Chapter 1
My name is Umani, and I’m a member of a dying breed called the Gy-gen.
This is my story:
Many years ago, my mother had explained to me how one day, I would have to make the shift between species, as she had done before my birth, and many times before that.
I shuttered at the very thought of it . . . At the thought of my body's bones being bent out of shape and twisted around to fit whatever pattern the new DNA ordered it to follow. My mother had told me how the pain would be beyond any nightmare I could possibly imagine. She told me this so that I would be prepared . . . But instead; I was scared out of my damned mind.
Lucky as my species was, this was not a choice, it was the only way for us to survive and to reproduce. Every 68 years or so, the shape shift had to happen, or else, our bodies would begin to self-destruct. In a matter of days, vital organs would start to shut down, skin and hair began to age and then . . . death.
Another problem with our kind as I mentioned earlier was the reproduction factor. Only once per new life cycle was it possible. And to make things even easier, we were only female . . . Yup that's right! So whenever we shape shifted, we needed to be sure that the breed we were shape shifting into had a female gender. Our only luck was that we could shape shift many times in and out of the same two species. Every time, we had to adjust to a new body, a new way of eating, breathing, sleeping, having sex . . . And even taking a dump was new all over again!
FUN ?
NO.
In my case, my mother was killed defending herself against an assailant who had the intention of raping her. BIG MISTAKE on his part. Our kind is a lot stronger than any human, so he got the fight and fright of his life when he realized he was no match for her. Unfortunately, they were struggling on an overpass above the highway at the time. He had tried to get her to climb in his car and one bad move sent them both flying over the edge . . . A truck was passing by at that same moment and they were both killed instantly.
My mother had told me to listen to my instinct and keep my eyes peeled for anything out of the ordinary around the year 2008, in June or July . . . She said that I should be on the lookout for a species called the Yautja. A humanoid race of hunters who lived much of their lives around the hunt and its codes’ of honor. Being that my mother had been one of their kind before, she knew they were scheduled to come to earth around that time.
I was nearing my 67 th birthday and I knew I didn't have much time before I had to shape shift, and hopefully, bring a new member of my kind into the universe.
Now I know you must all be thinking, EEW! 67! GROSS! But no, another particularity of my kind is looking young until the next shape shift, unless of course . . . we don't make it to the next shape shift . . .
I remember being at home watching an episode of the Simpsons’ when it happened. The news previews stated something about eye witnesses seeing something fly over Los Angeles. And shortly after, unexplained murders, all disturbingly gruesome . . .
I knew that was my cue.
I shot up straight like something was about to bite my ass and got dressed as fast as I could, yelling out curses as I struggled to get my thick hips into my jeans (like these fuckers couldn't make jeans for people with assess of course), and then cursing again as my ass-length hair got stuck in the zipper (AGAIN). I drew my hair back to make a braid, zipped my hoodie and I was out the door like a bat out of hell.
Trying to park my car on the crowded street (THAT WAS FUN) near the last murder location I was thinking of what I was possibly going to say to these guys, if I was lucky enough to find one of them.
"Hi, I'm Umani, I'm not human even though I really look and smell like one. I was wondering if I could hang out with you guys for a few decades, you know, maybe become one of you and have a baby! You wouldn't mind would you?"
Now at this, I was laughing my ass off as I was getting out of my car, still wondering were the hell I was going to begin....
As my kind has a sixth sense so to speak, I stayed still for a moment trying to get a feel of the warm night air. Sounds and smells blended together to form a thick haze of mixed emotions and thoughts in my mind as I strained to find . . . something . . . something out of the ordinary.
Something told me that this was my lucky day!
All at once, my attention shifted to scents and sounds coming from a few blocks down. My heart began to pound in my chest as I thought I might actually be on to something. Almost wishing I wasn't on to something, I started running.
I ran as fast as my muscular legs could take me before stopping infront of a tall museum-looking building.A frightened scream ripped through the night , making me wonder if I should go on.
Swallowing hard, I gathered my courage and landed a good hard kick in the side door of the building, causing bits and pieces of metal to fly apart from the impact. Struggling could be heard directly above as I heard a man let out a panicked, "WHAT THE FUCK?!". A gun shot went off, followed by a gruesome cry of agony; after that, dead silence . . .
