Unforeseeable Consequences

Jack wasn’t entirely sure weather he should be measuring his voyage in days, weeks or months at this point. Having run out of all but a half bottle of rum some time ago without even a spot of land in sight was starting to effect his already less than stable mind. Currently the famous Captain Jack Sparrow lay in the bottom of his dinghy watching the full blue moon surrounded by jealously twinkling stars. His favorite part of the day, dusk, had come and gone a short time ago. Now the salty air was cool but not quite uncomfortable, however if a wind came up it would certainly inflict a biting chill. The gentle lapping of water and Jack’s humming of a familiar tune broke an otherwise eerie silence as dark eyes watched the sky. Many a man had died trying to find the fountain, Jack knew this well, but he didn’t think any had ended in a fate like this: completely alone without even a bottle of rum to comfort him. He wondered if he would see William on the way to the after life or perhaps he was bound for the locker again. Wouldn’t that be a barrel of fun? Even half crazed as the pirate was certain himself to be he feared returning to the locker. His mind had only just been rid of the delusions from his last misadventure and Jack didn’t fancy having them back, no matter how interesting conversation tended to be with his double gangers. Half heartedly he sent a prayer to Calypso asking for her to help him out of the mess Barbossa had dropped him in once again as he raised his bottle of rum to his chapped lips.

A splashing off to one side broke the pirate captain’s thoughts. Another splash and a few droplets landing on his face had Jack glancing over the starboard side of his dinghy. Nothing. There was nothing that he could make out in the dark water. He checked over the other side only to find more calm, dark water. Perhaps some dolphins had found him and were playing tricks? It was the only explanation that the pirate could come up with. Suddenly another, much larger splash soaked the backside of Jack’s loose shirt. Snarling Jack whipped around ready to yell at the offending creature, whatever it may be, but was met once again with calm water. He sat silent and perplexed for a moment when the soft humming of a tune caught his ear and it wasn’t coming from him. Turning around slowly Jack prepared himself for the sight of some horrible beastie that would probably devour him with no remorse in it’s hideous heart. Instead his eyes lit upon the innocently grinning face of a youth with long black hair floating around a feminine face like a shroud and dark, blue-violet eyes with pale blue where the whites should have been sparkling up at him. A swirling design started at the corner of the being’s eye and flowed down it’s left cheek as the strange, bright eyes stared calmly up at Jack. The pirate’s own brown orbs widened comically. Unsure if the child was real or not Jack reach slowly out to touch it but the face sunk until only the startling eyes were visible and now staring wearily up at the captain.

“Well, aren’t ye something’ ...” Jack murmured and the little face lifted a bit, “Fascinating little hallucination ye be, most certain.”

A giggle escaped the grinning child as he rose back up a bit. Jack opened his mouth to speak when another drenching splash had him looking over his shoulder at another smirking youngling as the blue eyed one shook with giggles before he disappeared under the water with barely a ripple. The second being was obviously a boy. Water glinted off a smooth olive skinned chest and short, spiky black hair in shined the moonlight as he floated half a foot from the boat. The delighted, laughing eyes were even odder than the other‘s with the whites a dark forest and irises a pale almost mint color. Next the pirates eyes strayed to strange barbs that lay not quite flush with the boy’s forearms and wrists as wiry arms crossed the slim young chest. Jack turned to fully face the youth when said mink dove backwards, flinging a dark green spiked fish tail into the air and bringing it down hard to splash Jack square in the face. Staggering to a furious stand and ready to yell at the whelp for thoroughly drenching him Jack paused barely two words into the rant and looked back at the water before him. Two facts struck out at Jack like an angry Tortuga wench in that moment as he stared at both creatures now laying back in a relaxed manner in the calm water. One: the other child was a boy as well and his pale chest was just as smooth if less muscular then the darker skinned one. Two: they had fish tails. Fish tails! Captain Jack Sparrow was seeing mermaids... Err… merboys as it were. The paler boy had spikes on his arms as well. Four of them to be exact that were smaller but no doubt just as sharp as his companions and they both wore necklaces made of shiny shells and a single large pearl resting just below sharp collar bones. The pale boy had a large black pearl and the other a slight oblong white pearl. Very expensive pearls no doubt.

“And who might ye two dandy’s be?” Jack asked in a friendly voice. The two smiled.

“I’m Quicken!” Chirped the blue eyed mer’.

“Lye.” Murmured the other, older looking of the pair.

“An’ I’m Captain Jack Sparrow. Now tha’ we’re all acquainted like why not tell me what you whelps be up to at this time o’ night?”

“Finding you.” They said in unison.

