Summary: This is set at the point where Jack visits Ennis after hearing about his divorce. What if Jack hadn't driven to Mexico? What if he decided to turn back to give Ennis an Altimatium?

******************************************************

“Whut you doin’ here huh?” Ennis asked as he pulled Jack into a fierce embrace
Whut is he doin’ here? We ain’t meetin’ ‘till next month

“Got the message ‘bout the divorce” Jack replied happily, speaking into the crook of Ennis’ neck. He pulled back slightly to move to kiss Ennis.
It’s finally happened. He’s free, he’s finally free and we can be together now

Ennis saw what Jack was about to do and pulled back and turned his head slightly
Not here Jack, my girls are in the truck

“Come ‘ere and meet my girls” Ennis said as he disengaged from Jack’s tight arms

Ennis walked towards his truck, Jack eagerly following. Once they got to the drivers side window, Ennis introduced everyone.

“This here is Jack. Jack, these are my little girls. Alma Junior and Jenny”

The two young girls smiled at their daddy’s handsome friend who had the gentlest, blue eyes and most amazing smile.

“Hey” Jack said warmly, smiling broadly
Wow…so these are Ennis’ little girls. Christ that Junior sure looks like him…got his eyes…and his mouth…and…oh yes…his freckles!!!

They didn’t reply at first so Ennis prompted them

“Say Hi girls”

“Hi” they said in unison, Jack smiled even bigger at them, his blue eyes sparkling.

Ennis made a subtle motion of his head to direct Jack away so they could talk privately. Jack understood and they moved away. Jack just couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face. Ever since their reunion in ’67 this is what he had dreamed of happening.
8 years…Christ 8 years…well 12 really…but 8 years and it’s finally happening. He’ll do it now. He ain’t got nothin’ stoppin’ ‘im no more. He’ll be with me…

“Got your card the divorce came through…so here I am! Had to ask ‘bout 10 different people in Riverton where you’d moved to!”

Jack knew he shouldn’t really be happy his best friend was divorced, but his selfish side was rejoicing. Now he knew he wouldn’t have to play second fiddle to Alma anymore. He would be with Ennis all the time. His own divorce was being processed at the moment as well. As soon as he’d got the card about Ennis’ divorce, he had started his own. He and Lureen were no longer married, except on paper. They barely spoke, didn’t sleep in the same room, and only stayed together for Bobby’s sake. Jack knew this really wasn’t the best thing for Bobby, because if Lureen and Jack weren’t arguing, they weren’t talking to each other. Bobby would be better off if they did split because then he and Lureen would be happier. With all the Newsome money it wouldn’t take long and the money that LD had given him to divorce his daughter, plus his own money he’d been saving since ‘67 would set him and Ennis up nicely. That Cow and Calf operation was just a fingertip away.

Jack could sense Ennis’ confusion as to why he had come so decided to make it clearer.

“Well I guess I thought this meant…” he started

“Jack… I don’t know what to say. See I got the girls today.” Ennis stuttered. He could see the bright light of hope and excitement in Jack’s eyes and it was killing him. He knew what Jack had thought.
Oh no…Jack…you came here thinkin’…oh fuck…oh fuck…no Jack…don’t…please don’t…I cain’t

He saw the way Jack’s sun bright smile slipped slightly and the sparkle in his eyes dimmed.

“I’m sure as hell sorry… you know I am.”
Please Jack…understand…don’t look at me like that…I am so sorry Jack…I didn’t mean ta get ya hopes up like this…shit…shit

“See I only get them once a month and I missed last month so I just…” Ennis trailed off a little as he noticed a truck passing on the road. He watched it closely and Jack followed Ennis’ gaze as he continued “…cause of the roundup so I…well…” Ennis ducked his head to hide his eyes.

Ennis didn’t have to look to see Jack deflate. He felt it. He risked a glance out from under his hat and saw that Jack’s eyes were dull. No light, no sparkle. His smile gone.

“Yeh alright” Jack said coldly, not looking at Ennis, swallowing hard, trying to not cry
Fuck Ennis…ya turnin’ me away…ya sendin’ me back to Lureen…now…shit…this fuckin’ hurts…why ya doin’ this Ennis? Why?

“Jack…” Ennis started but wasn’t really sure where that was going. He knew there was nothing he could say that would bring that light back to Jack’s eyes. To bring that smile back. He also knew he was the reason for it and it made his heart ache. Jack looked at him briefly then ducked his own head. The tears were close to spilling and there was no way he would let Ennis see them.

“I’ll see ya next month then” he said quietly, quickly glancing at Ennis as he backed away then strode over to his truck
Gotta get outta here…gotta get away…cain’t be here…shouldn’t be here…he don’t want me here anyway…no one wants me no more…fuckin’ Ennis…why ya doin’ this to me…to us?

These thoughts were making him mad so when he opened the truck door he practically wrenched the thing off it’s hinges. He slammed the door so hard the window rattled. He didn’t look at Ennis as he started the engine and quickly backed out and drove off. He couldn’t look. If he did, he would either start crying or yelling. Neither of which he wanted to do with Ennis there. He would vent his despair and rage somewhere more private, preferably with the bottle of Whiskey he had bought to celebrate in his hand

Ennis was left standing there as he watched Jack’s truck pull away. He could see the pain and disappointment in Jack’s eyes in the brief glimpse he was given. He also saw that Jack’s eyes were full of unshed tears of despair and hopelessness. He’d only ever seen Jack’s eyes like that twice before. The first time was when they first parted in ’63. The second time was when they reunited in ’67 and Ennis had turned down Jack’s Cow & Calf operation idea. Now, here in ’75, he had seen it again. And, once again, it was his fault. He was the reason for that inner light and hope that Jack always had, to be snuffed out. He felt a solitary tear trickle down his cheek which he wiped away quickly.

He turned on his heels and trudged dejectedly towards his own truck. When he got in, Junior spoke

“You ok daddy?”

“Yeh sweetheart, I’m fine” he lied with a false little smile. Junior wasn’t fooled, she could see the tears in her daddy’s eyes.

“Ya don’t look it. Did ya friend have bad news? Has somethin’ bad happened Daddy?”

“No angel…everythin’s fine” he said, voice shaking slightly.

He repeated that over and over in his head as he drove his girls to town, thinking that if he thought it enough it would be true. Deep down though, he knew that everything was anything but fine. He knew that he had broken Jack’s heart and had no idea if he would ever forgive him. If he would even ever see Jack again.
