The Greatest Gift

The Greatest Gift

Prelude:

"Jean!" He yelled out in heartfelt surprise and relief, "Jean, you're alive!" His broken heart swelling with life once more at the sight of his once thought dead lover. Running over to her he can feel wrongness in the air all about, even she seems to be wrong...no she is what is wrong. His pace slows as fear grips his heart.

'What if this is a dream? Something is wrong, terribly wrong. Why doesn't she call out to me? This must be some nightmare.' Doubts cloud his head at seeing his lovers eyes clouded out, perverted by something dark; there is no love in those eyes. "Jean?" He calls out tepidly slowing even more at the smile twisting her lips.

"Scott, where are you? Oh there you are, I need to see your eyes dear, so I know its really you." He screws his eyes shut tightly when he feels his visor begin to lift from his face. "No no Scott, open your eyes, I need to see them." He shakes his head furiously at her.

"No, I can't! I can't hurt you!" He yells out, but is meet with a slightly condescending tone.

"Trust me Scott, you do trust me don't you?" Having no effect she switches tactics softly and whispers out, "Trust me Scott, you can't hurt me."

Tears slide down his cheeks afraid, terribly afraid of what he's about to do. Slowly, fearfully he opens his eyes, the awesome power of his blasts out, but is quickly suppressed until it is nothing. He stares unbelievably at Jean, who is radiating pure nearly uncontrollable power. Her eyes cloud over darkly as parts of the earth disintegrate, her power fluctuating dangerously creating chaos all about them.

"What happened to you Jean?" He whispers out in concern and his voice draws her back to him and he looks into her eyes seeing sadness, and an immense all consuming madness.

"I'm sorry Scott, I really am." A lighting bold of power whips off striking his face leaving a trail of blood. Understanding his fate he looks sadly into her eyes moving in to embrace her drawing more painful whips to his flesh.

"I'm sorry too, I love you Jean." He whispers into her ear as the power reaches a new crescendo. For just a moment her eyes are really hers and she looks at him gently, bending to kiss his forehead. Blinding, searing pain hits him, burning him from within and he knows this is the end, but her lovely voice whispers in his head.

~My gift to you for all the love you have given me, goodbye Scott. I love you.~

And he knew no more.

Chapter 1:

Superman is enjoying floating high above the stratosphere gazing down upon his home when his finely tuned ears pick up an otherworldly sound. Eyes focusing on the area the unworldly screech he watches as shocks waves of black lightning laced with fire arcs around. Jetting down at top speed he watches the tendrils of energy withering about wildly wreaking havoc on nearby buildings. Where the tendrils strike nothing remains, its almost as if their darkness swallows it all away.

Landing down Superman searches his brain for a way to deal with the energy...it almost seems as if it is alive and in pain as the fire consumes it. Before he can reach some sort of plan the writhing mass sucks inward, consuming itself before blowing out in a magnificent explosion of energy that sends the man in blue flying back into a nearby building. The energy leaves him smoking and charred, getting past even his defenses. Seared hands reach out grabbing and tossing aside pieces of cement that once were a building as he shakily makes it back to his feet.

'What on Earth was that?!' Eying the blacken tatters of the front of his suit he is glad to see most of the burns are superficial, only his exposed skin took its full force. Quickly Forgetting his injuries he moves over to the recently created and still smoking Crater. Reaching the lip he gazes down surprised to see the form of a naked male curled at the epicenter. Flying quickly he sets down and scans the man, amazingly the man is alive and nearly uninjured save a few burns. Ignoring the pain as skin flecks off his hands he carefully lifts the man holding him to his chest.

He is left stunned by the sorrowful beauty of the unconscious man, even sleep his features are twisted in sadness and longing. "Who are you?" Superman wonders quietly as he lifts off taking the man to a doctor worthy of his trust.

"He's not human." A rush of thoughts flood in at those words, Superman blinks slowly digesting the words and all the possible implications they could have...Am I not alone? Is there another survivor? His heart swells with warmth at the possibility, turning he looks up into Diana's eyes that hold just a touch of worry as they look into his own that are so filled with hope.

"I'm not saying.."

"I know, I know. Just the possibility though...what if I really am not the last?" Superman cuts her off when she tries to not let his hopes get too high. Shaking his head in attempt to fight down the desperate hope, he sighs, "It would be nice to not be alone anymore..." Blue eyes flick over to the unconscious man laying pristinely still under white cloth which adds to the man's angelic appearance. Somehow the man's dark hair is tousled just so, full pink lips pout slightly and his face scrunches up in worry.

Without thinking Superman runs his fingers soothingly through the mans hair, brushing his scalp trying to ease the troubled man's sleep. The man's stirrings calm momentarily before he scrunches his eyes closed with a look of anguish, as if even asleep he is about to cry and fighting it.

Superman's eyes fill with worry when the man seems to moan in pain whispering so faintly only Superman's ears can hear, "Jean..." Superman wraps his arms around the man's shoulders and he starts to jerk and shake. Looking down at the man's face so filled with sadness he is completely blind sighted when those eyes open.

"JEAN!!!!" He screams out opening his eyes, Superman watches on frozen by what happens. Red light escapes in slits as the eyes fly open, blinding red light blares out and even with his inhuman speed Superman only has the time to look away and pull the man's head into his chest attempting to absorb all of the immense energy. Not even the man of steel is prepared for the searing force of the energy striking him. He can feel his almost impervious suit vaporize in an instant laying his skin bare without protection to the blazing heat.

The pain of it surprises him, knocking the air from his lungs in a small cry before he is blown back by its power. The beam of red smashes him back and out of a window before it disappears. Still in shock Superman plummets down a few stories before willing himself to stop, coughing in air painfully through burnt lungs he flys back up into the private loft. He is surprised to see the man curled in on himself on the floor next to the bed covers thrown wide. White knuckled, the man holds his head, with his eyes screwed tightly shut sobbing.

"Oh god no, I'm sorry, I'm sorry." Realizing that the man probably thought that he had killed him Superman floats over and drops to his knees near the man.

"Shhh...its okay I'm fine." He whispers while reaching a hand out to touch a shaking shoulder. The man jerks in surprise at the touch and the voice before reaching his hands out and frantically feeling his way up Superman's arm. His hands slide up over the blue clothed arm up his shoulder and feel along his face. Superman is frozen when the man's warm hands touch his cheeks gently...seeming to memorize him.

Its been so long since he has felt the intimate touch of another, blue eyes sliding closed, cheeks warm and a smile comes to his lips enjoying the touch. I am not alone, he cannot help but think after witnessing the man's awesome but somewhat familiar power.
A frown creases his lips when those warm hands leave, then he inhales sharply at the pain when those hands touch the burnt flesh on his abdomen before quickly disappearing again. Superman reopens his eyes and smiles gently at the other man even though the man will not open his eyes.

"It's okay, I'm already healing." Superman says softly as he grabs a hold of the man's hands and guides them to his chest. The hands flinch at touching the charred flesh, but Superman holds firm. A look of wonder comes across the man's features as the flesh beneath his fingers softens and heals and is perfect once more, he smiles slightly before falling limp only to be caught by the man in blue.