“Really now and who might ‘ave sent ye after poor ol‘ Jack?” The pirate asked concerned that the boy’s innocence was an act.

“Lady Calypso! She told us to come here, that we‘d find a spot of fun in helping you!” Quicken said as he turned around to lay on his stomach in the water, mouth beneath the surface but odd blue eyes shining up at the pirate.

“Help me how? Ye boys look not but ten summers old!” Jack barked in disbelief.

“I’m 357.” Lye deadpanned.

“Oh… An’ Kenny, how old ye be?” Jack asked curiously.

“I’m not Kenny! I’m Quicken and I’m 284 summers old! We‘re both still very young for merfolk!” The younger mer lifted his head to speak.

“Not anymore.” Lye muttered under his breath.

“Why not anymore?” Jack asked as he watched the two.

“When Lady Calypso was locked away most of our kind died. Without our lady we are, or were… Lost…” Quicken said sadly, averting his eyes. Jack’s own dark brown orbs widened. He doubted anyone, the current council of Pirate Lords nor the first, had considered beyond themselves what would happen upon Calypso’s entrapment.

“Wha’ happened?” Jack’s voice was sober as he sat back down in the dingy.

“Without Lady Calypso to care for us no one else would.” Lye shrugged and lay back in the water again, staring up at the stars.

“Many things came after us.” Quicken said with a shudder, “Like Captain Jones’ horrid kraken. It took a special liking to us. Things are better now though!”

Lye rolled his eyes but smiled fondly at his friends sudden chirp and nodded in agreement, “Indeed, our Lady is back and her children thrive.”

“Tha’s good ta hear. Speaking of thriving I’d rather like to take part in that meself, alas I have run short on food and other…” Jack paused to think a moment and glanced at his last half bottle of rum, “Necessities for survival.”

“We could catch you some fish.” Quicken said perking up excitedly so he was upright again.

“Or we could take him to a port.” Lye said absently as he rolled onto his stomach into the same position his friend had been a moment before and began to draw swirling ripples in the water with one finger.

“I rather like that last idea!” Jack gave his two cents with a grin.

“Alright, but which port?” Quicken cocked his head cutely.

“The closest?” Jack asked a bit hopefully. The boys looked to one another and nodded before Lye swam over and hoisted himself up to look into the boat.

“You have a rope somewhere right?” Lye asked as he shuffled a few things about before finding a length of rope and falling back into the sea.

“Here Captain Sparrow. Were I you, I’d tie this tightly to something. A sturdy something might be best.” The smirking merboy tossed the human one end of the rope.

“Oh! Brilliant idea Lye! We can pull him along, it’ll be much faster that way since there isn’t a wind tonight!” Quicken was very excited now and pulled himself up to search for another length of rope for himself to use.

Without further question Jack did as asked then repeated the action with the second rope Quicken found. The boys secured the ropes around their torsos, Lye helping his younger friend. Jack was about to ask if they would be much longer and to which port exactly they were headed but before a word left the pirate’s mouth he found himself flung backward when the dinghy was jerked forward suddenly. While holding his hat tightly to his head, Jack peeked over the bow to see the boys several feet in front of the little boat tearing through the shimmering water. The man was mildly surprised that the pair were moving so smoothly and weren’t splashing much water into the boat. Glancing around Jack located what was left of his rum and snatched the murky bottle up before anymore of it’s precious contents was splashed to the deck. With one hand still on his hat and the other firmly grasping his last bit of rum Captain Jack Sparrow settled back in his slightly soggy seat to enjoy the voyage to wherever it was he was being taken. Jack’s only shining hope was that there was rum to be had at their destination. Taking a swig of his last bit of amber treasure brown eyes caught sight of a particularly bright star that seemed to be winking at him and something whispered to Jack Sparrow’s wily heart. With a wide grin and a tip of his rum bottle in thanks to the goddess who sent the merboys to his aid Jack hunkered down comfortably before beginning to hum to himself once again.

END ... Or is it?! DunDunDUN!!! Muahahahahahaha!!

A/N: This appeared out of thin air while my boyfriend was watching the pirates trilogy and drawing sea monsters for some class or another that he‘s taking at the local community college(Three cheers to my boy, he‘s finally at least trying to get back into school!!). Is it odd that when he draws while watching TV he always picks a movie or show that has some vague relation to what he’s drawing and rarely even realizes it? God I love him!
This little spit of a one-shot is a testing of my liking and others’ liking of my oc’s Quicken and Lye. I have a vague multi-chapter adventure outlined but I’m still debating on if I want to start it. I might do it in the future if Pauli keeps watching the movies over and over. I’ve been wanting to play with Captain Teague, I find him fascinating and it’s really sad how little we see of him in the movie.
