The Cupcake and the Lady

Chapter One
The Reason

Herbert West. Once a scientist who dreamed of curing death. A completely devoted individual who took risks and had hardly any emotion. The only emotion he had in his body was the excitment he gained while finding out ways to take the re-agent to new levels. Now, the dreams and excitment that once ingulfed him are now only existant in his memory. Not a yearning to use it. Not a single urge.
The death of a little girl is all it took. Herbert had tried to re-animate hudreds of people, all with no avail. But it was this beautiful child of six that blew his flame out. He had tried his damndest to save her. He tried and tried. When his medical genuis failed, he took out the small, glowing, green, bottle of wonder. He took a good long look at the small, helpless body that lay in front of him. He stared blankly for a moment and a moment is all it took. Herbert let his grip of the vile go and it shattered all over the floor. He still stood, now in a dead trance. He knew that the re-agent would never work. He had to stop himself from killing clueless monster. Zombie or whatever she would have turned into, he didn't have the heart to kill her again. No matter what she became. He knew that his work was over. Then and there and for the first time in a very long time, Herbert West cried.
Weeks went on by and not a single experiment. No cadaver searching and not a single mention of it to Daniel. Dan had caught on. He knew how the girl's death affected Herbert. He wasn't sure why because Herbert had witnessed a lot of deaths. Never of a child though. He definaltly knew that it went and triggered something deep in the walls of Herbert's mind . Dan decieded that he wouldn't mention anything about it to Herbert and that he would discuss it when the time was right. It is just not something Herbert West would forget.
And he didn't mention it. Not for a very long time. A year passed, just one to be exact. Not a word about any re-animation of any kind. Not a trace of any "secret" experiments Dan hoped to find in the basement to be sure that Herbert was still Herbert. The only thing Dan discovered was, on occasion, Herbert sitting in the basement. Just sitting on the steps, head resting on his hand, staring. Staring blankly at the lab table.
Then he went upstairs.
Herbert wasn't Herbert anymore.
