Chapter 1
Dark Agent
Chapter 1
Mara Jade, former Emperor’s Hand, current Master Trader and Jedi, stood in a mixture of shock and fear. Her lightsaber still held limply in her hand as she looked at the spot where her best friend and sparring partner had just been. She had agreed to meet Luke Skywalker for a sparring session.
“What the hell just happened?” she wondered out loud.
She came out of her revere, grabbed her gym bag and hurried from the gym. She headed straight to her apartment on Corusant. As she kept trying to piece together what happened, she knew one thing. She had to find Luke and fast.
************************************************************************
Luke stood on his balcony, his knuckles white as he clutched the railing. He was staring at the hustle and bustle of the city, but not seeing it. He hadn’t even noticed that full night had covered the city. His mind was replaying what had happened six hours earlier at the gym.
*6 Hours Earlier*
Luke entered the gym and found Mara already there meditating. Without a word, he removed his black tunic and dropped his bag next to hers. He pulled out his lightsaber, did a few stretching exercises before beginning to meditate himself.
“About time you got here Skywalker.” Mara teased.
“Sorry. Leia detained me.” Luke smiled sheepishly.
“Sure, blame it on your sister. Come on Farmboy, let’s get this over with.” she chuckled.
Luke nodded. Instantly, they engaged their lightsabers and the duel began. As their sabers clashed in sparks of blue and green, Luke would continually give her pointers to help improve her technique.
“Come on Farmboy. You’re holding back on me. It was you who wanted to spar.” she taunted.
Mara’s eyes widened slightly when she saw something dark flicker in his normally clear and good natured blue eyes. She barley had time to block his saber as it came down toward her head. She parried his powerful blows, but something felt wrong.
*Luke! What the hell are you doing!*
She felt nothing but a cold void. This wasn’t the Luke Skywalker she knew. Mara grunted as he delivered as sharp kick to her midsection, dropping her to the mats. The look in his eyes terrified her.
“Luke! Stop please!” she pleaded as she turned off her saber and began backing away. *Luke, please stop.* she begged through their bond.
“Mar…Mara?” Luke gasped as his eyes cleared. His voice sounded as if her were coming out of a trance or something.
“Luke, what the hell just happened?” she asked, unable to hide her fear.
“I…I…oh no. What have I done?” he whispered.
“Luke!” Mara cried as he spun on his heel and bolted from the room, grabbing his things as he did.
*Present time*
‘What did I do? I could have Killed Mara! Thank the Force she was able to get through to me.’ Luke mentally yelled at himself.
He left the balcony and re-entered his apartment. He dropped onto his sofa and buried his head in his hands. Ever since he left the gym, he had been shielding himself from ever other Force sensitive being. He had been so focused on shielding himself, he failed to sense the person who had just entered his apartment.
He jumped to his feet, his heart pounding in his throat when he felt a gentle hand stroke his hair. His blue eyes met the worried emerald eyes of Mara. The two just stared at each other. Finally, Luke broke the silence, while feeling his emotions beginning to swirl within him.
“What are you doing here Jade?” he asked, turning away from her.
“I’ve been looking everywhere for you. I was worried about you. I tried to reach you, but you were shutting me out.” she answered.
“Maybe you should have taken the hint. I’m fine.” he replied, his voice straining as he tried to keep it controlled.
“No you’re not. Talk to me. You’ve always been able to talk to me.” she said, her temper flaring slightly at him keeping her out.
“There’s nothing to talk about!” he snapped.
“Yes there is. You can’t deny it. Tell me what happened earlier. What’s wrong?” she insisted.
Luke spun around and grabbed her upper arms. His eyes holding the same look they did at the gym. “Why are you always butting your nose in where it isn’t wanted! Why can’t you let it go and mind your own business!” he cried angrily.
“Because you’re my best friend damnit! I’m worried about you!” she yelled.
Their eyes met in a clash of blue and green. Mara could feel that something had happened to him, but didn’t know what. The uncontrolled rage flashing in his eyes scared her. She let out a startled shriek as he shoved her roughly. She groaned as he back hit the wall and she slid to the floor.
“Get out Mara. Get out now before I hurt you.” he pleaded, his eyes clearing slightly.
“Let me help you Luke.” she begged.
“Please Mara. I don’t want to hurt you. Go now, while I still have control.” he hissed.
Mara saw he was shaking. His fist clutched at his side and his eyes shut tight. Sweat was beginning to pour off his face as he struggled to remain in control of his own body.
“Luke, please let me…”
“GO MARA! GO NOW!” he roared as his eyes flew open.
One look in his eyes and Mara didn’t need to be told again. She realized she wasn’t looking into the eyes of her best friend anymore. She struggled to her feet and ran for the door. Without looking back, she bolted from the apartment. Behind her she could hear the sound of something breaking against the now closed door. She quickly jumped into the nearest turbo lift. All Mara wanted at that moment was to put as much distance between her and Luke as she possibly could.
