You don’t get to leave, do you hear me! I mean it Clark if you walk out
that door I’ll make you regret it.

“Shush you’re safe love, I’ve got you. No one will hurt you now, I won’t
let them.”

Shivering as a new onslaught of memories once again tried to drown him, Clark
clung to the arms around him, knowing that nothing, not the feeling of Bruce’s
protective arms, or the soft whisper of his words would make this right, there
was nothing on this earth that could ever again protect him from the betrayal of
his ex lover.

He could still feel them, their hands all over him, leaving him bleeding on
the floor, their laughter and jeers filling him up before they left him there.
Broken.

He knew this was his fault, no matter what Bruce said this was his mistake,
and now he had to live with the pain, with this humiliation. Trembling violently
he squeezed his eyes shut as the arms around him tightened.

It had started with an anonymous call, an emergency somewhere off the coast,
details were sketchy but one thing was clear, there were people in trouble and
they were begging for Superman to save them.

He hadn’t realized that call would change the rest of his live.

Bruce had told him to wait for him, had said something wasn’t right about
the call and that he’d be there in ten minutes. But he hadn’t listened, how
could he? Lives hung in the balance, time was running out and by the time Bruce
was set to arrive, people could have been dead, so he did what he always did, he
ignored his lover's warning and had gone to help.

He could still remember the flash of lightening that had streaked across the
sky illuminating everything in its path. The thunder had rumbled in his ears
dark and menacingly, like an echo of things to come, and yet he hadn’t
noticed, not until it was too late. Not until Lex’s voice had echoed across
the derelict, frozen piece of rock that looked so reminiscent of his fortress in
the Antarctic.

Welcome home Superman, I’ve been expecting you.

The feeling of sweat trickling down his scalp had been foreign and alarming,
he had had a moment to wonder why he was sweating and where the land had come
from, before Lex’s fist was smashing into his face, sending him rolling down
the jagged stair like formation.

Tell me Superman, didn’t your dad ever tell you to look, before, you, leap.

He could still remember the growl as Lex’s had stared down at him, his eyes
as hard and as alien as the expanse of land that surrounded them.

So busy staring at his blood in fascination, trying to understand why he was
gasping for air he didn’t notice the men behind him until they grabbed him.

You took away five years of my life Superman. I’m just returning the favour.

Lex had turned then, leaving him alone, with them.

He didn’t remember much past the moment they began to tear at his uniform,
everything had been reduced to a blur of senses, like the smell of frozen earth
that had assaulted his nose as they pinned him to the ground. The feel of cold
air that had cooled his tears, the deadness in the centre of his being as their
hands dug into his flesh, and lastly the excruciating pain both inside and out
as they entered him again and again and again.

When they finally finished he remember all of them laughing, jeering as they
zipped up, kicked him. Taunted him about being not so super now, and then Lex
had returned, his expression flashing pain for just the brief second, before
anger replaced it once again.

Kneeling on the ice, now wet with his blood, Lex had smiled slightly, his
lips a breath away from Clark’s ear. Lifting him gently he had removed
something from his pocket before shoving it into Clark’s back.

Like I said Clark you don’t get to leave. You should have never left me.

Lex’s whispered words were like the shard of kryptonite embedded in his
back.

“Now Fly Superman. Why don’t you leave now?”

Broken he had stood, his naked body shivering from the wind. He had tried to
apologize, tried to reach out, to explain that he hadn’t understood, that he
couldn’t have stayed, that they would have destroyed each other. But all he
managed was another gasp as he staggered backward, and then he had let go and
allowed himself to fall.

It was at some point after that, that Bruce had found him; naked, bruised,
and fighting for air. He couldn’t remember much after that, just words of
regret, promises of love, and then warmth.

That had been a month ago, today.

One month of pain, hatred and fights, of nightmares, tears and self-hatred;
of hiding from Metropolis, Lex, Lois, the Daily Planet, his mother, the League
and the suit.

A whole month of deciding what he wanted to do with his life, of determining
he wasn’t ready to leave yet, and that he probably would never be.

Sighing softly as he gently laced his fingers into Bruce’s, he let the
meaningless string of words wash over him. As his eyes eventually begin to get
heavy once again, he could only pray that Bruce would have it in him to be able
to heal his heart and soul the way he had his body.
