Rose Tint My World

Prologue

April 2003

It began the night of the cornfield rave.

Usually freshman weren't invited to these things. But there had been such a crush of people in the halls that morning, Serena Smith had been able to pluck an invitation from the jock that had been handing them out and he had let her, since she had flashed him her dazzling smile. She had walked into her first period class and had faced her two friends and smacked the invite on the table, uttering those two fateful words "We're going". Hailey had never been to a real high school party before. But Serena and Tony Blake (the other friend at the table) had and they promised to teach her how to act and look. Hailey had said no at first, but Serena had begged and begged until she said yes. Hailey was shy, and usually Serena or Tony spoke for her. This party would be hell for her.

How right she was.

They got a ride from a senior that wanted to get into Serena's pants, in the metaphoric sense. As soon as they got to the cornfield, Serena and her date, Bill Freeburg left them so they could get beer. Hailey, Tony, Serena and Freeburg had Yearbook together, which was a skate class. They spent it smoking by the loading docks and sleeping. Tony and Hailey found some Pepsi and sat on one of the cars parked in the middle.

"Pretty fun, huh?" Tony drawled sarcastically.

"Totally," Hailey rolled her eyes and yawned.

"Have you been sleeping?"

"No."

"Nightmares?"

"Yes."

The nightmares had been a part of Hailey since she was a child. The man was the same, but the others were always different.

"Hailey, talk to someone. This isn't normal.'

"I'm fine."

"If you see a shrink, that doesn't mean you're crazy. We all need a little help sometimes." He smiled at her and leaned in a little closer. Hailey pulled away and glared at him.

"I don't."

Hailey stalked off, the force of her head turning making the cheap clip in her hair snap and break. Her hair fell free. It was the only thing that distinguished her from the crowd. It was wild, curly and a bit frizzy and it was a light blond, almost platinum. It hid her face when she needed it to. Like now. She pushed her way through the crowd and into the dark silence of the corn field. The stalks were taller than her, taller than the most of the party-goers. Hailey kept going, trying to find a bit of peace.

A rattle and shush-shush brought her out of her thoughts. To her left, she could see a large shadow. Soon, it became clear. It was a man. As he walked closer, she could see more and more. He was tall and built. This was not a small man. He moved slowly, but with a purpose. And the objects of his attention were the two jocks smoking pot a few rows away. Hailey made herself small and moved closer as well. She thought he was a farmer that wanted them to go away. What she saw made her clap her hand to her mouth in horror.

One boy's head went right around.

Then, the other set the man on fire.

But he kept walking.

Hailey followed them back to the party. She watched the calm before the storm. In the chaos, she was pulled into the center of the gray. She began to scream and run, and was nearly knocked over by a girl flailing around in her death spasms. Hailey was sprayed by her blood, and nearly choked on it. Then, she saw the man stab Tony.

"No!" she screamed and felt tears spring to her eyes. "No!"

Freeburg saw her and grabbed her hand. He dragged her through the chaos and they nearly tripped over Serena's body. They reached a van and Kia yelled for them to get in. soon, Hailey was sitting on the floor, trying to get the blood off her face.

"What the hell was that?" Freeburg asked.

"I don't know!" Lori yelled.

"Is that the guy from your dreams?" Will asked.

"No."

"Fuck the dream guy! That son of a bitch was real!"

They dropped everyone but Kia, Lori and Will off at Linderman's. They stood in the rain, Hailey crying and Freeburg looking for another joint.

"You have a good computer?" Freeburg asked as they sat in his basement a few minutes later.

"Yeah," Linderman said.

"Find out what you can about the hockey mask fuck," Freeburg said as he sucked on his joint. He handed it to Hailey, who shakily took a hit.

And that was how she was pulled into the battle.
