Chapter One: It’s Meant to Be
***
“Welcome back students,” Ms. Darbus said handing out flyers. “I hope your thanksgiving breaks went well. But it’s back to school and our daily lives. Let me start off by saying that we are going to be doing things a little differently here in the Drama Department. Rather than waiting until after your Christmas break to begin auditions for the Winter Musi-CAL, we will be doing them on Friday. That gives all of you hopefuls four days to prepare your stuff.”
Most of the class groaned. Sharpay looked at her brother and smiled. Ryan gave a half smile back at her then turned away. Troy sat in the back of the class staring forward at the back of Ryan’s head.
“This year’s Winter Musi-CAL will be a little different as well,” Ms. Darbus continued. “There are three leads in this show rather than just two. There are two male leads and one female lead. Auditions will be single.”
“What?!” Sharpay stood up, “Two male leads but only one female lead? How dare you let this happen!”
Sharpay stomped out of the classroom.
“Goodness,” Ms. Darbus sighed. “Well, that will just make her try harder. Class dismissed.”
The students got up and left the classroom. Troy began walking to his locker.
“Troy,” Ryan said smiling as he walked up.
“Hey babe,” Troy said.
Ryan laughed. “So are you going to try out?”
“For what?” Troy looked at Ryan confused.
“The Winter Musical,” Ryan laughed. “There are two male leads. You are sure to get one.”
“Oh,” Troy scratched the back of his head. “I’m not sure I want to. Besides you want it don’t you?”
“There are two male leads silly,” Ryan said as they stopped at Troy’s locker. “One for me and one for you.”
“I guess,” Troy said. “But I really don’t think I can stomach doing another musical.”
“Aw come on,” Ryan pouted as he clung his hands to Troy’s sides. “Do it for me?”
“Okay,” Troy sighed. “I guess if it’s for you I can’t say no.”
Ryan rose up and kissed him, then walked away.
***
“Chad,” Sharpay said running up to the boy.
“Hey Shar,” Chad smiled as he kissed her cheek. “How’s it hangin?”
“Don’t say hangin to me ever again,” Sharpay said. “Listen. I need someone to watch me rehearse for my audition for the musical. I must beat out Gabriella. I will not lose to her again.”
“Oh right,” Chad said. “I’ll call you after practice then.”
“Fabulous,” Sharpay grinned then walked away.
Chad continued walking as he watched Sharpay do her “model walk” away from him. He continued to the locker rooms where he got changed and ready for practice.
“I can’t believe you,” Zeke said.
“What?” Chad turned to find his teammate standing behind him.
“I am in love with Sharpay,” Zeke said. “You hated her. Now suddenly you’re dating her?”
“It’s been about three months now Zeke,” Chad said. “Maybe two and a half. Either way it’s not like it just happened. Why are you bringing this up now?”
“What are you doing here anyways?” Jason asked as he walked in.
“Oh,” Chad said. “Coach didn’t tell you?”
The two shook their heads.
“Troy didn’t tell you either?” Chad said.
The two still shook their heads.
“Oh,” Chad said. “Well Troy and I worked out our differences. It happened a few days ago. I emailed him to talk and we got together for some lunch. I apologized for what happened and letting Sharpay take it there.”
“And so,” Troy said entering the room. “As my brother, I made him pay for our lunches. But we’re cool now. So I recanted my vote thus making it not a full team vote. So Chad is back on the team.”
Zeke and Jason shrugged.
“Thanks for that man,” Chad smiled. “You know I really am sorry about it.”
“Don’t worry,” Troy said. “It worked out in the end and that’s all that matters.”
“Yeah,” Chad said. “What I did was pretty brutal. I’m glad that we can still be brothers through it all.”
“Just don’t ever do that to me again,” Troy said. “Or anything close to that again. Especially if you want to be looked at by the colleges.”
“I wont,” Chad said. “I don’t even know why I did in the first place.”
“You were mad,” Troy said.
“You’re too understanding,” Chad laughed.
“Let’s get going to practice,” Troy said as he ran out of the room closely followed by Chad.
***
After practice Troy showered and changed. He quickly headed out the locker room and down the hall to the drama department. Ryan was there.
“Hey Ry,” Troy said breathing heavily.
“Hey,” Ryan said. “You ready to rehearse? You want this part don’t you?”
“Maybe,” Troy said catching his breath. “Let me catch my breath real quick.”
“I know you want it,” Ryan said. “The two male leads sing a duet in this show.”
“About what?” Troy asked looking over Ryan’s shoulder at the script.
“About the female lead,” Ryan said. “She is the object of both their affection. The song is about what they each think of her. In the end, only one of the male leads get her.”
“So wait,” Troy said. “You and I, saying we get the parts, are going to have to compete over a girl?”
“Yeah,” Ryan laughed. “That’s pretty ironic now that I think about it.”
“Yes,” Troy said grabbing Ryan and pulling him close. Troy leaned in and kissed him.
