Prologue
"Do you understand the rules?" Singe asked the terrified young vampire. Barely more than a fledgling, really. Those always tasted best. So tender...
The Blood nodded, his entire being trembling. Singe suspected that he knew as surely as the scientist himself that he did not have long to live. It was part of the game, and Singe loved it. He severed the rope binding the young immortal's hands.
"I'll give you a head start of 30 seconds. Make it past the fence, and I will let you live. If not..." The lycan grinned, his eyes already glinting with ill-concealed urge to kill, slay and mutilate.
He watched as the vampire ran off, still clinging to the hope of being able to save his own life. Singe waited for as long as he'd promised - the Blood did not have the ghost of a chance, anyway; this would be like hunting a rabbit. Then he transformed, but not all the way. It was always more fun if his mind stayed a bit less primal...
Limbs extended and sprouted claws, and he was off. His ears and snout changed and his eyes became the brilliant cobalt that all lycans possessed in their times of transformation. The smell of the vampire filled his lungs and he brought on a burst of speed. He knew the terrain better than the prey, and knew of the gopher holes which were obscured by patches of grass.
In the moment that the vampire tripped in a hole, yelping at the pain of his ankle breaking, he only had time to look up and scream.
