Chapter 1 - Redemption

***

This man was making trouble for him, oh he liked him himself no doubt about it for who else could depict him on canvas such as he was in flesh and blood form but the one before him? No the superb and magnificent talent of Francisco Goya couldn't be disregarded so callously and without reason. He wondered how he should announce his presence then settled for the question that was concerning him him a little too much, "do you know how powerful your enemies are?" In beaming magnanimity Goya turned around, an easel and brush in hand as he murmured," ahh brother Lorenzo, what a pleasure to see you again. Are you perhaps wondering if your portrait is finished?"

Rafael wondered if it was all a facade of Goya to lull him into a false sense of security. The inquisition was swift and brutal and yet he'd intervened because he'd genuinely felt that the rather smug man standing before him waiting for his reply was innocent, now he wasn't too assured. So he settled for a gentle smile in return his mind working furiously over the repercussions if indeed Goya was ousted as a blasphemous heretic.
His gaze however fell on a painting of a child-woman painted slightly in profile with a veil covering her head and the curls at her temple revealed, a tiny hand holding the edge of her veil. What caught his attention though wasn't the aesthetic beauty of the little girl though she had it in abundance but the look in her beautiful eyes. They looked lost and a little sad and for some reason he wanted to know why and what it was that was making her so sad.
His eyes fell back on Goya who was smiling still but now it was more indulgent and knowing than anything else. Angry and surprised at the sudden bout of jealousy gnawing at his insides his spoken enquiry next was both harsh and curt with what he was feeling, "tell me Francisco is it now the custom to be more intimately knowledgable with models these days?" The man's swiftly fading smile and genuine shock helped to alleviate some of his new and sudden feelings and his next words further crushed them completely as he muttered in outrage, "but she is only fourteen brother! She's barely a child whose father is a well known merchant and friend, who commisioned a painting for her fifteenth year." The rather frantic burst of speech ended with a more calmer and cunning question however as Goya asked, "Why the sudden interest from yourself brother Lorenzo?"

The disgust and disdain he heard in Goya's tone didn't matter one whit to him as he turned slightly to look at the beautiful child with the vulnerbale eyes, without turning he followed his instincts and asked softly, "what is her name Francisco?"
The reply was long in coming so when his eyes connected back with Goya's own the man must have realised the true depth of hunger as he murmured rather stiltedly, "Inés..."
He smiled again but this time when he continued walking back out of the studio his mind was imprinted with the face of Inés, his newest adition and subsequently his latest protege. His smile turned predatory as he thought of the trap he'd already set for his prey.