“Troy,” Ryan broke the kiss. “We have to rehearse if we want these parts. If we both get them we get to sing together.”
“You and your family and singing,” Troy said. “All the Evans family wants to do is sing with me.”
“I have better reasons,” Ryan said kissing him. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Troy said. “That’s the only reason I’m going to do this.”
“Well,” Ryan said. “At least it’s a good reason.”
The two laughed.
“Now let’s get started,” Ryan said.
Ryan handed Troy a script and the two began going over the audition song.
***
“Welcome to this years Winter Musi-CAL auditions,” Ms. Darbus yelled from the stage of auditorium to all of the hopefuls in the audience.
Sharpay was sitting next to Chad who had come to support her. Ryan and Troy were sitting further back. Troy was looking over his song once more. Also there was Gabriella who had decided to give the lime light another shot.
“We will start off with auditions for our male leads,” Ms. Darbus announced. “Seems we have a few guys ready to fight for these titles. We will start of with Ryan Evans, followed by Troy Bolton, and…”
Ms. Darbus continued listing off the names of theater hopefuls that wanted one of the male leads. Ryan headed up for his audition and sung the song Ms. Darbus had supplied in the exact key that Kelsi had written it. The crowd clapped then Troy did his number. It was the same as Ryan’s. He also received a lot of approval from the audience. The other boys, mostly younger, went on with their auditions as well.
“Ah,” Ms. Darbus said as the last boy finished. “Very good. I see we only have two thespians fighting for our female lead. Gabriella Montez, you will go first, and following you will be Sharpay Evans.”
Gabriella nervously made her way up to the middle of the stage. She took in a deep breath and remembered that she had been able to do this before. So she began her song. When she completed her number she was given a standing ovation by most of the audience. This angered Sharpay who was next. She headed up and did her number when it was her turn. She was given and equal standing ovation. She grinned and bowed.
“Thank you all,” Ms. Darbus said at the end of the audition process. “I will be posting our cast list tomorrow afternoon. Be sure to check.”
The students filed out of the auditorium talking amongst themselves.

“How do you think you did?” Chad asked Sharpay.
“What?!” Sharpay turned to him, “I did the best. I am a lock for the lead girl.”
“Absolutely,” Chad grinned.
“Now,” Sharpay said. “Take me to get something to eat.”
Sharpay slung her jacket over her shoulder. It smacked Chad’s face.
“Sure,” Chad shrugged and followed her as she walked away.
***
“Troy you did so well,” Ryan said.
“Thanks babe,” Troy said kissing Ryan in his truck. “You did better though.”
“Either way,” Ryan smiled. “We are both going to get to sing that duet together.”
“The question is,” Troy laughed. “Who is our leading lady?”
“We’ll find out tomorrow,” Ryan said. “Meet me for lunch?”
“On the roof?” Troy asked.
“Sure,” Ryan said. “My favorite place to see you.”
“Sure thing,” Troy smiled and kissed Ryan.
Troy drove Ryan home and then went to his house.
***
The next day Troy waited on the rooftop atrium for Ryan to show up. After a little while Ryan finally did.
“Hey,” Ryan said as he sat down.
He kissed Troy.
“Hey,” Troy smiled. “You look very nice in those clothes.”
Troy gave Ryan a look over. Ryan was wearing a shirt from Troy’s closet and a pair of jeans they had purchased together.
“Thanks,” Ryan said.
“My style works on you,” Troy smiled.
Ryan let out a small giggle. He loved it when Troy complimented him. Ryan kissed him.
“We better eat,” Troy said. “That way we can be fully energized when we see that list.”
“What if we don’t get parts?” Ryan asked, “I mean, what if I don’t get one. A lot of those other guys were so good.”
“You will,” Troy said. “As far as I know, I’m the only one who’s ever beaten you out. This time you don’t really have to compete with me.”
“Funny,” Ryan pouted. Troy kissed him.
***
Ryan and Troy quickly walked down the hall to where the cast list would be posted. It was surrounded my many of the people at auditions. Troy and Ryan stood back until everyone had disappeared. Troy ran his finger down the list.
“For the part of Avery,” Troy said. “Ryan Evans.”
“And for the part of Max,” Ryan said. “Troy Bolton.”
“Good job,” Troy kissed Ryan’s cheek.
“Get out of the way,” Sharpay pushed them aside. “For the part of Ana… Gabriella Montez? What!? Not again.”
“I got the part?” Gabriella said from behind, “Really?”
“Oh put a sock in it,” Sharpay stomped off yelling, “Chad!”
“Congratulations guys,” Gabriella said. “This is going to be so much fun.”
“So wait,” Troy said. “You got the part of the guy that ends up getting her right?”
“Yeah so?” Ryan asked.
“Doesn’t that mean you two have to kiss at the end?” Troy frowned.
Ryan’s eyes widened.
“My boyfriend and my ex-girlfriend kissing,” Troy sighed. “Great.”
Troy turned away from Ryan and walked away.
