Confidant

Stokely is about to explode. This wasn’t fair.

“Fuck, thanks… I just couldn’t get to class today,” Zeke says, taking her notes from their shared biology class at Herrington Community. “I was up pretty late last night.”

“Yea,” she replies, not knowing why--already knowing why…

“Just--he’s so far away, y’know? We barely get time to talk, so I grab what I can get…”

The small, shy expression he wears is killing Stokely as he keeps speaking. ‘He really does love him,’ she thinks, her gut burning at the sight of his smile. She’s pretty damned sure what Casey’s doing at the moment, because he’s always doing it. He and Zeke could call each other a lot more often if he wasn’t. She has to force a smile on her face when she realizes that Zeke’s stopped talking. “Yea, I know,” she generically replies, and Zeke doesn’t seem to notice the strain in her voice as he shrugs.

“I don’t want to be too--smothering. Has he called you yet?”

Stokely blinks. “Huh?”

“Yea… he said he was gonna call to chat it up with you tonight. Something about some music he’s going to e-mail to you,” Zeke explains. It’s hard for Stokely not to wince and flinch away from looking into Zeke’s eyes.

“Oh yea, that… I dunno, not yet.”

“Okay. Maybe I’ll try to call him… but do you think that’d be too much?”

Zeke’s a boy in love--he’d never been that before, with anyone. She knows because she was a loner too, and the loners always seemed to look out for each other, even when they didn’t know they were doing it. While everyone at school would say, “Zeke doesn’t care about anyone,” Stokely would always counteract with, “Zeke doesn’t have anyone to care about.” Now that he did, her heart was torn in two. “Maybe, Zeke. He might not be there.”

“But he told me he was gonna call you, so he should be--”

“Zeke! Just…” she snaps. Now Zeke seems to notice her mood as he frowns and shakes his head.

“If you think I’m being an idiot about this, just say so. I just really… miss him, that’s all,” he says before stepping off of her porch stairs and turns to the street where the GTO waits. If she lets him go like this, she won’t get any sleep.

“Casey’s been seeing someone at school,” she calls after him. The words stop him dead in his tracks, still facing the road. “He’s been seeing someone else.”

It goes quiet and still for a few moments. She expects him to turn and start yelling, wanting to know how she knows, how long she’s known. She doesn’t want to answer truthfully, because sitting on a secret like this for three weeks had been guilt-inducing enough. The fact that Casey had hooked up with a junior boy at Purdue not three days after classes started would send Zeke into a tailspin. Casey had never been a liar, but people changed, especially when they were on their own in another school in another town in another state…

As much as she doesn’t want to go through this, she doesn’t know what’s worse; the fact that she owes Zeke answers, no matter her ‘confidant’ status with Casey or no, or that Zeke continues walking to his car, saying nothing. All Stokely can do is watch him get behind the wheel and peal from the curb, tires squealing halfway down the street.

She’s so mad at the little bastard that she goes straight to bed instead of ‘warning’ him. ‘He deserves it,’ she thinks before falling asleep.
