What Happens In Gotham

What Happens In Gotham

By: TheDisasterousChibi

Chapter One: Honey, I’m Going Home!

Gotham city.

Home to the scum of the earth, a ruthless miserable place – a two-faced city. One side pristine and wealthy, the other was a decrepit excuse for a city, overrun by the mob and corrupt policemen. The town was infested with these low breed scum, each more twisted and unworthy of life then the next.

Gotham was a far cry from her home in Metropolis, home to Lex Luther, the Daily Planet and of course Superman. Perhaps the only thing the two cities had in common; men in muscle hugging tights--regular robin hoods-- but even in that they were different.

Superman was the city’s most priced citizen, he received awards, kissed babies, for heaven’s sake he even had a known love interest in Lois Lane, his personal connection to the world, the star reporter.

Gotham’s Dark Knight, Batman, however was a vigilante, hunted by the police, even if it was for appearance’s sake, shrouded in mystery and black leather. The Batman was unapproachable; Superman looked like a cuddly Koala next to the brooding Knight.

So it was safe to say that when Lieutenant Katarina Napier learned she was going to be transferred to the Gotham police she was not doing cartwheels in her Commissioner’s office.

In fact her reaction was something more like this: brown eyes narrowed in rage, nostrils flaring, mouth set in a frown of indignation. She was the picture of semi-controlled rage, with just a hint of disbelief.

Yes, much more realistic.

“Commissioner, Gotham? What have I done to deserve exile?” the barely contained growl gave Katarina’s voice a defiant tone as she stood before her superior’s desk awaiting an answer.

“They need you there Napier, you specialize in criminal psychology, and not many people in Gotham do.” Commissioner Johnson said looking at one of his few female officers.

“That being the case, they requested that our top analyst make a visit to Gotham in hopes of helping them catch someone that goes by ‘The Joker’. Not only that, but Metropolis does a lot of trading with Wayne Enterprises.” The commissioner continued.

He noted that logic was not making Katarina any more…docile. So he turned to crushing authority.

“That’s why I’m giving you the rest of the night off, tomorrow morning you will go to Gotham and stay there until they no longer have a need for you. Do I make myself clear, Napier?” His voice was gruff, giving one of his most trusted and most gifted officers a glacial stare.

“Yes sir, crystal. But what about my son? I can’t leave him here and Gotham isn’t exactly know for its safety.” Seeing a loophole, a way to escape this horrible assignment, Katarina mentally apologized to her son for using him like this.

“Katarina”, the commissioner heaved a heavy sigh, “I can’t let you back out of this, Gotham needs you and Metropolis needs Gotham, no matter how much we resent it, especially now that Stark Industries seems to be going down hill.”

The Commissioner shifted the papers on his desk, looking for the folder that contained the information Katarina would need, finding it, he extended his arm to pass the plain beige folder, marred only by the works Joker Case, written in black permanent marker.

“You and your son will be transferred to Gotham, temporarily. I have taken the liberty to enroll him into an elementary school in Gotham, so you don’t need to trouble yourself.”

Seeing the evil glint in his subordinate’s brown eyes sent shivers down the commissioner’s spine, she was as defensive as a lioness when it came to her son, so involving him in this would probably cost him a month of icy insults and the silent treatment upon her return.

The only thing worse then an enraged officer Napier, was a quiet officer Napier; quiet meant she was planning.

“You and your son will be living with the assistant D.A of Gotham, a Rachel Dawes. She lives in a very secure part of the town and has agreed to accommodate you for the length of your stay.” His arms were beginning to tremble slightly with the effort it took to hold out the folder for an extended period of time.

Seeing no way out of her corner, Katarina Napier gave her commissioner one last half-hearted glare of defeat and took the folder. Saluting Johnson, the tall officer twisted around, causing her long black braid to whip out, in a threatening manner, as she exited the office.

‘Oh God,’ thought Commissioner Johnson, ‘this is going to come back and bite me in the ass.’

With the folder tucked snuggly onto her side Katarina made her way to her desk, not caring that the look on her face made the other officers, who had seen her in this mood before, give her a wide berth of passage.

Ripping her coat from the back of her chair, she whipped it on violently and took her gun out of its drawer, along with her badge and purse. The fuming, yet defeated, woman made her way to the double glass doors that made up the entrance to the Metropolis Police Station, roughly pushing them open to leave the heated inside of the Station.

Katarina dug into her pockets looking for the key to her tiny blue mini cooper. The chill of the autumn night refreshed her flushed skin, anger was a hot business. Opening her car door, Katarina slid into the driver’s seat, stuck the key into the ignition and let her head hit the steering wheel.

‘Why Gotham. Why there. Why not Fiji or Communist China? Anywhere but Gotham.

Wasn’t it hard enough leaving after he left me!’

Taking a deep calming breath, hoping to keep the tears and the old sting of pain full memories at bay Katarina shifted her car to drive and focused on the most important thing in her life.

Her son.

Tomorrow she would worry about this so called Joker.
