Chapter One: The Spark I’ve Been Looking For
***

The first day of Senior Year came entirely to fast for Troy Bolton and his friends. It seemed the events that had gone one during the summer had caused it to fly by. When Troy’s alarm clock radio went off that morning he groaned.

“Why?” He said to himself, “Just one more week!”

“Troy honey,” his mother said walking by the door. “Time to get up!”

Troy groaned once again as he got up from his king sized bed and headed to his bathroom. He pulled his boxers off and tossed them to the side. The glass door of his one box shaped shower flew open and the hot water exited the pipes. Troy stepped his naked body into the waterfall of heat and sighed. After about fifteen minutes of pulsing hot water covering Troy’s body, he shut the water off and got out. The blue towel next to him served as his body dryer for the morning. Soon he was dressed and ready for breakfast.

“Good morning son,” Mr. Coach Bolton said as Troy sat down at the oak wood dining table.

“Hey Dad,” Troy said as he began into his eggs and bacon.

“Ready for school to start?” Coach Bolton asked.

“I guess,” Troy said as he continued eating. “I guess there’s no stopping it.”

“True,” his father said. “Well I have to get going. I’ll see you there.”

“Okay,” Troy said as he ate. It was always weird to him that his father worked at his school but never drove him. I guess he left too early and Troy was never ready. The bus worked fine anyways. Soon enough Troy was on that bus and headed to East High to start his last year of schooling there.

He got off the bus and walked into the school. He was greeted by almost everyone he passed. That was a usual thing for him. He just passed his casual yet fake smile at everyone and headed to his class. He sat down in front of his best friend Chad. They always had homeroom together.

“Hey man,” Chad said.

“What’s up?” Troy said. This seemed to be the same conversation they had every time they ever spoke. Troy was ready for something new to happen to him this year. The same old school stuff was not going to cut it.

It was at lunch that Troy could not take it anymore. His daily routine at school had a lack of difference from his junior year. He grabbed his lunch and headed up to the roof green house to think. On the same empty bench is where he sat. Just like he always did when he went up there.

His mind floated back to the day he first took Gabriella, his girlfriend up there. He hadn’t seen much of her that day. She was busy setting up the Scholastic Decathlon with Taylor. Troy set his lunch to the side and sighed.

“This is so lame,” he said to himself. He was sure no one could here him. “So lame that I’m talking to myself in order to pass the time. School is not hard, not fun, so boring. Now I’m rambling. God! I can’t even speak to myself correctly. Where’s Gabriella anyways? How can I not find my own girlfriend at school? Well, I guess it is a big school. Bigger than most in fact.”

“One of the biggest actually,” Troy looked up not realizing someone had walked up the stairs. It was Ryan Evans. “I heard you talking to yourself from down stairs. So I thought I’d come see who was up here. Guess it was you after all.”

“Oh hey Ryan,” he said. “What’s up?”

“I just told you,” Ryan said.

“Sorry,” Troy frowned. “I get lost in my own world sometimes. Boredom does that to me often.”

“At least you don’t have a sister nagging at you to do whatever all the time,” Ryan said sitting down next to Troy.

“I suppose it would be intense having her around,” Troy said. “But at least it makes life more interesting. My life is so boring.”

“I heard,” Ryan laughed.

“Ryan?” Troy said, “Can I ask you a question?”

“Sure,” Ryan said with a confused. What possible question could Troy Bolton have to ask him.

“Why do you wear those type of clothes?” Troy asked. “I mean like, a button up shirt and pants that are clearly restraining your goods, and your hats? That’s all you ever wear to school.”

“Oh,” Ryan said. “I don’t know. Sharpay always told me what to buy. This is just what they turn out to be.”

“She picks your clothes out too?” Troy rolled his eyes, “Do you do anything for yourself?”

“I use the bathroom without her,” Ryan laughed.

“Does she tell you when you are allowed to go?” Troy gave a cheesy grin.

“No,” Ryan stuck his tongue out. “Why does it matter how I dress anyways?”

“It doesn’t,” Troy said. “It’s just that. That people think you’re gay.”