I ran for the stair case on the left as it obviously leaded to the floor above. Nothing in the world could have explained what WASN'T stopping me from running up those stairs. My mother had made it clear to me. I HAD NO CHOICE. I had to do this, not only for me,but for my entire race as well. My teeth tightly clenched together as I reached the top of the stairs. Once I got there , I came face to flesh with the hanging corps of presumably, the man I had just heard screaming.
Tied by his ankles, he was hanging upside down, his body skinned and still freshly bleeding. After a moment, I started to breathe again, not realizing I had stopped. Before I knew it, a figure moved a few feet away. It was huge and was clearly camouflaged in some kind of cloaking device. Flashes of Star Trek the next generation came to mind.
It seemed to look at me and then started to move away, when all of sudden I shouted "WAIT, I NEED TO SEE YOUR LEADER!"
Hell, even I don't know where that came from as the little voice in my head went; "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MIND?" To both my surprise and dismay, the huge entity stopped and started walking toward me. My mind screamed "RUN, GET OUT NOW!" but my legs, in fact my hole body just didn't move an inch as the 8-foot Alien walked up to me and wrapped its hand around my neck to lift me clear of the ground. I held onto his forearms as tightly as I could, trying desperately to keep some of my weight from hanging by my neck only.
At this point, I knew I had his attention. He brought his face close to mine, cause I could feel the heat of his breath coming to my face as I dangled there. I felt like he was studying me, wondering why I had said what I said . . . I wondered if he could see that I was different . . . At those thoughts, he dropped me like a bag of bricks.
I staggered back to my feet and he seemed to walk away.
"Ok, this is going to be harder than I thought . . . ", Came to mind as I started following him.
After a dozen steps, he turned around swiftly and growled at me. I stood still for a few seconds and as he started to walk off again, I started following him once more. At this, he roared obviously annoyed and started running at me.
"Ok, now I'm in deep shit!" I thought as I ducked just in time to avoid his blow.
Thank God my eye sight was sharp enough to see the outlines of his cloak, cause that one would have taken my head right off!
As he swung around confused as to why he missed me, I yelled at him again, "I NEED TO SEE YOUR LEADER!".
He stood there for few seconds looking at me with confusion.
"This Ooman female is crazy!" Nem-Tak thought to himself as he looked at her and lunged at her again, determined to get her off his back.
Now I knew he was really pissed cause he growled as he lunged at me and tried to grab me. I moved to the side with lightening speed to avoid his grip. He roared and grunted furiously as he spun around looking to where I could be.
"YOU ARE PISSING ME OFF OOMAN!" He hissed with a growl in perfect english.
"AND YOU'RE VERY STUBBORN YAUTJA!" I screamed at him in return.
He stared at me with an obvious, "How the heck did you know I was Yautja?" look.
"And I am not human by the way." I said without giving him a chance to come back from his initial shock. I'm sure that if his mask had been off, his mandibles would have fallen to the ground.
Still stunned and standing there, he looked at me intensely as if trying to make out what I was saying for himself. I used this moment of surprise to quickly brief him on my situation and asked him again to PLEASE, take me to his leader, or clan Elder, or whomever the hell was in charge on his ship. He stood there for a while trying to digest what I had said and eventually walked up to me and started looking me over.
Nem-Tak walked around this medium-sized female scrutinizing her body in an effort to detect what incredible announcement she had made. She looked at him nervously as he eventually walked around her emitting low growls and clicks as he was asking himself how any of this could be. Surely his kind would be aware of a species such as the one this female advanced to belong to. He took a step to face her and brought his mask close to her face.
"I cannot see a difference in your body that would tell me that you are anything other than a puny Ooman female!" Nem-Tak hissed.
I looked up at him and explained that the difference could not be seen to the naked eye, and that they resided in my genetic makeup. I then proceeded to tell him that the only distinguishable differences were that I could hear better, see better and that my overall strength was also much better than most humans.
The large Yautja took a fighting stance and glared at me.
"Ok Gy-gen, if that is truly what you are. We will fight, and if you survive, I will bring you before Elder Garak and he will decide your worth to us."
Before he even had time to move, I was already in his face delivering a strong blow to the side of his head with my foot. Not expecting the blow, he landed on his side, really hard.
He scrambled to get up ranting and roaring, his talons digging in the floor as he got up. He was livid. I somehow knew that if I gave him the chance to get up I was screwed!
So, as he almost made it back to his feet I front-flipped and landed both my feet as hard as I could directly on his torso. This caused him to fly backwards and land on his ass. Really hard AGAIN. If looks could kill, I think that I would have been dead by now!
