”
“Almost?”
“Yea, almost.” She wasn’t backing down. “Yea, I believe it was a drawing, slightly sloppy from what I saw, but the special part is where it gets tricky.” He tried backing himself up away from her but she gave chase matching all of his movements.
Not good. “And why is that again luv?”
“Jack, give it up. I know the drawing was of me and I heard your ‘goodbye Lizzie.’ What is this all about?”
Damn this lass. Can’t lie to her. Ill dance around it a bit more and maybe she’ll forget “Lizzie, you caught me. I was drawing a goodbye picture for you and I wasn’t very happy with it so I decided to burn it.”
“Is that so.”
“Yes?” he sounded rather questioning more than affirming and his face gave it away. She decided to play a different card.
“Jack, what if I told you I was thinking about staying aboard the Pearl?”
“Would the wh… Will be staying too?” He was proud he corrected himself before she swung at him again.
“Lets pretend Will doesn’t exist.” Did she just say that? I can arrange that.
“I’d say welcome aboard the Black Pearl Lizzie, and then I’d lead you to me cabin.”
“JACK!” she snapped at him, but couldn’t hide the grin it left on her face.
“So Lizzie doesn’t want to go back to being the Governors Daughter, eh or is it being the blacksmith’s wife that’s got you thinking?” He raised an inquisitive eyebrow as he spoke.
“I’ll answer that if you tell me the truth about the picture,” smiling wickedly at him, “Do we have an accord Captain Sparrow?” She extended her hand.
He placed a contemplative hand to his chin and looked deep into her eyes. Damn that girl! Turning into a damn good pirate. I want to hear this so ill agree. “Fine, but we discuss it in me cabin and that’s where it stays.” He shook her hand as she nodded and started walking off.
They settled themselves at the desk as Lizzie spoke. “You first.”
He took a swig of rum from his new bottle and kicked his feet up on the desk. “The picture was of you. I drew it. Burned it cause you’re leaving the Pearl. Truth be told I like having you around, savvy?”
“Jack, I never knew. All this time you’ve been throwing around hints you’ve actually meant them.” Her eyes softened towards him.
“Aye. I’m not always a ruthless, cut throat, scallywag.”
“You’re a good man, Jack.”
“So you’ve said. Just not as good as dear William.” And he downed more rum.
“Don’t compare yourself to Will.”
“Now, your turn lass.”
“I don’t want to return to Port Royal.”
“Ill change direction right now!” he shouted in excitement.
“We need to drop Will off.” Her eyes suddenly saddened.
“Will’s leaving?” he tried to mask his glee with surprise.
“Aye. I cant sleep because I had yet another fight with Will. He wants to go back to being a blacksmith and live the life we once had. I don’t want to go back, I want freedom.” She was practically in tears.
“The Pearl can give you that luv. I can give you that.” He reached out for her hand, but she pulled it away.
“He thinks it’s the rum talking and doesn’t believe that I really want to stay. I don’t want to marry him Jack. I don’t.” Her sobs took over as he sat there shocked at the site he was seeing. did she really. This better not be another bloody dream. Ouch. It’s not a dream, that hurt and ohh look blood. I pinch hard. Don’t marry him Lizzie! Stay with me! No that’s not going to work. Lil Jack tone it down over there, I’m thinking. Rum.
“Lizzie, if you don’t want to leave you are welcome to stay. As for Will, I will maintain course. If he chooses to leave, he leaves.” He walked to her side of the table and rubbed her back a little. He had to do something the crying was starting to get to him.
“Thank you, Jack.” She managed to squeak; “I’m going to break it off with Will tomorrow.”
“I’ll be here, Lizzie. If you need me that is.”
She got up from her chair, hugged him lightly and left the cabin.
Well isn’t this bloody fantastic! She’s going to leave the Eunuch. With that thought in mind he chugged the rest of his rum and collapsed on his bed, empty bottle in hand.