“Do they?” Ryan looked at amazement. “Well at least they have some brains.”

“What?” Troy asked, “You’re actually gay?”

“Yes,” Ryan said. “Don’t act so surprised. I know you suspected it.”

“I guess I just didn’t expect you to tell me like that,” Troy said.

“Eh,” Ryan said. “It’s not something I need to lie about.”

“You know Ryan,” Troy said. “I respect that. But you should try and buy clothes for yourself. Clothes that look more normal.”

“I really don’t know what to buy,” Ryan said.

“Fine,” Troy said. “I guess I will have to help you shop.”

“Why?” Ryan said, “Wouldn’t it be weird for you to hang out with the presumable gay kid who is actually gay?”

“Yes,” Troy said.

Troy turned to Ryan and put his arms on either side of Ryan’s legs on the bench. He leaned forward, his face nearly touching Ryan’s.

“But,” he continued. “I need something new! Be that something.”

“O… Okay,” Ryan said, his eyes wide.

Troy smirked and raised his eyebrows quickly and lowered them.

“Good,” Troy said. “Meet me after school.”

“Su… Sure thing,” Ryan said nervously.

Troy got up and headed down to the upper floor of the school to go to class. Ryan blinked. Many times.

Troy waited outside by the statue in front of the school once the day was finally finished. The day had gone faster once Troy had talked to Ryan. Troy stood casually as all of his friends and “friends” passed by saying goodbye to him. Ryan hurried out the doors trying to avoid Sharpay. He headed to Troy.

“Ryan,” a familiar yell stopped him. Troy walked up to Ryan who turned around to see Sharpay following after him.

“Ryan,” she said. “Where are you going?”

“To hang with me,” Troy said throwing his arm around Ryan. “We are just going to hang out for a few hours. Is that okay with you?”

“No,” Sharpay said. “I need him to walk my dog!”

“Sharpay,” Troy said. “Ryan is your twin brother, not your housekeeper. Put one something besides heels and walk your dog yourself.”

“Excuse me?” Sharpay threw her hand onto her hip. “I will do no such thing!”

“Well,” Troy said. “Then hire a real housekeeper to do all your work for you. Ryan would rather live his own life and hang out with his friends.”

Sharpay glared at Troy. He glared back. She pouted as she stomped away from the two.

“Thanks,” Ryan said. “You stood up for me.”

“Something you’ll have to learn to do yourself,” Troy smiled. “But you can pay me back later.”

“Pay you back what?” Ryan asked.

“Later,” Troy said. “Let’s get you into style.”

At the store Troy made Ryan try on anything he would wear. Ryan was sporting outfits that Troy would wear in a heartbeat. Ryan was changing into the last outfit Troy had for him.

“You sure you wouldn’t rather be hanging out with your girlfriend?” Ryan asked, “I don’t want to be the reason you don’t see her.”

“Trust me,” Troy said. “You do want this to be the reason.”

Ryan walked out of the dressing room. He was wearing a regular white t-shirt and a pair of blue and white plaid shorts.

“Now that is a good look,” Troy said.

“You think?” Ryan grinned, “They are so much more comfortable.”

“There is only one problem,” Troy said getting up and walking to Ryan.

“What’s that?” Ryan asked.

“You are wearing your shorts too high,” Troy pulled them down. They were now hanging off his behind, much lower than he would ever wear them.

“T-Troy,” Ryan said.

“What?” Troy looked up and made eye contact with Ryan. “They are much sexier down here than they are up your ass.”

Ryan’s eyes widened. Troy pushed him back into the dressing room and pulled the door shut. Ryan was pinned to the wall by Troy’s strong arms and his body. Troy smiled.

“You keep looking like this,” Troy said. “And I may not be able to resist you.”

Troy then planted his lips onto Ryan’s. His kiss was pushy but soft. Troy kept his lips on Ryan’s for minutes. Troy moved in a little more. He opened his mouth and pushed his tongue into Ryan’s once sealed lips. His hand ran up Ryan’s back over the t-shirt. Ryan lost himself as Troy kissed him.

This kiss was soon broken. Troy and Ryan were both breathing heavily.
